NOTE: This is a re-upload of our old video posted December 2, 2020, that was edited due to some technical difficulties. Thank you :)
26 years ago, in the early hours of 2 December 1994, the M/V Cebu City of William Lines Incorporated (WLI) sank at Manila Bay, after a collision with the container vessel M/V Kota Suria.
The M/V Cebu City was bound for Tagbilaran after a late departure from Manila, when the larger container vessel rammed its starboard side, causing a gaping hole on the passenger ship’s hull that led to its sinking some thirty minutes after the collision.
While around 501 passengers and crew survived, 71 lost their lives, and 26 remain missing.
We will tackle her glorious and illustrious career as the M/V Cebu City and its role in Philippine Shipping before she met her untimely demise. You will learn more information plus fun facts when you be able to finish the video.
Inside the video is a 3D Simulation (of both M/V Cebu City and M/V Kota Suria) and be able to imagine what could have happened during its sinking. So please check it out :)
We at PSSS would like to extend our sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to those who survived this horrendous mishap.

How can i forget the tragedy, I was 5yrs old then but the memories and scenarios are still fresh in my mind. Many people were crying & screaming for help, my aunt and I were one of them. 😥 I can still remember how I prayed "Ginoo, Ginoo(God) tabangi mi, luwasa mi." We were lucky enough to get some help from the people who got lifeboats and survived the tragedy.

Certainly, I can't forget that incident. I was one of the survivors, together with my Bro & his wife. We were at Cabin #5, Starboard side.. that was 38 yrs ago.. we survived by climbing to the Kota Suria. We Prayed so hard asking God to save us, and He did..
Less than 2 minutes upon reaching the bow of KS, Cebu City sunked.. to those who read this, join me in offering prayers to those who perished on this tragedy at sea. 🙏🙏🙏

Remembering my cadet life aboard Mv Cebu City from 1974 to 1976.It was the most luxurious passenger ship at that time where I met my sweetheart and soon become my wife. What a beautiful memories of nightly disco at sea and meet lots of beautiful and friendly cebuanas.Experienced worth remembering for life.Capt.E.G.Sapalaran.

MV Cebu City is dear to my heart. Every time we went to Manila we would always sail in it instead of taking an airplane. The cabins - both regular and suite - were excellent and the crew was very friendly. The sunny-side up eggs during breakfast were immaculately perfect. It almost looked like a plastic reproduction.
The ship actually started cruising at 24 knots but they had to lower it to 19 knots for safety reasons. It is correct that the MV Sweet Faith - which we never took - was its sworn enemy. It was like Coke vs Pepsi or Apple vs Android.
The toddler Nino Mulach was MV Cebu City's TV spokesperson. We actually got to see him shoot scenes with the late comedian Panchito and the future President Erap for a movie over at the back of the ship where the life boats were placed.
As a kid, I personally enjoyed it when the ship passed underneath the original Mactan Bridge. Students that were walking on the bridge sidewalks would throw love notes at us passengers who were standing at the viewing area on top of the ship. The cool sea winds that touch our face was priceless.
I will always miss the MV Cebu City. Thank you for the video.

All of the above comments relate to the 1970s, when I was still a little kid, and was the time that MV Cebu City was in peak form.
Eventually, she was replaced by the Dona Virginia which we also loved. It's suites were the size of hotel suites. One very special moment was when we at the Dona Virginia encountered the MV Cebu City in the high seas. All of us waved at them, and they waved back at us in turn. It felt like a changing of the guard between the two ships.
What ever happened to the Dona Virginia? Does anyone know?

    • @fairedelweiss
      @fairedelweiss Před 3 lety +1

After the WG&A merger, the M/V Doña Virginia was made to sail under its flag for a short period, but in 1997 she was put up for sale along with the other excess ships (e.g. M/V Maynilad, M/V Zamboanga). And sometime during that period, the DV was apparently involved in a grounding incident near Siquijor. It was rumored she was slowly being cannibalized to provide parts for her sister ship the M/V Our Lady of Banneux. By 2001 the DV was already reported as "scrapped".

I think this was the last of the brand-new ships for a very long time until recently when these new shipping lines bought new brand-new ships. I used to be so excited especially when my dad goes to Manila and come home on the MV Cebu City and we have to meet him at the port of Tagbilaran. He used to tell me stories about how magnificent and how fast the ship was and it overtakes a lot of passenger ships along the way. It’s just so sad that she ended up in a very shameful way foundering underneath the sea because of an accident that shouldn’t have happened. This is one of the most nostalgic ships for me including the Doña Virginia and the MS Sweet Heart, which I thought time will come when I get successful I’ll buy Sweetheart and make it my own pleasure boat.

When I was a graduating student ( class 1975 ) at CIT, Cebu city we had a field trip in Manila, all ME , EE graduating students combined we are all 200 plus graduating students boarded M/V Cebu City it was a nice ship brand new, fast, clean and nice foods served in the canteen . Same ship going back to Cebu city. Since the sinking of princes of the stars of sulpicio lines I never tried again to board a ship bound for Cebu I’m afraid anymore. I’ve rather prepared airplane for just one hour trip to Cebu I booked my ticket 3 months advance scheduled flight , so that fare ticket is low or cheaper almost same price of economy ship fare.

a case of crossing situation in COLREGS rule 15. the rule says the vessel which has the other vessel on her own starboard side is the "give-way (burden) vessel" which means this vessel should alter her course to starboard and pass on the stern of kota suria which was the "stand-on (privelege) vessel".

    SURVIVOR AKO:
MV CEBU CITY Tragedy : December 2, 1994
Manila to Ozamis City. . First of all i thank the Lord for He rescued me. I always thank the Lord and i will never forget what the Lord has done habang may buhay. I owe my life so much to the Lord. It's been 28 years had passed, but still can't forget the incident.. I attended the National Social Workers' Convention on that time in Manila. On board of one of the newest , cleanest and fastest ship - MV Cebu City on December 1, 1994 from Manila to Ozamis City. So excited to go home para makahabol sa 1st bday ng daughter namin . While on our way, two hours after we left Port of Manila... malapit lang kami sa coregidor may bumangga namin ng malakas

It was Kuta Soria a singaporean vessel they said. Lahat ng pasahero sa MV- CEBU CITY were panicked, shouting and calling the Lord for help. It was so dark ..automatic black out...and i don't know where to go. Pumasok na ang maraming tubig sa loob ng barko. I was so scared ... but one thing na di ko nakalimutan... i talked and cried to God for help. Gustong gusto pa akong mabuhay

Truly... kung hindi mo pa time to die God will make a way in the most crucial times. The floor was so greasy due to the oil that spread the whole part of it kaya i have to crawl instead of walking in going up the economy . Grabe thanks God i was able to crawl until naabot ko sa deck economy.

But the Lord is so good... He is so gracious .. He hears me... He rescued me. He performs muracle in my life.
And another thing ang lahat ng mga officemates ko sa Calamba -LGU Misamis Occidental have prayed for my safety on that Day December 2 , 1994. Until now this story and testimony was shared to our children at hinding hindi maaring makalimutan habang may buhay. THANKS GOD
