In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Illumination Theory by Dream Theater. This live version at the Boston Opera House is from 2014. Dream Theater has again exceeded all expectations! What a glorious piece of music!
Reference Video: • Dream Theater - Illumi... - Hudba
Most bands have one magnum opus that is the pinnacle of their compositional and musical skill. Dream theater has like 30.
Kansas has a few. One is actually called Magnum Opus.
tcot is their magnum opus i think
They also have one called the Pinnacle
@@Marifet124 the dance of eternity is one too
@Haken Strips ending of tcot is untouchable for me.. but i respect your opinion. Mp era is pure gold
six degrees of inner turbulance and change of seasons is gonna be a friday in the future then? noted. cant wait.
SEASONS!
Six degrees from score would be terrific
please do SCORE version of Six Degrees. There's a real orchestra too.
Instrumedley and the 12 step suite as well!
@@Taustavoima Hells Kitchen as well :D
“They’re at the top of their game and the top of their genre.”
And have been for 20 years.
You mean 30 years
@@jrk10as of now you mean nearly 40 years
Dream theater is #2 to zeppelin for me. rush #3. Rest is moot
"I can't do that. And neither can you... probably." The most relatable phrase for any musician who has attempted to learn to play a Dream Theater song.
Very, very short list of humans on this planet who can do what any of these players can do. I can think of maybe 3 or 4 who can hang with Myung or Petrucci, and maybe two who can hang with Jordan. He gets a lot of grief in keyboard circles for "showboating" too much, but kinda part of the showmanship of playing in this band includes playing absolutely absurd parts that leave everyone else slack-jawed and ready to burn their own instruments.
it's both humbling and frustrating to try to play a dream theater song.
The drums aren't that bad.
Well...at least the Portnoy stuff can be played by mortals.
@@logicturtle9838
try doing what myung is almost impossible.....some people speculate that he's actually an android.....listen to the bass solo in ytse jam.
or the part after the intro of the glass prison.
it sounds deceptively simple, but trying to execute it quickly slaps you with humility.
"I can't do that. And neither can you."
No truer words have even been spoken.
FOR most musicians, yes, but not ALL
Nope. Grew up with John, came from same home town, went to Berklee at same time he (they) did and nope, I can't play it.
"He doesn't have much range on that instrument." Jordan changes the key range on the fly so quickly you don't even notice it. It's one of his many wizardry tricks.
Yeah, watch his left hand. He has 2 wheels one for bends/modulation, the other shifts the keys up/down a few octaves depending how far he rolls the wheel.
@@theangryhog It rather looks like the keytar has one pitch wheel, one mod wheel, and two transpose buttons (octave up/down) beside them, which are fairly standard controls on synths; you can see him fiddle with those transpose buttons around 23:05 while playing the same melodic line at different octaves.
@@alensyhn4850 Exactly, my yamaha MX49 has these buttons too
Rudess is goat
I remember a friend showing me Dream Theater when they released Scenes from a Memory. I'd been super into Nirvana and Metallica, and suddenly I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The real beauty is that they have so many songs as epic as this one, there's nobody else like DT in my opinion
Well stated
Agreed
Can relate almost exactly.
Well said.
My first encounter with Dream Theater was with a local radio station that played "Pull me under". I was immediately hooked, but they didn't state the name of the band / song. Later i found an online playlist for that respective hour, so i noted down the 5 or 6 songs (i forgot what time it was exactly) and went to a record shop the next day that offered stations where you could listen to CDs before buying. On the 3rd CD i was happy to find what i'd listened to the day before. Bought "Images and Words" and "Scenes from a Memory" on the spot.
I love how on 26:06 James starts to walk towards Petrucci to get a power refill and at 26:15, when he's full of power, he can get back and sing that extremely high note. What a source of power you are Petrucci!
Please, Dream Theater, "A Change of Seasons". Studio version. Absolutely mindblowing. An Epic.
And you would be surprised by Haken. "The Path + Atlas Stone" or "Earthrise" or "1985".
A Change Of Seasons is just over the top! I love that epic!
Nah he should do the New York live 2000 version. The studio version is too sterile for my liking. Idk if its the production or what. The live versions have much more oomf the them.
@@jonathansefcik473 I'm not sure, but I presume that's the difference between Jordan and Derek. TBH that's why I can't deal with Sons of Appolo, with Derek I always hear the same sound and same patterns. I know I am wrong with this, since he's a versatile musician, but that's how I feel with him. So yes - do a live version.
@@jonathansefcik473 in my opinion they completely ruined the live version by playing the fast part of the song slow. But probably somebody likes this way better.
Holy crap. How have I never heard of this band before? That was freaking magical. Wow
Welcome to the show. :)
Dude I’m the same way. Where the fuck have I been. Good god these guys are freaking amazing.
I love these kinda reaction videos. where the host actually knows what hes talking about and can really appriciate Dream Theater, instead of some people who just say oh, this is good...
I mean ayy, not everyone understand music theory, i dont understand shit about music but this shit still 🔥🔥
The conducter was the one who created the Octavarium Symphonic version of the song with the same name. Awesome
He also scored this song as well. Both the actual studio recording and this live version. He was a fan who became a protege of Jordan's and has gone on to do many things with both Jordan and the band.
He is Eren Başbuğ, are proud genious! 🇹🇷
When I first heard that orchestral part when this song came out I was in a dark place in my life and it really helped me come out of it. I was in a place of darkness and saw the light I suppose. Still one of my favorite pieces of music of all time.
I totally relate.
I have a very similar relationship with "The Spirit Carries On" and Scenes from a Memory in general
I actually struggle with appreciating the Album musically now, because my thoughts are just going back and forth
I hope youre much better now!
Same here, I would wake up every day thinking about suicide. God spoke to me through this song.
A lot of love to you all.
Yep I'm right with you, friend. Rough breakup for me. "To really feel the joy in life / you must suffer through the pain"
Some of these lines really got me to put things into perspective. We're always hyper-focused on current struggles. And this song really helped me pull back and push forward to make it to a better day. Needless to say, fantastic song.
Man, that first symphonic part at 13:10 made me tear up.
I've heard this song a million times, but somehow watching you enjoy it triggered something.
Thank you
You now have to listen to the whole "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" song, which is a 40 minute long journey, but my god is it worth it.
I think Doug is hooked. I discovered Dream Theater 20 years ago while I was still a teenager. I’ve seen them many, many times live. I’ve traveled all around the country seeing them play while I was in my twenties. Dream Theater is more than a band. They are the soundtrack to the greatest memories of my life. I know plenty of others feel the same way.
I feel ya. Discovered them in 1992 (I was 20). Have travelled the country as well to see them, LTE, G3 with Petrucci, drum clinics by Portnoy. My one and only tattoo is the majesty symbol on my arm. Just because their music is so vital to who I am, I would rather lose my sight than my hearing. Not that I want to go blind, but you get my point.
Oh wow, you couldn't have said that any better.
To this day, each and every album can just magically teleport me back to the time and place I first heard them (and listened to them obsessively hundreds and hundreds of times)... most of which, starting with Scenes From a Memory, was when they came out.
Beautiful
Sir I literally cried, more dream theater please....
Me too, that orchestral section always brings tears to my eyes
Every time this man does a reaction video to a Dream Theater Epic, I end up in tears just because it's like I'm hearing the song for the first time again and it's beautiful. Truly is an amazing emotional and spiritual experience.
@@KnexRules8365 Yeah... How can some call this music too technical/unemotional. Come on?!
@@deadnoteguitar it's very technical but they find a balance, and the balance is perfect to get your emotions flowing
11:50 In the modern prog scene, there is a band called Haken. They are inspired from old school prog rock and metal bands such as Dream Theater, Rush, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc but they have their very own unique sound. I will recommend the 17 mins long epic track called 'Celestial Elixir' by Haken. I hope you react to it and do an analysis. Big fan here sir!
Haken is amazing. Their newest album is pretty great as well
+1
@@shanechaisson9383 I second that. I never heard guitars on the djent-low level being used as considerate as in Virus! And I love every possible other of their sounds as well!
@@wolframvonstein4526 all of their stuff is great. And looking at their musical evolution over their albums it’s clear they are one of the greats.
Also waiting on a Haken and Dream Theater show. Would be awesome to see both of them performing together.
A change of seasons is by far their best song for me, an absolute masterpiece
Also sad how some of the lyrics are about Mike portnoy’s mother’s death
yeaa the Carpe Diem part
Reminds me of my mother
Lol no! Even Doug himself said, ACOS is MUSICALLY DISCONNECTED and not as epic as Octavarium and Tuscany. Based on Doug's reaction here ACOS isn't as epic as Illumination Theory too.
@@DreiK96I’m fine disagreeing with Doug on this one, I think ACOS is by far their most cohesive epic. Complex in a meaningful way.
@@DreiK96 Only because it's dealing with a range of drama from the subtle to the intense. Of course, one section isn't going to have similar themes to another. That's part of life, and the metaphoric Change of Seasons.
Illumination theory is a very underrated DT song. Good choice because it's really great.
It's not underrated, it's one of their best stuff. My top 5 fav song
What are you smokin man? This is considered one of the best of DT easily. Pure masterpiece from DT
I don't know with other fans, but it's one of my top 5:
Octavarium
Illuminination Theory
Breaking All Illusions
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Ministry of Lost Souls
Underrated album, in any case.
This was magic caught on film. Just imagine being those Berkley Orchestra and choir students...... They've gone to this school knowing that Dream Theater was birthed from Berkley (2 were graduates, and one was a Master Professor of Percussion). And now, they get the chance to share the stage with the ones who paved the way. And not only share the stage, but play some of the most epic songs in their catalogue.
Only at the end do we learn to "C" the light.
Loved to see how genuinely happy and filled with joy you got by listening to it. Music is indeed a beautiful thing. Thank God for music.
Thank u god for ossilations 🙏
Thank you god for DT
Scenes from a Memory full album. Don't question this - just do it.
Or Twelve Step Suite. How to cope with alcoholism - and double footwork...
I second this
Yes to this idea. We don't care the time required for you and us. Just do it and we will watch.
i read this already several times, i completely agree. Listening to the concept album "scenes from a memory" i a journey you won't forget. Did it several times, enjoyed it every time.
Yessss. I mean DT got great albums and many of them are masterpiece but I can say Scenes from a Memory is THE ALBUM.
Doug, your channel is musically the most interesting i found on youtube. Thanks for all. You must be an amazing teacher
Omg....doug do scenes from a memory, the album, it is the best thing DT has made yet
That's asking him to do a 20 hour reaction video. Not that I would not watch it, but, yeah...
I agree with this, that album is their absolut best album.
Also agreed
Agreed. I would sit through the whole video lol it’s my favorite album all time.
Top album for sure
14:20 Damn, Doug. That's a beautiful sentiment!
Blind Guardians - "and then there was silence", next please haha
Blind Guardian, without 's'
Lol, yeah ok😂
Hansi's voice with DT :)
What, no Bard's Song + Valhalla?
19:26 The Maestro is graduated from Movie Score composition in Berklee actually.
And a huge Dream Theater fan, and had already before this concert arranged and performed several Dream Theater songs with an orchestra, and was specifically chosen because of this for this gig.
@@chessbrainiac Yes, His name is Eren Basbug, He is a Turk. He made an orchestral cover to Octavarium with his student friends in Music School in Turkey in a conservative classical musical atmosphere and with some financial difficulties. After a while Rudess contacted him thanks to this video.
Transatlantic (Portnoy on drums) has some great epic songs: Kaleidoscope, All of the Above, Stranger in your soul, Duel with the Devil
Indeed!
Definitely need some Transatlantic on this channel. If you don’t wanna start with an “epic,” give “Black as the Sky” a spin.
Love Whirlwind. Also some of Neil Morse too such as Momentum.
"How'd they get to C?!?" - I have a theory, an "Illumination Theory" 😂:
If C (or more accurately, lower case c) =speed of light, then they ended the song in the metaphorical light they talk about.
I need coffee. Great video! I learned so many things about this piece here.
Faz muito sentido, será? hahaha
Really? I never thought about that. It definitely has a meaning but I'm not if it's about C/speed of light. It might have a different meaning in the bigger picture, like it does in Octavarium (every song in another key etc.)
Makes sense... jjj
Since C is the only major scale composed entirely of naturals, it would represent the truest path musically for one to follow.
Dream Theater can definitely make you "C" the light.
I can c what you did there
I did not C that one coming.
Too many puns for me. I’m out. C you later.
@@rizkyjelang4737 you mean 'what you D there....'.
@@giancork1656 This is A Bunch of Crap Dude.

I don’t really care for their latest album but the beginning drum part of that song reminds me of some industrial rhythm machine.
Mmmhhahahaha
YES - Gates of Delirium!! THE Masterpiece!
The Revealing Science of God
Absolutely! It's Yes' Magnum Opus! One of progressive rock's highest achievements.
All four sides of Tales From Topographic Oceans back to back lol 🤣🤣🤣
The start of The Embracing Circle sounds like it was borrowed from Close to the Edge
We were at this show, about 7 rows in front of JM. Dream Theater never disappoints! This was a great tour and setlist..Space Dye Vest!!!-Tim
Space dye vest was epic in this show!
Agree, Space Dye Vest was absolutely amazing live
So glad you did this. This was another I was going to recommend. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Have never been much of a DT fan thus far, but your enthusiasm for this piece has made me go and check them out. Thanks Doug for another great episode!
Doug! Thank you for doing this. This is exactly one of the songs that I thought would be great content for your channel. This is just amazing. Got goosebumps and tears in my eyes. What a powerful song.
Simply amazing.
A Change of Seasons, Glass Prison, the Great Debate, Six Degrees of Inmer Turbulence Part 2
Thank you so much! My favorite DT's song, detailed analysis, sincere emotions - it made my evening much better!
Thank you, Doug. This was _beautiful._ Your illumination of the music, and your heartfelt appreciation for the meaning, both.
I could literally watch you break down DT songs all day! Another fantastic reaction/breakdown/lesson. This is such a great band for you channel, because there is a wealth of content (both musically and lyrically) that you can draw from and teach us about
As a huge Dream Theater fan who have seen them live 3 times I love your passion and joy in breaking these songs down for us. As a drummer and singer this band is my inspiration. As someone who only got through music theory2 in college you are my inspiration to get back to the basics and really learn and expand the reading side again! Thank you for all you do!
Awesome! I needed this input. I was really looking forward for you to do it, and I'm not disappointed.
Thank you so much for the vids doug!!
You are the best! My favourite channel and the only one that i wait patiently for every video!!
I’m a huge DT fan and these vids are awesome! They always give me joy!
This was so much fun to experience along with you. They've been my favorite band since 1995, so I love it when other people discover them. I hadn't listened to this song in a long time, and I've never seen or heard a live version. So, it was awesome to watch you react the same way I did the first time I heard it. It really felt like we were watching together. You made my day. Thanks so much.
A long masterpiece that I’m waiting your appreciation is A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers from Van der Graaf Generator, you are not going to regret the experience.
It's scheduled for next week!

watching you react to my favorite songs from favorite bands is the new joy of my life... thank you Doug for doing this!
Back in the 90s, *Dream Theater's* music single-handedly changed my notion of what music can be and do, specifically *"Take the Time"* . For more Dream Theater epicness with lots of theory and instrumentation intricacy to dig into, highly, _highly_ suggest: *"Outcry" "Blind Faith" "Scarred"* & *"In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 1 & 2"* 😁🤘🤙
I've been a Dream Theater fan for 25 years, but you are the real attraction here, Doug. Amazing content. Hope you're well. Thanks for doing these videos.
Doug, almost forgot...
One of their most underrated (I mean by the band) songs is Learning to Live.
I have no idea why. The lyrics, rhythmically, how it's structured and built, the licks, the instrumental parts and its monumental ending... most bands would give a huge part of their lives to have only one like that.
czcams.com/video/hA_MqPRvsJc/video.html
That is my single favorite song of all time, has been since I first heard it...and it has to be played with Wait For Sleep, since they are essentially 2 parts of the same song (and the WFS motifs appear all over LTL).
Definitely a great song in a 13/8 main motif. Myung’s lyrics are awesome how they made it work even though it made Portnoy upset and for the most part banned him from writing lyrics to any more DT songs like that without a structure I believe but it dissuaded him
For me, James Labrie and Kevin Moore make it for me. James Labrie’s voice was at its peak, and with all due respect to Jordan Rudess, Kevin Moore’s keyboard sound was the best that the band ever had.
Loving your analysis and reaction, really helps to appreciate these great songs on a deeper level. Thank YOU for your knowledge and time. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, here we go!
Doug does it again! Just amazing - my new favorite CZcams Channel. Breaking All Illusions Live, Change Of Seasons or Scenes From A Memory! Keep the amazing journey going! My hat is off to you Doug. I love the musical breakdown and I'm hungry for much more.
Thank you for doing Dream Theater song reviews :) very interesting as always
Try Haken-either The Architect or Messiah Complex. I guarantee you'll be impressed.
Celestial Elixir, Visions and Crystallised are worth a listen aswell.
Yeah, you can't just say Dream Theater are the best at their craft without having at least heard Haken.
@@alphaenemyplus8376 Haken Moved away from the DT sound on their last three albums IMO. They're definitely trying to make their own sound, which they have done I have to say.
@@manfredmar well what's crazy is that with Aquarius they STARTED by not sounding much like DT, but then kinda did, but then branched out again.
@@alphaenemyplus8376 Exactly!
I would love to hear that sound again, I hope for the next album they don't do another "heavy" album like Vector and Virus. Not that they're bad, just to keep their discography fresh like it is ATM.

Thanks for this great video. I’ve been a dream theater fan for almost 30 years, but I actually forgotten about this wonderful song. Thanks for helping me re-discover Illumination Theory!

@doug, i love your reaction to Dream theater stuff, the breakdown of the interlude you did was top notch ! Love the music-theory you involve in this!

I always end up in tears when that last section starts those 4 perfect chords. It's amazing to see someone else getting the same joy as I do. Just stunning, life-affirming (musically AND lyrically in this case).
I took my daughter to see the tour for the 'DT' album and this finale was one of the greatest moments of my life, definitely the greatest moment at a gig.
We met JP outside afterwards too and I embarrassed my daughter by totally fangirling 😂
Thank you for your reactions, Doug!
I enjoy watching you experience this magic for the first time, as it reminds me how I fell in love with this music myself.
I would be thrilled to see you cover DT's In the Presence of Enemies (both parts together) or A Change of Seasons next.
Great stuff!

Doug, i'm french and i watch your videos with subtitles but i love how you explain music through both emotion and words. Thank you to share your passion
YES! This is one of my favorites! It's really nice to dive deep into songs like this
Petrucci from 23:10 to 23:50 ... damn. Blistering and blazingly fast, but ANYTHING but mindless shredding. Every arpeggio down to the note is carefully chosen in this whole segment for maximum clarity and musicality. We don't deserve this man. My favorite living shredder.
The greatest musicians ever lived !!!!! And nobody can refute this.
And when you think it's because of their age.....dude....they were already on this level at the age of 20.
It is an honor to listen to their music. If this doesn't bring tears to your eyes....i don't know where things are....i cry all the time by the natural beauty of this melody
Loving to see you becoming more and more a DT fan. I'm really digging your analysis. Keep on rocking!

Yeah, Doug! I was at that show (that's me, first row, balcony *waves*), and it's ALWAYS awesome to re-watch the "Breaking the Fourth Wall" videos! The program from that night is one of my few prized possessions. I LOVE how you break down the transcription in this (although, actually READING transcriptions is my biggest weakness), and explain how they modulate from one key to the next, and break down the time signatures! GREAT STUFF!!!
Haha oh man, at 27:10 when Doug talks about being lifted from the experience 7 years later.... That's spot on. 2014 was my first round of Dream Theater concerts I ever saw. It was absolutely phenomenal.. Seeing them play Illumination Theory and then Finally Free for the encore still give me chills when I think about it. And I got to see them perform twice on the same tour! Once in America and once in Germany. Two of the best times of my life.
Absolutely! Was in the first crowd that ever heard and saw Octavarium played live... still think about it to this day almost 18 years later.
"It's all of these people trusting each other and playing their individual part, trusting the leader to keep them in time, and we offer our sounds, and it blends with everybody else's sounds and it makes this thing that's greater than the sum of its parts."
