I live in California and have ridden a Honda Goldwing for many years now. One thing I would like to say (and a lot of goldwing owners do not know this) is that you can reset your ECU control module, and when you had the new injector fitted the goldwing was looking for the old one so it had to be reset to "see" the new one. I reset my goldwing every so often and here is how you do it. In the morning when the bike is cold, put the key in and start the engine, BUT, do not touch the throttle, just start it and let it idle, now it takes about 5 mins so stay and listen to the engine and as soon as the cooling fan for the engine cuts in. turn of the ignition and that's it. you can now start and ride. I moved house when I retired about 4 years ago and where I did live was about 300 ft above sea level, where I moved to was at 2400 ft. I reset the ECU and all was great. I am Scottish by the way. moved to California in 1981. but used to be a trucker over there and drove many of the roads you show on your video, keep up the good work.

£1800 was indeed a reasonable price, it cost me that to have new clutch and flywheel fitted to my car last year. As with any secondhand vehicle you always have to consider why the previous owner decided to move it on. There is always a risk that you may be buying an ongoing fault. My tip for you is learn how the plastics come off and go back on again because any regular maintenance like checking the air cleaner or sparkplugs will involve whipping the plastics off. In an ideal world when you turn off the ignition switch then everything electrical switches off too, but any automotive electrician will remind you about the alarm system, parking lights, immobilizer and no doubt certain aspects of the ecu. It may be worth checking the electrical connections for corrosion or signs of water ingress. Your bike is only new to you, its been used and sadly also abused by its previous keepers. Just give it a good check over and make sure that you have recovery. But enjoy the ride as it sounds like improvements have already been made.

I had a GL 1800 Goldwing. After decades behind bars I felt that I deserve to have the best. I bought a used gl1800 with only 13,000 miles on it. It still has the original tires on it. No maintenance was ever done. I believe the machine was on the Side stand it’s whole life because the suspension felt limp..
being an exmotorcycle mechanic at several shops. I ordered tires, aftermarket fork springs, and matching spring rate shock spring. Fork seals bushings wipers, oil, air filter, oil filter, final drive oil.. I added heated grips, I bought a new OEM windshield with a vent. And I started working on the machine doing all the maintenance that it never had. The clutch fluid looked like a melted chocolate milkshake when it came out..I’m surprised the seal did not fail on the slave cylinder. I changed the brake fluid. I removed a lot of the trinkets the goldwing owners ofren adorn their motorcycles with pretty often and sold those things on eBay. I don’t go in for add on chrome or stickers or Christmas tree lights or loud exhaust. I learned decades ago that the factory knows best.. One of the accessories I removed were the aftermarket floorboards. They were in the way. And in the owners manual, Honda specifically says do not install floorboards..(leads to transmission problems?)
while working on the machine, the degree of difficulty in accessing different things like just changing the air cleaner, and, just changing the spring on the rear shock made me realize that, many of these components if not just about every maintenance item is pretty much buried under plastic.. I have always done my own maintenance, and over the decades, I’ve done my own engine rebuilding on my road race machines, on which I won six championships and was national champion two times in my class. I can do pretty much anything except rebuild triple crankshafts on two strokes, and I do not have a boring bar for boring cylinders.. but everything else is pretty much just take everything apart and keep track of all the little fasteners and nuts and bolts, and I can usually get things back together till now anyway..
i’ve done all the maintenance on mine and my families dirt bikes and quads and trials bikes, and all my street bikes and sport bikes and touring bikes and quads and commuters and dual sport machines, 108 in all so far.. it’s an obsession. I am a motorcycle junkie.. although I have never had a Harley, don’t want one either, and I’ve never had a British bike, yet.. Moto Guzzi’s, beta, gas gas, FANTIC, one bmw ( k1200lt ) my first and last BMW, never again will I go out on that limb.. all the rest have been Japanese.. Honda Yamaha Kawasaki Suzuki Bridgestone.
of all of those motorcycles that I have always done intense maintenance on it. My Goldwing was absolutely the most time-consuming difficult motorcycle to work on. Motorcycles and cars and trucks and just about any mechanical thing, they don’t wear out, they are neglected to death..
The troubles you were having with this machine I experienced with my Yamaha FJ 1200. Intermittent no start and intermittent wild cycling of my dashboard gauges.. that turned out to be a dirty side stand switch not making good contact when closed.. it was a bit grimy and gritty from road grime sticking to the lube I would spray on my side stand.. that has also been an issue on the clutch safety switch for starting your motorcycle when you stall it in gear. You simply pull the clutch in and it will engage the starter. I have found those to be troublesome especially on motorcycles that people use pressure washers on. All that water being forced into the switches under pressure carrying the dirt with them into the wire harness into the cables into the switch..
I am a retired electrician/HVAC technician. Most problems with air conditioners, furnaces, electric heaters, ice machines, refrigerators, most problems are electrical, more than 90% of the time..
Number two fuel injector on your Goldwing went bad? I am actually not surprised by that ..Here in the United States, the fuel that is blended for the general public is 10% ethanol mixed with gasoline. i’m not convinced that is a good or a bad thing yet although I do know you lose some gas mileage and ethanol absorbs water right out of the air because it is alcohol based.. but when I changed everything I could think of on my Goldwing when I first got it maintenance wise filters, oils, tires, I could not find a fuel filter available anywhere. I went through my 2 inch thick Honda service department manual, there was no mention of a fuel filter anywhere. It turns out to my surprise, and I mean a big surprise, that my Goldwing did not have a fuel filter.. I used to think fuel injectors were pretty simple, and carburetors were complex. Nothing could be further from the truth, it is fuel injectors that are complex internally, and carburetors are as simple as your toilet basically.. One other little thing about fuel injected motorcycles.I mention this on my website/videos on CZcams. If you have a dead battery on a fuel injected motorcycle. You ain’t gonna be able to bump start that bike. You’re gonna have to carry jumper cables because your ECU and fuel pump need 12 V to operate..
The only problem I ever had with my Goldwing was the four-way flashers turned on and I could not get them to turn off.. it turns out to be a very very common problem with the GL 1800. So common that there were people selling used four-way flasher modules for hundreds of dollars on eBay..
so when I got my Goldwing maintenance schedule completely done from steering head bearings to fork oil to final drive oil to air cleaner change to rear shock spring change(which was more difficult to do than changing the air cleaner, which means you have to remove the dashboard bezel parts of the interfering the engine cover the side covers the seat the battery voltage regulator the fuel tank just to get at the top bolt on the rear shock)
after seeing how long it takes to do basic maintenance chores on the Goldwing, when I got it completed on my maintenance schedule. I sold it..
I sold it because the thought of maybe having to do something serious like replace the clutch made me grit my teeth just thinking about it..
I sold the gold wing and I bought myself a 2008 Yamaha royal star venture. My third venture since 1986. You can access the starter, the alternator, the slave cylinder, the water pump, and the clutch without removing a single piece of plastic on the ventures. To change the air cleaners is a 20 minute job because there’s two of them one on each side in front of your knees. ventures have what turns out to be simple carburetors it will always get you home and you can bump start a bike with carburetors when the battery goes flat..
The Goldwing was a much smoother bike, it was too powerful and I mean that I mentioned that in one of my videos comparing ownership of both machines on CZcams. Gold wings are perfect, but that 1800 CC motor is thirsty. It’s unnecessarily overpowered. I get around 45 to 48 mpg on my venture, my goldwing got 33 mpg..
The Goldwing is the standard for smooth. Once I got rid of the floorboards and put on the standard foot pegs and shifter, it shifted like butter, I did rebuild the suspension on the Goldwing and the suspension was tight, the brakes were better than on my venture, the cruise control was perfect on my Goldwing. My Venture Cruise control drifts A few mph.. The Goldwing handles better than my Venture, but I’m not out here backing it around corners. I want Plush roomy simple. That’s why I went back to the Venture. The Goldwing scared me away with its complexity. You have to marry the dealer with many of today’s cars trucks and motorcycles now. That’s why I went backwards slightly to the Venture. Much roomier, and they last just as long. I’ve had three ventures since 1986. But if I had not tried the BMW and the gold wing, I would not have appreciated the Venture as much as I do now for its simplicity and roominess and ride..
Don’t get me wrong, gold wings are perfect, if you fit them..but a little too complex for me

Kudos to the dealership for taking care of you honestly and professionally. Thanks for sharing.

I was talking yesterday to the tech who fixed our bike last year and he said he'll never forget us or our bike because of the rarity of the injector problem. He has been a bike mechanic for a total of 50 years and a Honda dealership mechanic for the last 30 and he reiterated that he'd never before seen an injector fail on a Honda. Not that there would have been injectors on Honda 50 years ago....

At first I suspected the fuel, but resurched internet which pointed me to the pu;se igniters. This was a 86 year, so the whole thing was simpler than yours. @fbglife  Před rokem

I had a rectifier fail on my Versys and at the time I was pretty upset by the cost of buying a replacement but it pales into insignificance next to this expense.
Honda weren't able to replicate the fault on this bike and it's really only a best guess that the battery 'dumping' problem was caused was by the fuel injector - possibly by the solenoid sometimes sticking open or half open and causing a massive and instant draw on the battery. We've had no problems since the repair so fingers crossed that, like you say, we won't have the problem again.

  • @gwrider2146
    @gwrider2146 Před rokem +1

I'd not recommend charging the battery while it's still connected to the bike's electrical system, as I feel it "can" cause issues with the bike's most sensitive electrical parts should the charger ever up the voltage too high on the battery for some unforeseen reason while its connected to the bike. I always disconnect the battery's negative cable before connecting a battery tender to it and even then I only charge it for 12 hours or so at the longest, and then just leave things disconnected from the battery and then reconnect the negative battery cable to the bike whenever I want to go on a ride. This has worked out well for me for battery longevity and I also have avoided electrical issues over the decades I've ridden on various brands of bikes and atvs. I also do this for tractors and vehicles that sit alot. I currently have had my '06 Goldwing navigation airbag model for over 8 years now with no electrical issues other than changing the battery out the one time just to be on the safe side since that trip was going to be over 5000 miles in cold high altitude areas up in parts of Oregon and Washington state (I rode in some wet snow!) and then in lower altitude 99 deg. F hot climates in the desert southwestern USA.

Since no machine is 100% reliable and trouble free, that means some number of bikes have to have problems(otherwise, they would be 100% reliable). Gobs of wiring and connections, switches and buttons only add to the possibilities. ,Unfortunately, your bike is one of them. Glad it was able to be diagnosed, and put back on the road. These bikes, and modern bikes in general are almost unbelievably dependable and are stone axe reliable, even as their complexity only continues to increase...Now it's time to wear out some tires...and get good at removing/replacing the plastic....

The modern Japanese motorcycles are so ridiculously expensive to fix because of all of the crap that they have on them now. With my 1965 Triumph TR6 I just have a headlight and a tail light. It has a Magneto ignition so I can lose all the electrics and the bike still runs. All the bikes was complicated systems on them are ridiculously expensive to fix to fix a BMW's ABS braking system cost $2,400. Most people just bypass it to save the cost and go back to regular breaks.

I don't know what year your motorcycle is but gold wings have a belt driving the camshaft in the front of the engine if the belt is dry from age it can snap and the Pistons will kiss the valves and destroy the engine. Depending on the age of your bike I would recommend changing the belt Just For Peace of Mind.

Best thing I ever did to my 06 GL1800 was to SELL IT a month ago. It was fun for a couple of years then I rode (and bought) a 2017 BMW R1200RT and the light switched on for me. THIS is what a touring motorcycle should be. Fast, agile, GREAT wind protection (Goldwing is horrible, honestly...helmet buffeting), brakes are superb, power to weight ratio far superior on just two cylinders...simply another level of motorcycling. Sorry to be debbie downer on the 'wing, but it's just too heavy and all that power is lost getting that weight moving and into a terribly designed transmission. First gear is worthless and only five gears? C'mon, Honda...get with it. The best things for the early GL1800's to improve them somewhat is the Traxxion dynamics front end and a Henry's final drive gear. It makes first gear usable and drops rpm's on the highway. The wing just wore me out in commuting use, whereas the BMW is inspiring and FUN....could ride all day and enjoy every second of it. Just my views on it. Best of luck to all Wing riders and stay safe out there.
