Nutkin Farm baby parade, 2023

  • My fourth year of tracking and ranking the macadamias I’ve planted at Nutkin Farm. The varieties under review are again 246, 741, 835, 842, A38, G, J, P, R and MCT1. Many of these trees are shown every year, allowing you to track their progress. As you’ll see, some are getting too big to be called “babies” for much longer!

    Merry Christmas Daniel, your trees are looking beautiful and it’s very exciting to see how many macadamias they have on them. All the best.🙂

    Great looking trees, Daniel 👏
    I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who’s had issues with stray cows and goats. Goats eat anything and everything 😡 Isn’t it frustrating? I’m still trying to deal with them, installing fencing at huge costs.
    A very Merry Christmas to you and wishing you a wonderfully successful 2024 🎉

      @nutkinfarm  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks Gregory. We don’t have many feral animals that eat macadamias or the trees here, although feral pigs are a problem in Queensland north of me, and fencing seems to be only a partial solution. Costly here too.

    I just bought an A203 from Daleys, I can't wait until it gets big enough to grow nuts!
    I've been trawling through your videos looking for tips. Would you consider making a video of advice for people growing macadamias in their backyard?

    • @nutkinfarm
      @nutkinfarm  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi Jem. The A203 is a good choice - it’s a nice shaped tree and it flowers like you wouldn’t believe.
      Not only did I consider doing a video on growing macadamias in your backyard yard - I did one! Here’s the link: czcams.com/video/i4tH8EPhn6g/video.htmlsi=Dj8eqDivEoBCwuSF - enjoy!

    Very good work, your young Macadamia trees are superb. I am in the process of starting my Macadamia plantation currently it is in the nursery I hope that mine will one day be like yours. Is it possible to say how long your plants took before starting to produce, what should I do or not do to have rigorous plants that will be able to produce a lot and finally it is serious if the soil has a PH of 7 what advice can you give me please? Happy New Year’s Eve to you.

    • @nutkinfarm
      @nutkinfarm  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hi Mr D. Firstly a pH of 7 is great. I do have other videos on what you can feed baby macadamia trees to make them grow. I also recommend the episodes of the Macadamia Show that I’ve done with Matti Kelby, who is starting from the beginning like you and has had great success.

    P will come good, see what I mean about the G’s vertical growth, no good.

    • @nutkinfarm
      @nutkinfarm  Před 7 měsíci

      It’s hard to see why G was such a star performer in tests, but maybe we’ll be saying something different a few years from now? I’m far from convinced at the moment!

      @@nutkinfarmI have observed through my own experiences that cutting them back and letting the big long whippy growth be tip pruned to form a branch provides some horizontal growth, they do perform when you feed and prune them but not really the variety I am after in the short term for my ventures 😮

    I’m wondering if you have tasted the raw A203 and A4 and which was is better. Also does the A203 produce a large kernel?

    • @mattikelby5571
      @mattikelby5571 Před 7 měsíci

      Hi John, I have a few A203 and they produce a decent size nut with a thick shell, kernel size is average I would say.
      Very heavy flower and prolific cropper, but you’re still waiting 5 years to get anything decent, well for here anyway.

      Hi Mattie Kelby,
      I can’t source 2 Hawaiian varieties that I’m wanting, the 849 and 816. There’s really no large macadamia tree supplier in WA. Years ago I bought different varieties from Macnuts WA. I just want a couple of each, do you know a supplier that can sell into WA?

      @@johnmanera4097 you would probably have to source the quarantine arrangements your self, an alternative would be to bring H2 nut across the border yourself on a plane, grow them up and bring in Scion wood and a grafter?macadamia nuts are allowed into the state, I took some across in July for the boys when I was working in Karratha no problems.
      I have 816 and 849 here on trees that are 2-6 if you need scion wood.
