It was so HOT over this last weekend! My husband and I had to come up with some ways to care for the chickens during this crazy heatwave! We used ice water, ice blocks, frozen veggies/fruits, and a homemade mister! They all made it!

We freeze used gator ade bottles or water bottles. Then you can place these all around their cage. Also I have a garage bag in our freezer to put the melted bottles & rinsed off bottles back in the freezer so nothing touches our food.. Use your outside grill to bake your pizza. NEVER USE YOUR OVEN IN THIS HEAT. When it is this hot I just crank up our gas grill put the pizza in on the grates & TURN OFF THE GRILL SHUT THE LID it cooks perfectly.. I use timers ANYTIME I'm doing more then just cooking one thing because it's just to easy to get distracted. Dang, wish I had known about your chicken problems. I could have helped a great deal. So many folks suggested misters yup, misters are great. Plus placing a sprinkler on top of the coop. But here's one more. If you don't already have some burlap get some. Soooo many uses for burlap around the garden/ homestead. In this instance drape some burlap down one side of the coop. Leave a mister spraying the burlap and place a box fan in front of the burlap so the air is pushing through the burlap and into the coop. Ta Da, you just built a swamp cooler giving your chickens their own old fashioned air conditioner. It really works. Plus I would place some low sided tubs or tub tops that can hold water in the coop. Pour in some water, a couple of inches, add some cubes and some of those frozen fruits and vegetables and just let the chickens figure out how nice it is to stand in the water and take their own water baths. Hopefully we won't be seeing those temperatures ever again but best get prepared just in case. Have a great day. Oh, I hope you didn't throw away your burnt pizza, the chickens would have loved peices of your pizza. They don't know what " burnt" is. 🐓🍕🍻😄

@@asobimo5532 here's something to check out. Thermoworks has a wonderful timer with 4 timers built into it. I can set one for say 4 hours to check on a beef brisket I have in one of my smokers, another for another hour to check on my Babyback ribs. Another for say a couple of hours to check on my pulled pork and still have one left for anything else that pops up. All in one unit so I'm not misplacing timers. They come in a assortment of colors and are used by home cooks and professional chefs alike. Have a great day. 😃🌤⌛

Get foil emergency blankets and use those to drape over not only windows of the house but the chicken coop AND over the crops that will die from the intense sunlight. It saved my sugar snap peas last week. The peas that were in sunlight got scalded while the covered ones remained lush and green. It also helped having it in the windows. It was considerably more tolerable in the 115 degree weather. I think it would definitely benefit a chicken coop.

Radiant heat is quite bad too so shadecloths and also out the coop under the tree and not next to the shed thing which will reflect heat and also air flow try put a fan next to them to circulate air and frankly a bigger and higher coop with air vents at the top to let hot air out would be great and there all squished in together so it may be better to leave the coop open so that they can leave and try find somewhere cooler if they want to and be able to come back for water and food a lot of chickens will stay in trees when its hot.

Also dont use the oven in the heat we usually in australia have bbqs and cook outside and just make salads etc indoors. Or pre cook stuff at the coolest time air out the house overnight close it up and keep the cool air in at dawn and then just reheat via a microwave. Aka live off your freezer meals and dont use the stove/oven heat producing things

I’m fairly new to your channel and love it so much that I’m now watching older videos while I’m at dialysis. One of the things I absolutely love about you is how real you are and that you leave your “learning experiences” in the video. Coincidentally, I just watched a pizza video before this one and already knew you’ve had success in the pizza department. It was also nice to hear the stories about your chickens. They are so fun to watch. Keep up the good work. 👏👏

Yikes! We had that level of heat here around then and we're zone 3b. Some of our public picnic benches were softening and we had to work hard to keep our small pets cool enough!

Haha we are just alike… as I get older I swear there are more “squirrel” and “crap now it’s burnt” moments than I care to admit… I start in one room to do one thing and get side tracked to do a million more and my hubby has to stop me and tell me to go to bed before it’s midnight and I am tired and cranky the next day… it just seems like there is always something to do!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Been wondering about you guys... and the dogs... and the chickens. Didn't know I had to worry about the pizzas too!!🤣 Sorry - that wasn't very nice. Each time you bring up not using timers, I can't help but shake my head. You surely have pockets on your favorite robe, right? Set a timer...go do all the many things you're always doing & voila!! No tragedies from the kitchen! Ok... enough of the lecture... you are such a good chicken mama & you're married to an official "KEEPER"! What a great guy to be so helpful & concerned about the chickens. (I know you said he originally didn't want to get them.) So to me... he does what he does out of love... for you & your chickens. Such a good guy & handy too! I mean... how many of us know somebody that would hold a finger on a chickens lung, while making "OMG - WHAT DO I DO " phone calls??!?? Give him a hug for me, make him another pizza (on the grill outside maybe?) & go buy yourself a timer!! 😉🤣🤣🤣😉
Hang in there with the heat... be well & I'll be looking for a Little Bo Peep update!! 🤗🤗😎

Amazon has misters that attach to fans which has helped save my chickens along with watermelon at the hottest part of the day. You also need a larger space for more breathing room. Also put electrolytes in their drinking water.

  • @amandaevensonthehappyhippi5110

I love watching your videos. I am gonna show my husband this one, we got chickens and they are "mine" but he does all of the.building and fabricating of the things they need too :) I have to show him that I am not the only person on the planet who gives ice and I c e water and frozen treats to chickens when its hot ♡♡ thank you for being real, I totally appreciate it and adore you. Hope your family stays safe through thr crazy heat!!

We have those high temps every summer, the frozen veggies are good. But not necessary the hens will be fine just give them some shade. I be careful about the water baths, we did that to a hog one time and the hog died, it shocks them.

I used to not timers either. I found it takes my anxiety down because its just one more thing to not think about.
If Im out in the garden I take my timer with me- so I know immediately when something is almost done.
Trust me its a "Time saver" 😆

Do not water your plants after the first or second hour of daylight or you will steam/cook your plants. Mulch on top of the soil will help hold in moisture. Trust me, I live in Texas where it's over 100degreesF almost half of the year.....every year. water about 9 or 10pm and agai right before the sun comes up or directly afterwards. Good luck.
