15" Apple MacBook Pro Review (2017, Kaby Lake)

  • Lisa Gade reviews the 2017 15” MacBook Pro, Apple’s mid-2017 refresh with Intel 7th generation quad core i7 Kaby Lake CPUs and AMD Radeon Pro 5xx series graphics. The casing and core features are the same as the 2016 15” MacBook Pro we reviewed, and Apple has simply refreshed the CPU/GPU and tweaked the Butterfly keyboard. This is Apple’s largest and highest end laptop, with a price tag starting at $2,399 US.
The Mac has a 2880 x 1800 IPS wide gamut Retina display that’s still among the best on the market, and it has 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, a super-sized trackpad and a classy aluminum unibody design. It ships with Mac OS Sierra and Apple’s iWork and iLife suite of programs. As ever, it weighs 4 lb. / 1.83 kg, making it one of the lightest 15” notebook computers on the market and it’s remarkably thin at 15.5mm. We benchmark the Mac in macOS Sierra and Windows 10 to see how much performance has improved from the 2016 Skylake model.

this is why we have people over the age of 30 still living at home . we live in a consumer age where owning a 3,000$ laptop is more important than puting that cash towards a down payment on a home. it's not even the consumers fault. the world is so tech driven that we all depend on it and need it. Lisa's videos are amazing, I've watched all of them, but I cringe at all the price tags.

The 5-GPUs are essentially rebadged 4-series cards (with slightly higher memory clocks about 2% better performance), but the GPU selections have been shifted down.
Base configuration goes from the 550 to old midrange 555 and the high-end config gets the old build-to-order 560.

I had to replace my 2009 17" MacBook Pro this year (thanks in part to being able to upgrade it over the years), and I just couldn't justify the cost for the latest iteration of the MacBook Pro. I tried one out, wasn't a big fan of the keyboard, and really didn't see much use with the touch bar. I ended up getting a Thinkpad P50, which thus far has been working out great. Kind of bummed that I had to leave Apple, but the Windows transition wasn't as bad as I had expected.

Great review Lisa, but it looks like you are comparing the 2016 MBP w/ AMD 455 with the 2017 w/ AMD 560. The proper comparison would be the 2016 MBP w/ AMD 460, which had a Firestrike score that was almost exactly the same as the 560. I think the difference between the 460 and 560 was literally 1.86 Teraflops vs 1.90 Teraflops for the 560. Both are 14nm, and they are literally within about 2% of each other.

I was never worried that Kaby Lake will provide a big difference when ordering the 2016 model last fall. Typical Intel lackluster CPU upgrade.
Dongle life is actually not a big deal. TB3 displays, USB-C cables to external disks make life easy. The only dongles I use is a USB-C to USB-A for an older USB hub (I could also just change the cable here) and rarely a USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

It's funny that the updated MacBook Pros and iMacs are available before the iPad Pros

Not a very fair comparison, as the 2016 in your tests mounts a 455, not a 460 radeon, and you are comparing it with the 560, not the 555. Nice video though.

You might have gotten a poorly quality-controlled keyboard on the 2016. I bought and returned a few due to minor defects and it was a crapshoot how clicky and consistent the 2016's keyboard was.

Thanks for warning us about the dongles that would have to go along with a MacBook Pro. I am presently a Windows user and am consider switching over to Mac given the extent of satisfaction I have seen my friends' have while using their own MacBooks, whether they are Pros or not. But the jump for this 15-inch (which is a size I have gotten used to) MacBook Pro is enormous. I cannot fathom paying 4x the price of other comparable Windows laptops presently existing in the market.

I can't say no to anything this lady says. It just seems so honest and true and like a mom wanting only good for her son
