      Same I ride a lot of hills and single track with my dad for the last few years so I’ve naturally got really good at downhill riding and I always shift as high as I can go because I notice I always get sketchy with engine braking. So when i started racing at Glen Helen I would get passed on the jumps or stadium cross section but soon as we get to the hills I pass 450s on my 250f and that’s how I make up so many positions on the first lap cause I don’t push really hard to get in front of them until we go down hill cause then I shift up and gas it by them

    On the bumps like this You have to stay on the gas and as long as possible and stable rather than playing with it. When You need to brake it is better to use the rear brake and gas simultaniosly.

    Haters gonna hate, but Rekluse auto can help settle the bike in situations like this too. And... in slicker and long moto conditions eliminate the chance of stalling. Just sayin'.

    • @AjCatanzaro
      @AjCatanzaro  Před 3 lety

      Yes but it eliminates engine brake which is why any high level rider wouldn’t use an auto clutch. (Unless the newer versions allow for engine brake).
      When it comes time to hit the brakes, engine braking is an absolute must. Without it you just skid

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137 Před 3 lety

      @@AjCatanzaro I’ll preface with I’m 100% on board with your methods & techniques. I’m not here to rabble rouse. I enjoy your content and you are making the riding world better. Thank you.
      That said, the “high level riders won’t use auto” is a very dated position. There are plenty of admitted (and not) high level riders, especially in XC racing using them. Keep an open mind. Just like with neck braces and air suspension, the narratives for/against those technologies are losing ground these days.
      1) They could remove engine braking. In a out of the box setup that would depend on the technique used for this section. Clutch and brake use at the top of the hill would play a big role. Pull in the clutch or hit the brake at the top and you could drop the RPM low enough to go into a Freewheel. Is that always a bad thing if you know it’s coming? It would reduce the weight distribution to the front wheel, balance and settle the suspension over the bumps, which is largely what you’re teaching here. From what I remember... even in standard setup, you will have some engine braking if backing off the gas from high RPM.
      2) The skidding part I don’t understand, that’s brake pedal pressure. No different than riding an electric bike or small bore 2T with minimal/zero engine braking. You adapt to the machines engine characteristics. Until recently I had very little 4-stoke experience. I pretty much hate engine breaking because my 2T muscle memory isn’t expecting it.
      3) The clutch engagement points can be set up differently at both the lever and inside the engine. Ryan Hughes yelled at me for “ruining” my engine after his first moto on my 250. I deciphered his complaint and readjusted the engagement point at the lever for his second moto. I doubt he even remembered the auto-clutch was in the bike 🤣 In the video footage of him on the choppy downhills he doesn’t appear to be freewheeling.
      Just like suspension, most people have no idea what the hell they are doing and/or haven’t ridden an auto that was tailored to their riding style. It’s no different than forum warriors saying “air suspension sucks...” Meanwhile riders like Ferrandis, Webb, and Barcia are using it. With as many student bikes as you ride, I’m sure you’ve noticed how chitty some people make their bikes 🤣 Most people don’t even know what their sag is, use terrible line selection and technique, and will bitch all day about their suspension.
      My point is, don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. It’s just a tool and can be a really damn good one when setup correctly. Even for pros.
      Keep up the good work! Enjoyed the Supercross stuff.
