Nice presentation Kelly. I think I may start tying my nymphs utilizing a loop at the thorax instead of a feather folded over before the wing case, or using a Defeo style beard for legs. I like the way you do it, no wax, but I may have to work at that. I asked a professional fly tyer on a blog I follow if he could tell me when dubbed head streamers started, they're all over the place now. He mentioned you and and another tyer from I think Michigan started tying big streamers for trout. (I don't remember that tyers name but I think he's known for the "kracken") I thought of Shane Stalcup with his ice dub fry when that material came out and he tyed an earlier wiggle or wobble type minnow pattern using poly yarn and he mentioned Gary Lafontane in the video as he was a contemporary that had taught him about that materials use. That was quite awhile ago. Also there's Jack Gartside's GSS minnow my favorite variant of the muddler (zoo cougar also) Dalhberg diver. I may be a little older but you've tied much more than I can ever hope too and you've seen the explosion of materials and patterns first hand. So what's you thoughts on when these dubbed streamers started? Thanks Kelly, your channel is filled with useful knowledge. 👍
WOW You are the guy to watch .Only flyfishing for four year not great at it I did catch a big steelhead in in new york in 2016 froze my ass off went March just started this hobby learning a lot from you THANKS PAL GREAT JOB
I tie bass and coastal flats (big-ish) flies. I haven't been pleased with some of the newer "dubbing brushes" available. Yeah, they're quicker, but they don't look as good (to me) as with a conventional dubbing loop. The fish probably don't give a whit either way. 🙂
Kelly I would love to see this again more from the Behind you or above you angle It is really hard to see what you are really doing from straight on,with my I pad Also which hook are you using and how tight are tying off the finish of the head? Wrapping to a taper or dab of glue to tight finish?.. Then how are you fishing it? Jerk and drag? Let it float down stream then swing wide in as it gets to end of float? Let me know if you have other tying videos that are set up with more of the view from above or behind you. I love the look of the finished fly. I just want details on how to use it. Is it fished on WF line or use as a dropper to a float fly tied on?. I would love to head out for a week to have you teach me fly fishing and tying better. It would be my dream job to tech other women basic fishing and tying back here on the Betsie river I have just retired for medical reasons and feel I have a calling to share my love for fly fishing. You have built yourself quite a reputation in the world of fly fishing , guiding and ,tying. You are World renowned!! That is so cool Kelly 🎣 I know we hardly knew each other in high school and you don't owe me anything but I would love to come out there some time and learn whatever I can from the master to get me to the next level in tying and fishing What would it cost me to have a week with you to be an apprentice so I could take away a craft I could use to expand my dream of donating time to help depressed, divorced, ex military, cancer fighting women the basics of fly fishing and tying up here in TVC?? I work with most of these women for free. They just must promise to pay it forward so others can enjoy the sport There are some really lost women/young girls that have asked me to take them out for a day on the river to get them outside in the fresh air where they can let their problems go away for a while. They want to Be taken away from their life for a while (an escape) they are hurting or are afraid and need to experience the solitude and beauty that you can only get from an afternoon standing in a river fly fishing. Kelly, do you make or use dubbing brushes? Not the velcro / comb type but the dubbing brush material type. IE: EP Sparkle brush etc. By the way, glad I'm not the only one using the Clic glasses. They are a must. Chuck in Tulsa.
+Chuck Bingham I do not, I don't get the control with the brushes I do by doing them as I go. I I were doing much bigger flies where the tapers were not quit so important I would but only if I were doing production stuff or Musky size flies. KG
It sounded like there might have been a lot of good information in this video. I wish the camera would have been closer to the action. I would have liked to have seen the actual loop being made. It’s something of a mystery to me & my tying mentor has passed.
what vice is that? i think it's time to upgrade from the one i bought a million years ago when i first started tying. that thing is slick and i want one....lol

Terrible. No close ups of how to start a dubbing loop. Camera is too far away to see exactly what Kelly is doing. Also start simply. A hare's ear is not a simply tie. Since Kelly mentions that he uses dubbing loops for streamers then start there with something larger.
Hey Phil....Yup, we should probably do a re-shoot on this video as it was done eight years ago. Check out the Hare's Ear video we did in April of 2020 and I think you will see the video and camera angle quality increase dramatically.
