He only scored 16 goals in all competitions for Malaga, 14 in La Liga, which isn't bad at all, but it's not 20+. And while it was a fairly good season for him, I don't remember him getting too much attention around Europe as a "future star". Keita Balde (who got the spot for that 16-17 season) was far more widely viewed as a serious talent. He also scored 16 goals, but those were all in Serie A, and he was playing as a Winger, not a central striker. I remember there were many teams looking to sign him, and there were even rumors about interest from Spain to call him up, as he was born in Spain (in fact, in one Fifa game edition he had spanish nationality). Sandro could had been a good shout if his "wonder season" had come maybe one year before, but I think it's fair to give the 16-17 spot to Balde.

Sturridge shouldn't have been anywhere near this list! He was excellent for Bolton in 2011, scoring nearly a goal a game, was a great squad player at Chelsea (good enough to make several England appearances and score a great backheel against Man United), and then scored 11 in 16 for Liverpool the season before his "one season wonder" season - including a hattrick against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Even after his best season, he was a key man in Liverpool's Europa League run under Klopp and even scored a fantastic goal in the final. He managed a quietly excellent 13 goals in 25 apps in 15-16 as well. He obviously had a terrific year in 13-14 but that's because he was clearly a terrific player.

A detailed look at the state of Crotone would be nice, going from Serie A in 20/21 with a 20 goal a season striker (Simy) to Serie C by 22/23. Two relegations in a row, something surely has to be wrong at that club.

He had "wonderful" chances to create context of that sort with many Italian clubs which have played in Serie A and now they are either gone (Carpi, for example), only active at youth level (like Chievo Verona) or reformed as phoenix clubs (Palermo, Catania, Cesena, Bari, Foggia, Livorno, Ancona, among many others). But any time he's been suggested to make content of that sort with (former) Serie A sides in decline, Alfie just (deliberately) omits them.

@@WERTYUIO821 Really. It was a story to be seen because of our mentality not being ready for clubs who go down two levels in two seasons even though it's technically possible. And Crotone, with Junior Messias (now at AC Milan) were quite entertaining for their record. Messias seems to have adapted decently well. But I think it's also easier to recognize many, many more players than you think are genuine journeymen. It also makes you appreciate the few who can keep up the numbers at such high levels across systems, roles, clubs and cultures.

Crotone is an Italian club with Greek origins. Currently playing in Seria C/C, recently being in Seria A.
Founded in 1910, they went through the persecutions that Mussolini did to anything associated with Greece in early 1930s(how much he hated Greece, how poetic that Greece made him be written in history as an idiot world wide 10 years later).
In ancient times their city, Kroton, was quite successful in Olympics.
Their nickname is "The Pythagoreans" and it is a nice underdog story to follow and hope for the best. There are not many clubs from south Italy in Seria A, only Napoli being a regular so a hopeful Croton was nice to have. Basically the most unique out of the clubs all around based on everything.
I recently won the Champions League with them in FM so I may have some bias.

Oh man Guiza, I would like to provide some context for his misfortunate saga as a Fenerbahçe fan. He signed for Fener in the summer of 2008 with a club record transfer fee (still to this day) as the top scorer of La Liga in the previous season. We've also brought in Euro 2008 winning coach Luis Aragones and in the previous campaign Fenerbahçe almost made it to the semi finals of UCL putting a really good display against Chelsea so the expectations from Guiza and the team were sky high. However the things didn't go quite well in 08/09 season and we finished the league in 4th place while being knocked out of the group stage in UCL and with the club record fee weighing on his shoulders Guiza also failed to meet the expectations. Well , that should not have been a problem, after all Fenerbahçe is kind of known for its underwhelming strikers and it's kind of a banter in Turkey but the criticism this guy received was nothing like I'd seen before and I doubt I will ever see anything like that again. He became a nationwide laughing stock, it's like every sports pundit on any type of media was making fun of him, even the most popular TV shows at that time was making Guiza jokes and kids would call each other Guiza if they missed a sitter during a football match.
I remember around that time he broke up with his wife and was paying alimony and his personal life also started to have a huge coverage on Spanish and Turkish media which only damaged his self-esteem even more. So the topscorer of La Liga, the man who helped Spain win the Euros and challenged the likes of David Villa and Fernando Torres became a shadow of his former self, constantly missing easy opportunities and dramatically hugging the woodwork (as shown in the pic in the video) while looking like he is at the verge of crying. That being said, the guy had class. He was silky with the ball and had good movement and he always showed up in the big matches. He showed glimpses of his skills from time to time, oddly he would always score in Beşiktaş derby. In the 09/10 campaign he managed to score against Trabzonspor as well but the match ended as a draw and we bottled the championship on last day...
However his most iconic moment during his time was Fener came in 2010/2011 season and after that moment, a lot of Fener fans well at least me started to see Guiza differently. He only made one appearance that season coming off the bench against Bucaspor away and boy did he make it count... Fenerbahce came back from a 3-1 deficit and Guiza scored the goal that put us up front 3-4, it was one of the craziest moment of my life and one of our fans fell off from the bleachers after Guiza scored (he's ok). We won the match 3-5 and it was one of the most pivotal matches of Fenerbahçe's most iconic title win when interviewed after the match Dani Guiza couldn't hold his tears back and as a result of non-stop media bashing and pressure he delivered an emotional speech and cried during the interview. And in that moment, he redeemed himself in my eyes. So this was the story of Guiza, it's a shame he never reached up to the heights he could have but I still believe if it weren't for that club record transfer fee he would've left a better impression on Turkish football fans. His performance was not utterly terrible, certainly better than any of our strikers' we had in last 10 years!
Thank you Guiza for the memories.

    2013-14
My respects for Paloschi, but I think Josip Drmic is an even more notorious one-season wonder case.
During those months, Drmic scored an impressive 17 Bundesliga goals for Nürnberg, almost a half of the 37 goals Nürnberg scored that season as they were relegated as second from bottom.
Drmic was then transferred to Leverkusen, where his six goals in a single season didn't convince the club to keep him for longer, eventually selling Drmic to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Things got even worse for Drmic at Gladbach, where a mix of bad attitude and a string of injuries, an unimpressive loan spell at Hamburger included, all of them affected his form over the years. After being released by Gladbach, Drmic joined Norwich City, where his lack of fitness and enthusiasm were still evident, and he only scored 1 goal in 2019-20, as Norwich were relegated from the Premier League as dead last.
Drmic only managed to find a good run of form in a 18-month loan period at Rijeka. In June 2022, he was allowed to leave Norwich City in order to join Dinamo Zagreb on a free transfer.

Like that entire leicester side was a one season wonder, but while Kante, Schmeichel, Mahrez and Vardy have all gone on to have top careers, it was technically Huths third title and Morgan also won the FA cup, Albrighton has kinda been just a steady backup since behind a succession of attempted Mahrez replacements on the right and Barnes on the left, and Drinkwaters career fell apart after moving to Chelsea.

He actually received a nomination for Championship Player of the Year in 13-14, his most prolific season, as he played an important role for their promotion. And after the 15-16 season he was still decent for them. Chelsea didn't sign him inmediatly after Leicester's PL winning season, he played one more season at Leicester and did ok (maybe not brilliant, but he was ok). As a Napoli supporter with many friends who support AC Milan I have funny memories about Antonio Nocerino. For the whole 2011 summer transfer campaign AC Milan had this gimmick of a "Mister X" player that they would buy as a key piece for their midfield, for months the object of desire was Marek Hamsik, who played for my Napoli, however, Napoli was back in the Champion's League for the first time after 20 years, so they were not going to sell him. As a replacement, they bought Nocerino from Palermo more or less for free, however, surprisingly, Nocerino played so well in that season that Milan ultras even made a song for him, crowning him as the awaited "Mister X". I still remember my classmates singing that song during P.E. hours, it was actually quite catchy.
Time would show that Marek Hamsik was actually leagues above Antonio Nocerino, but during his initial season at AC Milan the difference seemed to be not that huge.
