On the hottest day of the year so far we put on our heavy riding clothing and set off on the 2-hour journey from our home in Nottinghamshire to the Lincolnshire seaside town of Skegness. We had a reason to visit a location nearby (coming soon in another video!) and we thought it would make a nice weekend break to stay in Skeggy for a couple of nights. #goldwing1800 #hondagoldwing #motorcycle

We recently rode out into the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District once again to meet our fellow Goldwingers Jane & Phil. They have recently bought a pair of Sena intercoms and we met up to try out bike-to-bike communications and groupo chat. things didn't go quite as we planned but it was nevertheless a great day out. #goldwing1800 #hondagoldwing #motorcycle

      Thank you so very much for your lovely comments and for your subscription! The tech side of this motovlogging game is still a work-in-progress and it's taken a while to get the audio to where it is now - although I still think there are some small improvements I can make with it. But thank you for commenting on the current audio, it's encouraging to hear that. The second element of this Skeggy weekend trip (our day out on the second day) is currently being edited and I'll hopefully have it ready to upload very soon... J&S

    Long time since I have been down there, I used to go to Scarbrough, Filey and Bridlington alot, would take the kids to Haven Primrose Valley holiday park often. I remember many years ago I went to a show farm called Lightwater Valley, years later it turned into a fun park, I took our Youth Club there once back in the early 2000's , that was when I drove for First Bus. That was nice to see around Skeggy again, brought back some memories.. I like the camera setup, I have only got the one Go Pro but planning on another. I bought the DJI wireless mic's too which seems to work well even inside the helmet, saves the wiring. The Goldwing seems to be going well, no more hiccups? I think it is probably the best bike in the world to ride. A mate of mine who is a Harley guy took a shot of the Goldwing, after it he actually admitted he preferred that to his Harley, I think the Harley is just a show piece, no one can honestly say they are nice comfy bikes, but hey thats my opinion. Good to see you guys on the road, keep up the miles,,, Dan

    Must admit I went to the Sena S50 which has mesh, you can connect multiple on the same mesh bandwidth. We go out with a dozen or more and all on the one mesh channel although I often pop off onto pair with my wife for privacy. Glad you got it all going though.

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife Před 4 dny

      You obviously have more friends than we do Dan :) Our first intercoms were Cardo Scala Q2 many years ago. They worked 'fine' for what they were at the time but when we bought the Goldwing we knew we had to upgrade (better late than never eh) - and we bought a pair of Cardo Spirits because all we wanted was a simple rider-to-pillion arrangement with no fripperies. Those headsets worked well sitting on the sofa but out on the bike they were hopeless. Cardo's customer support could not have been less interested. I returned them and spent a few more pennies to get these Sena 20s. They work perfectly for what we need and are very reliable. I was reluctant to buy units with features we wouldn't use but if extra cost meant we'd have reliable communications I was happy to pay it. These Sena Bluetooth units (Blueteeth?) are, for the time being at least, good enough for our limited needs. I am intrigued by mesh technology but even if I had a dozen friends I wouldn't know what to say to them :) If you've got more to say about real world use of mesh in large groups it could make for a good video topic Dan. Hint hint.... I'd certainly watch it!

      Hi Mike, We're using Sena 20s evo. Intercoms are a subjective matter and I can't offer you a definitive answer to which is best but having tried the Cardo Sprit headsets and not getting on with them at all, we are very happy with these Sena 20s ones. They pair reliably with each other, our phones, other rider's intercoms and our satnav, they have good battery life and give clear and easy communications between the 2 of us. Our friends in this video have recently bought Sena SF4 units and they are happy with them. I'm currently editing a video in which we speak a little more about these headsets. Which Goldwing are you getting? We have 2 sets of friends who are struggling to get their Bluetooth headsets to pair with the 2018+ Goldwing.

    My wife loves to ride pillion but has absolutely zero interest in riding herself. I've tried, but I know now to not push it and just be grateful that she's happy to at least ride pillion. When we first met she hated bikes (she works in life assurance dealing with death claims), so it's a minor miracle that I've even managed to get her on the back of one! I have a friend who recently tried his CBT. It was bought for him by his partner as he'd always wanted to give it a try as he'd never ridden a motorcycle before. But he just couldn't get on with riding a motorcycle, said there was too much going on all at once and he just didn't feel confident or comfortable at all. And he has a pilot's licence and flies regularly! I said a very similar thing to both of them - give it a try, but if you don't like it and don't WANT to persevere to try and gain some confidence, then riding a bike is not for you. Learning aside (we all have to start somewhere), a motorbike is not the place to be if you're feeling nervous or anxious.

      It would have been nice to know what I could have done with an understanding instructor. I have a bus license as well as my car license so I'm not adverse to learning new vehicles. I think most who try to do it all too quickly often fail through nerves. You out really should do a couple of years riding untill you gain so much confidence you could ride without thinking about it. But if you try to do it all too quickly you won't have that confidence. Maybe getting another bike and spending that time riding for a 2 year period would get you through your test, but then look at pros and cons, such as do you really need to? Look at the expense? My wife has been riding since we first got married, her first bike was a Suzuki 50, then a Yamaha DT LC 125, this was back in 1982 onwards. Just recently she sold her Yamaha Bolt 950 as she hasn't used it in about 5 years as she has become too nervous. I think as you get older it does get harder to keep your confidence riding, knowing whether to ride or not is something only you will know.. Cheets

    As I was so scared witless as a pillion I took my bike test before I ever drove a car. As I recall the CBT was just being introduced but I just squeaked in before that. I spent many happy years pootling around on various bikes before I took my car test. They were just introducing the theory tests then and I just squeaked in with my car licence before having to do that too. My last bike was a ZZR600, I enjoyed the biking and the community around it but left it all really and gradually became a softy car driver. I do miss it sometimes when the sun's shining but the state of the roads makes me think maybe not...

I eventually took my own test and drove around on my own ER 500 for a couple of years but I really preferred being a pillion, never as confident and comfortable as he was. Second hubby is more a car man and I haven’t ridden for years. Daughter and her partner are big bike people and she does track days on some huge bikes. That was a nice tour and history lesson. Can't believe how green everything is in the UK, over here everything is a bit dry and a little colder as the start of June is the beginning of our winter, not that it gets really cold. I was listening to you mention the fuel and additives, in the UK most fuel is refined at the same refinery, so no matter what brand you get it is really all the same. Years back when I worked in Scotland I used to work for First Bus South East Scotland. I did a review on fuels that we used and also on whether Bio Diesel was worth swapping to. I contacted Scannie, Volvo and Denis on the use of Bio fuels in their engines. To cut a long story short I ended up having our area switch to Bio Diesel for a year to test it. The results were really good that First Bus UK made the switch too.. I got no recognition for it, but everyone knew it was me..that's my wee claim to fame. Anyhoo, another good video, catch up with you guys again in the next one.

    I use E0 fuel all the time here in France even though some of my bikes will run on E10. The reason being that E0 petrol has a higher calorific value than E10 which results in higher MPG. In the UK Esso is still available ethanol free in certain areas, even though by law like France it must be marked up as E5.

      Thanks Roger. That's another vote for putting E10 in our bike. I feel a lot more confident about doing that now. The looks of the 2018+ Goldwing have really grown on me - especially having spent many miles one weekend following our friends on their lovely blue DCT.

    I use E5 in my older 90's bikes (one is carbs) and E10 in the newer ones. I don't why people say supermarket E10 is bad. Tesco, for example, always used to be supplied fuel by esso. Supermarket fuel will come out of a major brands refinery. Why would they bother producing a lower quality fuel for supermarkets?

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife Před 2 měsíci

      Hello Trevor, thanks for your comment. Maria at Honda suggested the supermarket fuel doesn't have the additives and/or detergents that branded fuel does - sorry, I forget to mention that in my video commentary. I've just done a quick search and the articles I've seen seem to concur. It appears the basic fuel is the same but branded petrol has more stuff put into it. www.fuelcardservices.com/why-is-supermarket-fuel-cheaper-than-branded-petrol/ www.rightfuelcard.co.uk/news/supermarket-fuel-vs-branded-which-is-best-for-my-fleet I haven't the faintest idea what this means to 'real world' motoring as opposed to theoretical and hypothetical situations but it's good to hear so many people are happy putting E10 in their bikes. Thanks.

      @fbglife thanks for the links, I'm still not convinced. The price difference now is not that great anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same stuff. Major brands will need a reason to justify a slightly higher price. I certainly won't be put off using supermarket fuel, there doesn't seem to be anything solid in those articles to say otherwise. Each to their own. 🙂

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife Před 2 měsíci

      That's fair enough. It seems there's not a lot of transparency around what's in those fuels (understandable to a degree I suppose) and it leaves us all to make up our own minds. Like you say, each to their own.

    pleased to see you back on the Bike Johnathan. Looking forward to your videos. Ref the E10 just about every bike has no issue with the fuel. There was a list on the Government site at the change over, but like all Gov sites there were vehicles on it that were classed as not suitable , when manufactures were clearly stating the engines were ok up to E15, of course there were the ones listed as ok when they were not ok. My V900 was ok with E10 as is my new bike 21 Plate Goldwing tour.

    Hubby says they seem to have cured the issues with newer vehicles but E10 in older, classic or vehicles that sit for long periods, even lawnmowers, would benefit from fuel draining or putting in an additive. We do with all ours that sit for overwintering.

    Your bike will be fine on E10 mate, the only issue that it really causes are that the ethanol attacks things like unsuitable o rings and rubber pipes, also it absorbs more water than E5 but as long as its in a relatively sealed system you will be fine.

    In your area, are you able to find pure gas or ethanol free gas? In Texas you can find it scattered around. We also have this certification at select gas stations called top tier gas and they are tested often. Another option is to get your gas at new brand name station. In my area the most common gas has 10 percent ethanol in all three grades. The grades I’m talking about are regular mid grade and super.

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife Před 2 měsíci

      I'm not aware of any ethanol-free petrol being available anywhere, other than maybe specialist motorsport type sellers. We typically have 3 choices of fuel at UK stations: E10, E5 & diesel. When I was a boy we had 2 star, 3 star, 4 star and even 5 star petrol. Those were the days :)

  • @biker_dan
    @biker_dan Před 2 měsíci

    I think the only difference if any between E10 and E5 would be seen on a dyno if you were measuring it on performance. But to be honest the lines of 99 percent of riders wouldn't notice any difference . The only problem ethanol can cause is a speed up of deterioration on plastic and rubber parts on the fuel system, but that's about it really. I think in the UK as well as here in Australia it has been tested and found that as long as you keep to a max of 10 percent ethanol it won't do any damage to your vehicle. Manufacturers spend millions testing engines with a variety of fuels, so if Honda recommends the E10 then it won't do any harm. Don't believe the hype people spread about how bad E10 is, it is all nonsense and people pass the info on without knowing the truth.

    • @fbglife
      @fbglife Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks Dan, that's well-reasoned opinion. It seems most riders are happy with E10 and that, yes, I have believed the hype! Not any more though!

      @@garydunn3037 That's a shame about not being able to ride. Those of us with healthy eyes tend to take them for granted. I was once of the mind that the Goldwing is too big for UK roads but I simply don't hold to that view any longer. They ARE heavy but that doesn't mean they're not ridable (and enjoyable) on small twisty roads. In fact it seems to me that the high mass of the Goldwing may make it more stable and predictable through the bends. If anything I'd say the Goldwing's chassis is wasted on wide straight roads.

From what I have read, they have a low centre of gravity, with the motor being slung low down, even the petrol tank is under the seat. So, I can understand their feeling of ease to handle.
