'Dramatic Turn' is one of the best recordings in the history of music coming from the best band on the planet. Finding Mangini was brilliant. Iconic.

    MUST listen DT songs:
    1. Illumination Theory (Live version from Breaking The Fourth Wall)
    2. Finally Free
    3. Best of Times
    4. Great Debate.

I don't listen to DT all the time, but this was impressive again. Reminds me of first time listening to 'Change Of Seasons'. The transitions, the bridges, the tightness. Very nice to have listened to them again.

A lot of people didn't like this album for a number of reasons.
    A) people didn't like any dream theater after portnoy, no matter who it would've been
    B) this was a different sound for dream theater as a whole
    C) the drums were pre-programmed by John Petrucci because they wrote it while they were doing interviews for drummers. Mike Mangini came in and just tracked more or less what John had already programmed. People point to this and say this is why he's not a good drummer, which is ridiculous.
This is an enjoyable album, though not in my top. Bridges in the Sky and Breaking All Illusions are the two best tracks on the album for me if you wanted to stay with it. I know you haven't done the Glass Prison because it's so popular, but it's one of their better songs, which is why it's always reacted to.

Breaking All Illusions is one of my all time favorite DT tracks and I like the entire album.
What kills it for me though is the terrible snare sound...

      D) same Images and Words songs structures:
On the Back of Angels = Pull me Under
Lost Not Forgotten = Under a Glass Moon
This is the Life = Another Day
      Outcry = Metropolis pt. 1
Far from Heaven/Breaking All Illusions = Wait for sleep/Learning to Live
I totally disagree with people who complain about it, it even makes me like it more because I find it fun, it's like a parody or an Easter egg, besides the important thing is that the music sounds good. Not only that, they are their own songs and they are not even copying the melody or the rhythm, we are talking about the structure. A lot of The Beatles songs are verse / chorus and nobody complains. A Dramatic Turn of Events is an amazing album.

Thanks for doing this! Love this song, but I do agree about the instrumental section. In fact, this is the very first DT song I think of when considering their songs with instrumental sections that could have been cut a bit shorter. Would have been awesome if they could have tied everything back together at the 9:27 mark (of your vid), though they would have had to find another way to get back into the section at 10:28
All that said, the cool thing about this instrumental section is that it can make sense musically in this song. Since it is a song about revolution/war, I think the chaotic nature of the instrumental could represent the chaos of war and of the people that it affects.

It's hard for me to say that this is my "favorite" Dream Theater album since I've listened to some of their old records so much over the years but unlike almost all other albums, specially recent ones, I just don't find low points or filler songs with anything unnecessary: This was just start-to-finish an amazing record.
Also Dream Theater is one of the most interesting bands live if you can (Because I know it might not be possible for copyright reasons and such) You should try to check out live versions of the songs.

petrucci's riffs here really set it apart from from other songs. The shifting of time signatures is incredible also I feel Rudess is more restrained here not so much virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity and his keys really blends in perfectly with petrucci.

GREAT song from an even better album. I'm the biggest Portnoy fan alive but I have no problem how it all played out. At the time Mike's heart was no longer in Dream Theater. He was involved with Avenged Sevenfold and the rest of the band wanted to carry on. So they did. Sons Of Apollo are great are as are all of Mike's projects. Dream Theater moved on and outside of Mike's relationship with James Labrie all seems healed. As fans we get the best of all their worlds. Thank you for playing & reviewing this great song.

Dream Theater have always been defined by being polarizing lol nothing new there :)
I understand they can milk the instrumental sections, but it's not something they always do, and I for one am happy they're keeping the jam band aspect of classic prog alive.
Have you ever heard John Petruccis' solo album? Jaws of Life is a must listen asap :)

I've heard dream theater before, and even went straight to the Octavarium album. James LaBrie always puts me off. I've seen him in other projects too, and I just somehow don't like his voice. Looking back to it now, I suppose I am doin myself a disservice not focusing on the instruments instead, because they are quite something at times. Maybe a time to delve into DT again for me. Thanks for the reaction and stay safe.

Dream Theater is an incredible band and they are terrific live but I wish they had a different vocalist. James LaBrie is too pitchy for my taste. I prefer Liquid Tension Experiment for that reason.
