      The intro, I'll give you and some in the later stages. The majority of it didn't hit me on an emotional level. But I agree, more time maybe required to get the full impact.

    I haven't listened to this song in quite awhile, but I know the ending always knocked me out. Especially from "We Move in circles..." almost has a Rush feel to it. Now with Peart's passing, it's hitting hard.

    To get the full experience of the gamut and depth of emotions this song goes through, watch and listen to it on the Score: 20th Anniversary live video which was recorded at radio city music hall. It's one of my favorite experiences of all time. It brings me to tears of utter joy and frisson everytime.

    The song is a microcosm of the entire album Octavarium, which basically represents the cyclical nature of things. The entire album is a huge concept, even to the point of there being 8 songs, 8 musical keys, and each song begins on one key, ends on the next key, and the next song starts on that same key. The song ends with the same chords and melody as the song began. The album is so complex that someone wrote a thesis explaining it.

    To fully understand the backstory to this song, you need to listen to the previous few albums that Dream Theater released, starting with Scenes From A Memory. The ending of each of these segues into the next. Scenes ends off with some white noise, which is how The Glass Prison opens up with, on Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. And so forth. The guys in Dream Theater were looking for a way to get off this cycle, which could have continued indefinitely, and so they composed Octavarium to that end.
    There is so much more that goes into this. Eight studio albums. Five current members and three former members, representing five lyrical and three instrumental movements.
    You are completely correct. It is a masterpiece.

  • @paravarium
    @paravarium Před 4 lety +2

    *cracks knuckles* some context. It's not really a concept album, but it does how ever share many themes throughout that all come together in this track. First theme is the ratio of 5 and 8. It's in the artwork, the songs, everything. The second major theme which is pretty clearly laid out is everything coming full circle. The first lyric movement of the song is a guy scoffing at someone average, becoming an overachiever than wishing he had a more simple life. The second a doctor revives a catatonic patient who's been out for 30 years only to have him relapse. Then we have the movement that's full of references to various bands and things that have influenced them now to find out they're the ones being considered influential. The next lyrical movement uses a line or two to briefly sum up each song on the album until realizing being "trapped inside this octavarium" then we move into the finale that tries to tie it all together. Like you said it's a hell of a lot to unpack in one reaction lol but I do love it, my user name comes from combining paradigm shift by liquid tension experiment which is basically instrumental dream theater with Tony Levin on bass, and then of course this song.

    You should check out all the meanings and nuggets behind the song and album, it's mindblowing... I promise.
    If you like longer songs and you like guitar alot (I assume you do) you need to listen to In The Presence of Enemies (part 1 and 2 combined!). 26 minute song with 6 movements. It's not like Octavarium at all or any of their longer songs. It's a Petrucci masterclass, alot of shredding, riffing (like the fastest and hardest guitar parts I have ever seen especialy in the main solo, and I listen to alot of shred). In my opinion it's easily their most underrated masterpiece. Like nobody (almost) recommends this song and I don't know why. Maybe because it's not as emotional? It's more of a story based with main 2 characters: A man (Heretic) and the Dark Master which is symbolized as his personal struggles and darkness that he has within himself. The song has a very sinister vibe to it which I love so much, it's a badass song.

    The first thing I thought while watching/listening to the intro was "Hey, it's Pink Floyd'ish". And I agree completely about both the amazing musicianship and not really getting much of an emotional journey out of it. Btw., they did a whole show playing Dark Side of the Moon. They did it very well and nailed some of the atmosphere but obviously they're not Pink Floyd (and James LaBrie & John Petrucci is not David Gilmour/Roger Waters).

      @@nikelodeon6852 Sure. However, if you're not a DT fan you may not pick up emotionally on it. It's entirely subjective. I wrote in the earlier DT reaction that I've tried several times to get into DT but for various reasons I just couldn't. @@nikelodeon6852 I get that, some of my favorites took effort and time listening. And it doesn't need to be a ballad. I just like to feel a strong emotion. Whatever it is, pain, joy, anger, doesn't matter what. And it doesn't need to even be a great song. If I really feel it. I like it.

    Dream Theater is simply not for folks without a " musical ear"
    It is exctly like the movie Amadeus when the Emperor say oh Mozart this was good but to many notes people cant digest so many notes just cut a few notes here and there and it will be fine,
    And mozart replied EXACTLY what notes should i cut this peice has exactly as many notes as the song require cut one and it will be diminished enogh said!! :)
