Biologist here. The reason lizards live on so many small islands, is their low metabolism allows them to survive for weeks without food. They often get washed out to sea when floods or storms hit, and just drift until the hit land. Then its lizard business.

So it is "an umbrella" but "a university or a uniform". Not sure if that´s something native speakers are aware about since it probably comes naturally. My mom who learnt German at school in Poland also sometimes mentions grammar stuff I was never aware about since I as a native didn´t really need those rules.

Actually, English isn't a regulated language, thus there is no correct way to speak English. Both are correct.
Native English speakers do know, but some others think that because it starts off with a vowel it's an an. It begins with a "y" sound, which is in the consonant version, so I don't know what is going on here.
I understand it now. "U" in "Umbrella" works like a plosive (a sound which sounds explody) and two plosives can't be next to each other. "U" in "University" is a sound that flows more so it can be next to a plosive.
Fun fact :-"U" doesn't make a vowel sound, it makes a "you" sound but "Y" is a consonant so with (some) words starting with "U" will have an "a" next to it. Basically the sound matters.
