    This is meant for rehabilitation and therapy of injured horses or as an alternative training method. Not dissimilar to pool therapy for humans. This is not cruel, the horses are not confused. The chestnut is obviously a first timer and tries to turn around but is corrected by the back gate being in his way and turns around. This is all very gentle and easy. Water reduces stress on the joints and provides resistance to forward momentum, helping to rebuild strength. I don't know whether this pool is heated or not, but I would imagine it would be best to have some kind of temperature gauge to prevent the water becoming too hot or cold. Cold is not necessarily bad, horses can generate a lot of heat over their bodies as they exercise and cooler water would help prevent overheating, but body heat is lost to water faster than to air, so too cold would not be good. I imagine that some type of thermostat to keep the water around fifty degrees Fahrenheit would be optimal. Heat and cold both have their places in therapy. It all depends on the type of injury and what stage of healing they are in.

      aj gensel I really hope they eventually turn the horse around and work in the other direction! And also, I'm just going by racehorses, but don't they usually swim instead of just walking through water?

      You make a valid point, I'm not sure if this model can be reversed so that horses don't develop muscle mass unevenly. It would be one of my questions to the manufacturer before I installed one. It probably wouldn't be that big a problem, given the low speeds and width of the walking pattern. Still it is probably why the true treadmill style aqua walkers are more popular since a straight treadmill reduces the chance of lop sided muscle gain. During rehabilitation, if possible, a combination of swimming and this can be best. Swimming offers no stress to the joint while building muscle mass but is extremely tiring for horses and requires multiple handlers to ensure safety since the pool must be deep by necessity. An aquatic treadmill, be it the type shown above or a true treadmill, offers a low impact, thus low stress on joints while creating resistance that builds muscle faster than normal exercise on land. It also requires a single operator, once the horse is accustomed to it, rather than many, since the horses can contact the bottom of the pool so there a very minimal risk of drowning. Space and money considerations are the main factors in whether a rehab center has one or both types. A pool for swimming requires a lot of room, and costs well in excess of your average backyard pool. Aquatic treadmills take up much less space but require more maintenance due to all their moving parts. Both types require water heaters, powerful filters and specific chemicals for keeping the water clean.

    We have two big ice machines and lower the water to just above the knees then let the ice water keep the tendons nice and strong.
    The horses look forward to their water time.
    Hopefully by next year we will be installing a second deeper pool to swim the Athletes.
    Funny, you never hear these idiots say “that Labrador shouldn’t be forced to fetch that ball” well I had a lab break a leg chasing a ball. PETA never came to check on my dog.
    I spent a great deal of money to get my horses to the track and home safe and sound. It’s what they LOVE to do. Just like the lab that chases a ball, and by the way, she is now old fat and happy but still loves her ball.

Mine would probably just have bolted off on one of the sides (when I'd be standing at the end) or towards the end (if I'd be on the side) jolly as ever and have me run half a marathon to get to him. -lol- Does this also come in shetland?

      +Samtpfote what? Build a lake? Are you kidding me? Or build one of these? These are professionally made, if you attempt it yourself, it's would be a lot of hard work and stress, you could also really screw it up and make unsafe. Why are you so against this? Many horses love it and hydrotherapy can be brilliant for sport horses, or those recovering from an injury

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 Před 7 lety

      Red rider, a new lake was re-built built on Purdown, near Bristol. [the original one was filled in to make a nasty motorway.It took many months, cost many hundreds of thousands of pounds..we used to 'play' in the excavated pit that became the lake, huge fossil ammonites were in the footings of the lake, too huge to move..the lake is now well established, and not really suitable for horses, as it has a fence all around it..
      A favourite racehorse of the old landowners is buried in the woods there, from 1700's and the Duchess fell from her horse and died during a thunderstorm..she was commemorated by an obelisk.. To suggest that the average person should 'build a lake' is insane...you need land that is spring fed too. :)

      you are right they wouldn't be swimming. its a resistance muscle training. you have tried to walk in a pool yeh? it's much harder and it's the same idea. also they will spend much less time in here at any one time than they would in an ordinary walker, in case you were worried about them getting tired out. Ive seen ones with a variable water level so you can increase or decrease the resistance. :)

    • @traciehilliard5375
      @traciehilliard5375 Před 10 lety +6

      Their pace slows because the water provides more resistance. It's the same thing as a human entering a pool. You have to exert more energy to walk the same speed in water as you would outside of it. It's great exercise and wonderful rehabilitation for injuries because it is low impact on joints. Also horses are less sensitive to temperature changes than humans are. Pus there's nothing wrong with cool water on a hot day. I highly doubt they would put horses in there if the water weren't heated and it were 20* outside...

    • @canofworms8029
      @canofworms8029 Před 8 lety

      Have you ever tried to walk or run on water? You'd find it difficult to wade through the water, it's resistance would slow you down and you have to pole through it. That's why their pace slows down,
