I wouldn’t say it’s a performance enhancer. I ran college track for a little bit and smoked during that time and was able to run sub 16 5k so it didn’t mess with my performance much. It’s always been something that’s been rewarding after a good run but something that’s good to cut back on before competitive periods of training.

Nick, this was very cool to see. Props to ya man. I never used while being a hs/college athlete, started using cannabis when I was 21, now 32. Been running in some capacity my whole life, consistent weekly mileage the last 10 years. I’ve been running trail and road races throughout the years, 5k-marathon. The irony for me was, around 23 y/o, I had a random idea one night to go for a night run while high, maybe 20 mins max, and it took me to a mindset and experience I still can’t always tap into, it was unintentionally very impactful on my life to this day. Cannabis for me has opened me up to perspectives and awareness that for whatever reason, my wiring agrees with and really enjoy. I use cannabis always after a run/workout, and would never race while high, that’s just asking too much. I do enjoy yoga or hiking, lower level heart rate type efforts after taking a few bowl hits or rips off the vape pen. Lifting is definitely an odd one personally while high, I preferred being buzzed for a run in my early-mid 20s. I use it regularly, but enjoy it more in smaller doses, minus the occasional event with friends or family. I am in a medically legal state too.

@@joelgranderson7403 Not necessarily true at all. First off, he may or may not run faster without it, but you can't say for sure he would have. smoking weed is nowhere near the same as smoking cigarettes so just because you hear smoking, it's not killing your lungs. Despite that, these days most recreational users smoke weed through various means whether it's blunts which are made out of tobacco, or organic hemp/bamboo leaf and obviously you can just skip that and smoke through a bong which uses water to filter out some of the smoke which makes it less harsh on your lungs. Other than that, he smoked pot for a reason, because if he knew it hindered his performance significantly, he wouldn't do it. The weed could have also motivated him or made him look forward to running and without it, he may not have been as interested in running and he may not have practiced as much as he did to accomplish that 1:57 time. In summary, he may or may not have run faster without it, but you cannot say that his weed use couldn't help him in any way.

A good sativa, or even a hybrid can do wonders. I personally can only smoke some strains because some doe make me too hungry, have cotton mouth or feel paranoid. Trust me!! I know im really late to this video but as a weed enthusiast and a competitive runner i wanted to add my experience. I'm a relatively successful middle distance runner clocking sub 2 in the 800 and low 50s in the 4. I find the hardest time to balance running and smoking is when training alone (aka all of quarantine). Not being with friends and teammates on the trails means my mental state (i run sober) has suffered and i am increasingly anxious and pessimistic. My time trials alone have been less than promising tho i believe its more in line w mental effects of marijuana than physical. I have no trouble completing runs or dealing with muscle aches as its a biproduct of the sport. But the mental health aspect is so important in running and if youre a recreational smoker/runner you have to be more aware of your mental health

@@to2159 Use a vape if you wanna avoid the impact on your lungs. You can get handheld ones for way under 100 bucks these days and they do the job for occasional stoners. I personally smoke daily since I prefer the ritual and I went from a 25 minute 5k to a 18:23 in that time. I train about 10-20 hrs per week (running, cycling) and honestly the impact of bad sleep, bad nutrition, bad stress management, injury prevention, fatigue & effort management is much higher than the effect of the smoke on my lungs. It probably affects top end fitness the most but I've built a crazy good aerobic base this season all while being stoned pretty much every day and every workout. It's just anecdotal of course but that's my 2 cents on it. Honestly all martial artists I know are big stoners haha. Something about it just works I guess. I wouldn't worry too much about and always listen to your body. And if you wanna avoid it altogether use the vape.

I train for marathons and get about 50-60 miles a week of running in; I find that smoking, dabbing, or vaping before running really helps me to get into a “flow state” while I’m running, especially if I’m listening to some of my favorite music. I feel like it allows me to focus more on my form and how my body interacts with the world around me as I’m moving around, and it also helps alleviate some of the stresses or tensions I might be feeling before or after a run so that I can feel more loose. It really helps me when I stretch and do breath work before or after runs, and THC and CBD both really help me to come down from a good trail run and get the munchies I need to get food in me to regain the energy and calories I burnt off. I also feel like being high while running gives me a mental boost that I otherwise wouldn’t have in a sober state of mind, which allows me to sort of focus on being in motion over putting the work into motion and i find I often carry myself faster than I need to be going sometimes. Overall, running while high helps get me out the door in a way that works to help me appreciate the act of running, the individuality that comes with each person’s mindset and approach to training, and the natural world around me as anyone who’s been exposed to the outdoors and trees and birds and things while high undoubtedly has been like “damn, nature’s cool.” I love running for the lifestyle and the daily things you get to see and do that just make you feel good!

I'm a 19 year old basketball player on a D3 college team, and while I am not a super high level athlete, I do find using marijuana helps me with multiple things. I have a lot of knee, and tendon pain from lots of jumping during practice, and when I smoke afterward, it almost completely takes away those pains, and reduces swelling, along with cbd topicals. This helps me feel better about not taking rest days, and helps me get good sleep to recuperate. I know certain people that like to smoke before playing ball, however I find, even with a tolerance to the effects of THC, it still tends to slow me down. On the contrary, I have many times smoked before just shooting around, and I have found that I can get into a very interesting flow state with my shot, and handling. Like Nick said in the video, it can help you feel all of your muscles independently, and you can use that to your advantage in practice. All in all, smoking for recovery and practice can be good for basketball, however, being high in game is a very bad idea for the average player.

The last time I smoked happened to be yesterday, where I had 3 hours of PE class in the afternoon (I'm in highschool but I'm studying science of sport along with the other regular subjects like math, biology, etc. those courses are called scientific and technological courses (in Portugal, where I'm from)). What I found out was that while I was high (not HIGH, just slightly high feeling that buzz) my legs and body felt much lighter so I ran like crazy that day, much more than what I usually do.

Its definitely not absolutely necessary but once in a while when you need help calming down and focusing, weed really really does something special. :)

I smoke one gram a week.
A TINY one hitter after a 7.5mile run, and another three to four hours before bed.
Been having some weird fainting spells with chest pains lately. Had covid in early March, felt like I was wearing a weighted vest till a couple weeks ago.

I use to run track in high school and weed helped me recover a lot faster and be able to withstand larger amounts of stress on muscles

I never quite got the smoking/weed thing (or drinking for that matter...!).... a strange concept to me.... though I guess I'm in a minority lol....
I'm generally above the median happy line anyway... :)

Drugs like alcohol and marijuana make some people feel good and that's it. If you don't want to, all the better for you, you're abstaining from an unhealthy habit.

Hey Nick, I'm a cyclist both road and mountain. For me I think it puts me in the zone when mountain biking, I feel I carve thru the technical sections better and I think either it delays fatigue or masks it can't tell which really. Now on the flip side my buddy, it kinda affects his decision making in the technical, I will see him not as technically proficient when stoned. I'm 54 years old. My main question on the weed thing if you do smoke it in flower form and roll joints, I have always wondered if it affects your cardio and respiration. I can't believe anything you inhale can be good for either of these, but one thing for sure is that they are no where near as bad as cigarettes, not even close. I might take a one week break from the reefer and see, I'll check my heartrate while on the bike and get back to you, don't hold your breath though, dunno when I'm gonna get motivated enuff to stop the weed for the week. As far as the recovery part, whether or not it helps I definitely don't think it hurts, I've done some intense leg training in the weight room and go out the next day and do intervals and my legs feel fine. I don't do aspirin or any man made pills. Peace man.
