Time to hit the high seas with Link! No not Zelda Wind Waker, but the sequel The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. A game that has some issues with fans because how "casual" it can be. Because you do pretty much everything, eeeeeverything with the stylus. You don't even use the D-pad to move Link around. There's a lot of exploration, but will this chillness of the game affect my completionist attitude for this game? Let's find out!
Let me know what you thought about my Zelda Phantom Hourglass review!

Who's your favorite CZcamsr to watch when you just want to chill out, man?
Chuggaaconroy
PBG
Somecallmejohnny, Scott The Woz, Projared, Nostalgia Critic, The Completionist
LobosJR. He's funny, and when I want to watch something while I play a game/do something else, it's easy to watch his stream archives and do that thing.

The most cursed puzzle in any Zelda game was having to close your DS to print the map,I solved that shit by getting mad and throwing by DS, when I picked it up I opened and it was solved
Lol,i spent 7 hours with the system open, then i closed it out of frustration and when i opened it again i was shocked that it was the solution
I remember being so pissed off that I slammed my ds shut and sarcastically said maybe this will work and then I opened it...bruh
But... The hint is quite obvious. The southwestern sea chart is upside down and you are told to press them together. It's not that hard to understand to close the DS.
Great idea
Terrible ass implementation
I literally spent 15 minutes :/
I had the same problem and I stoped playing the game. Few days later a friend asked if he could borrow the game since he was a big fan of Zelda himself. I let him take the game for a week or two thinking he was never going to make it through the part where I was stuck (print the map). Few days later at school he tells me he already passed me and that I needed to close the DS... I instantly asked him to give me back the game so I could continue!
"Phantom Hourglass is unlike any other Zelda game."
I guess we're not gonna talk about Spirit Tracks.
What about Zelda's Adventure for the CDI? When he play it???!!!!
@@chippypills i wouldn't wish that game on my worst enemy
@@jslaughter95 is it bad that i love that game
Damn Wiener I mean you do you man lol
NO WE'RE NOT
Phantom hourglass was my first Zelda game, and I fell in love with the franchise because of it. I love the music, the characters, the puzzles, and even the temple of the ocean king. I really hope it gets an hd remaster in the future because the ds graphics don't do the game justice.
This comment is 4 years old but I really don't think an hd remaster makes any sense at all for ph (or st for that matter)
They just made too much use of the ds mechanics. I can't see it being played anywhere else at all
@@nebula8893 The same thing was said about Skyward Sword
@@darkmonger6244 yeah but skyward sword is not nearly as extreme of an example. And also, I know it doesn't really count for much but I never said that about skyward sword, I was one of the people asking for a remake and glad when it happened
@@nebula8893I mean , you are right but wrong , we don't need a remaster we need a new 3DS witch has a new remasterd , and if that happens I will be satasfied
This was my first Zelda game too! Orcarina of time on GameCube couldn’t do what this game could on those long 4 hour drives as a kid this was gold
Man, this is so chill I almost wanna just put it on loop while I play Dragon Quest Builders. Man oh man.

Linebeck's theme was so memorable that it's still a song I whistle like every day, even 13 years later. Dunno why it stuck with me so hard
Linebeck is the best Zelda character ever.
Your not wrong

I actually can relate to Linebeck more than any other Zelda character. Kinda shocking eh?
@@heatherbladefemboy989 you're right
His theme is awesome
Phantom Hourglass was my first Zelda game to play, and it's arguably my favorite for several different reasons. Thanks for covering it!
Same. I got this game for Christmas and I played it to death. Though some puzzles left me stumped for months. (Ice Temple's grapple hook arrow rikoshe trick)
Same, it’s my favorite Zelda game and I think it’s primarily because it was the first video game I’ve ever played. I love when creators actually mention it and Spirit Tracks because they’re so underappreciated
@@323starlight I know this comment is almost a year old but... same! That was exactley the puzzle that I remembered while watching the video. I was stuck at that puzzle for a while and I think I even solved it accidentally not sure. But when I solved it, I thought: "How would anybody else come up with the solution" lol Still pretty memorable.
I had got the golden Zelda DS this game came with it it had the tri force symbol on it, I think thats what made it my fav
Out of everyone I've ever heard talk about this game, even it's biggest fans, Jirard is the only person I've ever heard say they genuinely ENJOYED the Temple of the Ocean King. I've heard other people praise some of the ideas, puzzles, and mechanics in it, but never before have I heard somebody say they actually liked how it was handled overall.
Its really not a bad idea in concept- kind of metroidvania-esque. Spirit tracks basically took the idea and made it 10x better though.
@@Insanonaga I disagree. Spirit Tracks fixed the temple TOO much, getting rid of what made it great. The whole idea of taking notes of possible future shortcuts is gone for occasional items you can get going through older areas, the stealth mechanic, while still present, isn't as memorable since the brighter atmosphere combined with the lack of a time limit really removed the presence that Phantoms had in TOTOK, and while the cooperation with Zelda is neat, it's nothing exactly ground breaking considering that Zelda had that before, including Phantom Hourglass.
@@Insanonaga its an aweful idea in concept. its the type of back tracking that isn't fun. going to the same place over and over again isn't fun. just cause it has more rooms every time does not make it a good. it was a huge damper on what is already just an ok zelda game
PlayPod It has a definite chance to be something better than that though. Sprinkle in some side upgrades for return trips (like heart pieces, capacity upgrades, etc.) and add more checkpoints than just the one midway, and this is solid for a retry.
nickssaa I have to agree, in some regards. I think if they made extra checkpoints in the original, it would have alleviated a majority of the issues people had (for instance, every blue portal the game throws at you once you get the sea chart turning into a yellow one like the midway point.)
This is the first positive review I've ever watched for Phantom Hourglass, especially one that also praised the Temple of the Ocean King.
Also, Islands isn't exactly a widespread chain restaurant. I live in Maryland and my nearest Islands joint is in Arizona.
Yeah same nobody ever talks about the merits of Phantom Hourglass. I wonder if it's entering a renaissance-like cult hit status at this point?
I came to appreciate the Temple of the Ocean King after playing Spirit Tracks. Spirit Tracks did arguably everything better than Phantom Hourglass, but the new Central Tower with its four dungeons was just disconnected because of the lack of backtracking, to the point where it no longer felt like a giant dungeon but more like four dungeons that happened to be located at the same place.
They clearly listened to feedback, but I think it lost a lot of its charm because of it.
@@0cellusDS i agree tbh. I hate to say I like the temple of the Ocean King more than the tower of spirits.
I loved phantom hourglass, and never understood most of the complaints people had about it.
The stylus aspect makes it much less exciting imo. Something as mundane as hit the switch run across the bridge in time is now a big hurdle, because the control scheme is so obtuse and awkward. Same goes for Skyward Sword, Spirit Tracks, and Starfox Zero. Nintendo needs to get with the controller program.
JIRARD THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS GAME
All things aside, Linebecks one of my favorite Zelda characters of all time. Fight me
Linebeck is still my favourite companion in the entire Legend of Zelda series!
Plus his theme is so nostalgic to me, *sigh*
Same
Toon Link with a beard is a cursed image
Preach
A highly underrated Zelda game in my book 😄
Very!
I don't like the stylus aspect, and that's all I need to give it a pass. Just like me trying Skyward Sword, I just know I won't like it. I'm content using a dual stick controller, I don't want to play games with controller gimmicks.
@@EmilyRose900 They have made hacks so you can play it using only the directional pad now
It's garbage
@@EmilyRose900 I never got that attitude... Seems awfully stubborn for no reason.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine if you just don’t like it, but there’s nothing wrong with it and it’s extremely intuitive to boot!
Also couldn’t really make the game as complex as it is without the stylus controls, either. So it’s a boon in every aspect.
Oh now this brings back some good memories. To me Phantom Hourglass is better than Wind Waker, Yeah I SAID IT! Now I love Wind Waker still (and it's story is better), but I had more fun with this game overall. I prefer my steel ship over a raft with a sail any day. Also this game felt more nautical and seafaring-y to me.
The touch screen controls were super intuitive and enjoyable. Also drawing on the map was a lot of fun! Lineback was wonderfully charming, and so was the overall story. You could use your claw mechanism to grab sunken treasure! The time-stop hourglass dungeons were awesome! I adored the music (and the pixel art for the rupees). Plus your fairy didn't have an annoying voice like in some of the other games.
Adventuring around and customizing your ship, all while discovering mysterious islands! Something I wish was in more Zelda games. And my favorite part was bringing this adventure with me in my pocket as a kid. So if real life ever got me down, I knew Link's adventure was with me at least. Man this game was a great time back in the day...
When he said Links Island hopping adventures, all I imagined was link storming the beaches of Okinawa and Iwo Jima
Most of these are mentioning Chuggaconroy...
Have a nice day everyone
Thank you. I was suffering in Pokemon and needed some positivity

Ye boi
This was my first Zelda, too! Though as a kid I got stuck at the point the game decided to include closing the DS as a game mechanic, and as an adult I find that I had an easier time with the controls as a kid than I do now.
I’ll finish it. Eventually.
Probably.
Dude, the Temple of the Ocean King was NOT chill. Hell, I actually got incredibly stressed out there.
honestly tho. first playthrough is so stressful but once you've killed them you just don't care about them anymore
Me too. It’s murder
ToOK is scary and annoying, if you get caught by a phantom and your holding a force gem, you have to either book it and hope the 2nd phantom doesn't catch you, or you drop the gem and make the process even more stressful
I change my mind, the temple is oddly satisfying now
Eh it’s literally built to be speedran
...did no one else know you can use your off hand to quickly access items and menus? L/R to use the item you have equipped, and either ABXY or the dpad to open menus or your map.
And the gold ship parts? Yeah, those can be won through battle mode. Much easier, and far less time consuming. Plus, it’s a different mode, that adds to the fun!
I remember as a kid, one of my cousins broke my DS in half. Luckily for me, most games were still playable as we just hot glued the hinge together. Unfortunately, I never got to complete Phantom Hourglass as one particular part of the game required you to close the DS for some kind of map thing.
that sucks man :( You should try getting your hands on a DS today and completing it, it's definitely worth it IMO.
And now we wait for Chuggaconroy to finish this game
The main antogonist in this game is severely underrated
> You can play this game with one hand
> Linebeck is in this game
Interesting...
Yes yes yes !! A good Zelda game.
Phantom Hourglass is hella underrated, along with Spirit Tracks.
Spirit Tracks is praised for being the better game.
I am so happy he did a positive review cause I have never seen one and have mainly seen hate for this and spirit tracks. So happy to find others who enjoyed it
@@Icespark is it because they're objectively garbage Zelda games?
Antonyo337 Phantom Hourglass i trash, Spirit Tracks is actually really good
They are great, but underwelming as wind waker sequels
Man, Jirard seriously has tons of charisma. The dude makes these videos super enjoyable. Every time I stumble across a couple vids on this channel, I end up picking up the games he talks about after.
I really love the gimmicks in this game. When I was a kid, I played this game. I don't know what to do. There was these two maps that you need to connect so you can go to the next location. I didn't know that you have to close the DS for it to work.
Also drawing on the map is cool! Same goes with blowing on the microphone.
This was my first videogame. I got it from the hospital when my dad passed away from lung cancer and brain tumors from smoking too much. T.L.O.Z. was my dad's favorite game series. Thank you for playing and reviewing it.
Chuggaconroy lping this & jirad doing an episode on the game??!!

Jirard is just Chugga in disguise. It all makes sense now. That’s why Chugga always completes the games he plays.
Fun fact: This is the second series of where there is a constant timeline.
Young link saga
And toon link saga.
I grew up with this and Spirit Tracks, and I personally prefer spirit tracks more because of its music and trains
Herbtastic and connoriffic's random game time trains are big gay
I love Linebeck's theme, it reminds me a lot of Dark cloud 2 for some reason
btw, hope you complete that game one day, it is a really cool game
I appreciate all the Big Lebowski references in this episode, especially since Big Lebowski came out in march. Keep on dude.
For some reason i am really happy that you played this game.
probaly becuase this is my first zelda game,

Personally, it's most often, holding the DS XD
Jirard is the chillest boy. These skits had me laughing out loud in this episode😂
I LOVE Linebeck. He's my favorite sidekick in all of Zelda.
The Sidekick trifecta:
Midna (Power)
Groose (Wisdom)
Linebeck (Courage)
Honestly when I was playing this game as a kid, the stakes felt *super* high. The Phantoms terrified me and the ever present threat of Bellum legit had me not wanting to put the game down for fear of him taking over that little pocket of the Zeldaverse (the entire world to my naïve lil' brain.)
Phantom hourglass and spirit tracks are underrated.
I finally completed the game and let me tell y’all... the whole game was just so diverting! It is now one of my favorite games !! Yes, it can be a little time consuming but it’s totally worth every second, or should I say, every grain of sand 😉 ⏳ If you know , you know!
What does it mean to be so diverting?
@@opaljk4835 Possibly diverted his expectations, he just wrote it incorrectly.
Linebeck is such an underrated character!! Just as how this game is so underrated. I love it so much
4:27 Someone needs to make a gif out of this part. This is the most gif-able moment right here
The classic "oh hey, I didn't see ya there"
When chuggaconroy does a letsplay on a relatively forgotten or ignored game
It's not forgotten or ignored. It's just incredibly underrated
Simon S. I enjoyed it. Only Zelda game where I have only beaten once tho.
That part when you have to physically close the DS to copy the map had me stuck for literally hours 😂
Holy cow! You're doing my very first Zelda game I ever played! I know it didn't age well but this little mess was so important to me growing up it got me into the series. Just booting up the title screen and getting to see that long Vista of sea was one of the most exciting experiences for me as a kid, regardless of how it treated you I'm so glad you got to play it, just getting more people to see this game is enough for me!
I remember playing this game when I was younger and couldn't understand a word of english back then. Funnily enough this game helped me learn english as a result!
2:37
It's official.
Toon Link has no neck.
I thought this episode was a bit disappointing, because it totally neglected one of the great multiplayers in the franchise, and of course ignored the associated collectibles, such as the Big Plays.
Agreed.
The multiplayer aspects of Phantom Hourglass are so dope. Also makes collecting all the treasures / ship pieces WAY easier because you can trade them to other players.
I remember back when my friends were all playing this we would do that, got us all to completion super quick.
Tbh it's hard to review *any* game on the Nintendo DS without touching on that local multiplayer action, that stuff was so sweet at the time, and it's really cool to look back on today.
This game and Spirit Tracks were the first video games I’ve ever played. They are definitely my favorites. Linebeck has been my favorite character in all of the games because I loved his character growth. I remember being an excited 5yr old who was so proud of him in the end.
Thank you sm for playing this underrated game, I really like it 🔥
Please do spirit tracks, that game is my childhood and I'd love to see at least one reviewer I like play it.
WHAT!? Phantom hourglass was my first video game ever; this brings back so many memories. I absolutely adored this game as a child, but I remember I got stuck on bellum, and couldn't beat it without my cousin's help 🤣
I must say I was feeling a bit disconnected from your channel the last year or so, being a fan since 2012. I used to binge your videos a lot and I really like your love, passion and effort Jirard. So chill; I loved it. Watching chill Jirard really soothed me. Thanks for the chillness, man.
What? You never even mentioned Bellum? I actually rather like the main antagonist of this game. I mean yeah sure hes not very complex compared to other zelda villains like Zant, Vaati, Yuga, or whatever... But I actually rather liked that the devs decided to make a zelda villain more simplistic. I mean seriously now EVERY other zelda game up until this point had a villain doing things for a big or story driven reason... Bellum didnt need to have some big motive, or backstory to be interesting. its refreshing after games where you fight a giant pig first, then a shadow of yourself, then an evil wizard who plays energy pong only to turn into another giant pig with a trident... Eventually branching out to Ganons struggle for power, Zants desire for being king of the Twilit, and Ghirhims lust for reviving Demise... All these villains had more complicated reasons for the placement as the antagonist. However Bellums reason for the evil he causes is as simple as a beast leeching on others to survive for itself. Its overly simple yes, but compared to other villains its a breath of fresh air.
I love phantom hourglass to this date. It may not be the 100% best zelda game but its in my top 5 zelda games of all time for alot of reasons that seperate it from typical trends used in other games while also being familiar to veterans and fans of the franchise. I still dont get why people act like Bellum is a bad or forgettable Villain... He at the very least was more threatening than Malladus in my opinion. Its True that Malladus possesed zeldas body... But Cole had the villianous buildup and Malladus just took over for the final phase. Hell even the Demon Train had more buildup than Malladus. Also Bellum TECHNICALLY Introduced phantoms before Spirit Tracks... (Ya hear that Smash Zelda Mains?! PHANTOM HOURGLASS DID IT FIRST!!)
In all seriousness I can see why people didnt like this game. But its still at its core both the Zelda we know and love while also adding in things to keep it interesting enough even if it is a little too easy. But if its too easy then why not just collect none of the heart containers? I see people do that on challenge runs of LTTP, Minish Cap, and even Wind Waker so its not like its impossible to challenge yourself here. Still though it is tempting to grab those heart containers though... Well if you managed to withstand reading this long as long gets comment thank you for actually hearing what I have to say even if its not what everybody likes to hear. If you actually read this entire comment ill be surprised since I'm usually not that attention grabbing. Well anwyways thanks for reading this and not just skipping to the bottom. TANGENT COMMENT OVER! (Mic Drop)
Bellum may also be the scariest type of malice ever created ( I know it's just a theory thing, but it's so perfectly clicking together)

The Legend of Zelda is my favorite games series, and while I saw the potential in Phantom Hourglass it just didn't resonate with me. That being said I think that it could definitely benefit from having a remake of it released at some point in the future.
Great video, Jirard. You have been pushing yourself completing so many games, you deserve a chill game.
Love your show Jirard! Thanks for doing what you do and keeping that chill vibe :D
Thanks for covering this! This is by far my favorite Zelda. People always overlook it! The touch/microphone controls are my favorite part. Makes it feel more immersive. Awesome episode Jirard :)
The way Jirard talked about it, he definitely made me interested in playing the game. Rather than complaining about how it worked and how different it is, he focused on the positives. I was planning to skip this game, based on what others had said about it, but now I'll gonna check it out.
The microphone parts were annoying a lot of times due to how poorly the DS Lite mic worked. I would have loved them if it had a better mic in the DS Lite that was more consistent in working.
I want to start with some chill positivity Jirard I love you bro I love this video!
Phantom Hour Glass as a game is the first Zelda game I 100% didn't like.
Linebeck is the best Zelda companion fight me
I gotta say, really liked the style of this video, it's not always I find your things hilarious (informative, yes, but not always that) - but this was great. The Dude-references were in quite the abundance. And interessting take on the whole chill-vibe it's going for, which I can also sorta see, especially with how small and often minimalistic the islands were going for. Just interessting to hear a game that includes the time system for Temple of the Ocean King being "chill", which, btw, I also like the temple, because they put so much effort into making all your new items useful when reentering.
Jirard’s a hard workin boi 👍🏻
You know what other game is pretty chill? Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Or Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, if you like. I think you should complete that game next.
