    Another tidbit I intended to mention and forgot: One of the men killed during one of the attempts to rescue the Lost Battalion was Captain Eddie Grant, 77th Division. Such a curiosity. Much of the video comes from the movie - The Lost Battalion (2001 film). October 1918. World War I is coming to an end. The US 308th Battalion, led by Major Whittlesey, is tasked with taking Argonne Forest "at all costs" to break the German defense there. Two other battalions are also to start the fight: the American and the French, which are to protect the attack on the sides - these, however, are repulsed, and contact with the 308th battalion is severed. In this situation, Major Whittlesey cannot be ordered to withdraw. Convinced of the presence of the other two battalions, the 308th continues its attack on the Germans - and is soon surrounded by them, as reported by the command using their carrier pigeons. The battalion maintains the position it won, with heavy losses it repels enemy attacks. At some point, he is also attacked by his own artillery, which incorrectly determined the location of the battalion.

    Charles Whittlesey is such a tragic historical figure. Despite his celebrity status after the war, he lived his final years just as he had before it: A loner. He never married or had children. At one point he told a friend _"Not a day goes by but I hear from some of my old outfit, usually about some sorrow or misfortune. I cannot bear it much more."_ It's possible Whittlesey blamed himself for leading his men into the deadly siege the Argone Forrest. Perhaps he also felt guilt at refusing to surrender, which led to the deaths of many Americans and Germans in a war that was only weeks away from ending.

      It was the Meuse Argonne offensive by the allies so I would imagine it was the allies doing the pushing

      You're both kinda right. The units on either side were pushed back by counter attacks while the "Lost Battalion" continued pushing forward

      My areas of expertise would be the US Civil War and British Medieval History (specifically the Wars of the Roses), but I'm a student of many other areas as well. After that I'd say WW1, WW2, and the American Revolution are subjects I know the best.

    On the subject of Sabaton: when they shuffled band members some of those who left formed a band called "Civil War" (first album "Killing Angels") with most songs being about American history
    There is probably something there up your alley:

    Let's talk about how they got the rights to use DICE/EA's footage from Battlefield 1... Because i'm pretty sure a evil corp like EA just don't give away things for free... They tend to...
    Come with a enormous fee (scam)

    • @pulvises1268
      @pulvises1268 Před 3 lety +2

      Well, first of all, there's not "they", this video is fan-made, it's not made by Sabaton. Secondly, there is not a fee, video is just demonetized (due to copyrights) which means that the author cannot earn from it. Thirdly, it's not demonetized by EA, they don't care, but by Nuclear Blast due to the "soundtrack" used in the video.

    the only thing really bothering me is as usual with american military movies, is the extensive amount of self-heroisation. the strong hero like soldier holding their ground standing strong. the fact that were talking about world war 1 here should be indication enough to what level of a bloody mess this was. but on the other hand its a movie meant for entertainment so i think its hard to expect documentary level of accuracy from it
