  • It’s a commonly asked question for those thinking about planting or buying a macadamia farm. The answer isn’t “one size fits all” and expert minds have changed over time, but I’ll do my best to help you decide what’s right for you.

Thanks El Vegas! It’s a boring subject to many. I only wanted to do one video on it so I made sure to be thorough. All the best to you in Mexico!

I'm a 10m person I've planted my personal property with A203 at 10x4 but that's mainly because of a water issue. The company has set all new plantings at 9x4. My thoughts on this topic are 8x4 is ok smaller verities eg A203 we 17 year old one's at this with grass in the middle, but anything else i would go for 10x4 the extra space just makes working the trees easier but it's a longer term commitment, if you are planning to sell in future say 10/15 years go 8x4/9x4

Hi Trent! I was hoping you’d give us your perspective. That’s such good information. Interesting that even the larger outfits are deserting 8x4. If anything I thought they’d hang on to tight spacing longer. If I were doing this 20 years younger I’d be doing 10m like you.

Spacing would depend on the soil too. If the soil is fairly infertile then closer spacing won’t cause too many issues as the trees will not grow into 30 meter tall monsters.

Hi Karl. Yes I agree. Matti made a similar point.

I've got different spacings. I think the 4m inter row spacing is a bit too close. I think that the 5m inter row spacing is better. Also pruning is still required to stop the trees from getting too dense.

I tend to agree Mike. A couple of people have suggested things like 9 x 2.9m but that’s just asking for trouble.

No, thank you for prompting me on the subject - it’s actually really important and there was a gap that needed filling. Glad it answered what you were asking.

Thanks Daniel. You have seen the photos I have sent you of trees of the same age (1993 odd) and variety in a different soil type the same size as your trees planted 13 years later (2006)
    Don’t believe everything you hear!
150+ acres left to plant out on top of the trial block? 😊

Not quite that many Matti! But you did make a good point. Some soil types might tolerate tighter spacing depending on how they influence tree height, ground cover success and even drainage and erosion.
