  • More from the film archives of the late Red Moser. This time we look at the then-remaining operating examples of Pennsylvania Railroad steam power. First, a look at the brief career of restored K4 1361 after its "rescue" from display at Horseshoe Curve. Next, doubleheaded steam with the 7002 and 1223 on a trip to Rockville Bridge from Strasburg in 1985. Finally, the Strasburg ran some trips with the 1223 and vintage PRR stock in 1982 recreating the "Pennsylvania Special" of 1902 on its 80th birthday.

    I swear the more footage of the 7002 & 1223 excursions that continues to surface the more I'm secretly crying that they are no longer under steam because all of this footage is still A+++ and deserves to be seen. My God that shot at 4:17 of the train at express speed is beyond powerful, it's majestic.

      PRR 1361 is being restored to operating condition and tour the mid-Atlantic region to different railroads with a PRR passenger consist including B60 baggage cars (to be used as exhibit cars, a PRR RPO as a gift shop car, P70 coaches, and possibly a diner and lounge observation car from the Broadway Limited.

    As a fan of old-time railroading, I really liked the footage of the Atlantic and American! The footage of them at speed should take us back to the Good Old Days and the 4-car run with the 4-4-0 at the end should show the younger fans why passenger cars were known as "Varnish" back when equipment was kept in showroom condition. In other words: _Great footage!_ Thanks.

If my brother was chairman, it might have been. leased back to Strasburg. It ran for 50 years on Pennsylvania and about the same at Strasburg, so I do not see how there is any original material left for the museum to protect, but that is the reason why neither loco is in operation.

    7:07 why is that combine car so bowed?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 3 lety +1

      Wood frame cars tended to sag over time. The truss rods at the bottom of the car were designed to be tightened periodically to combat this. The car sat for many years with no maintenance, hence the sag. By the time the car was restored, it was determined that correcting the sag would potentially damage the frame, so it was left that way.

    It would be more financially feasible to restore 1223 and 7002 to full operation than it would be to rebuild an engine from the ground up. 1223 firebox sheet would require a new boiler but both engines were fully operational and taken care off by the time of their "retirement" in the early 1990's Obviously this woild be incumbent on the engines owners.
