- Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the 'Skye-Lifers' depart from Inverness on an unexpected adventure to test drive our dream car. Will it live up to a lifetime of expectations or will it turn into a nightmare..?
At least there's an awe-inspiring castle to visit while we are there, which keeps Sarah happy.
Plus - see how Sarah got on with packaging and posting over 250 orders for calendars and Christmas cards!!

Hello Sarah, Willie and Jack, ..... I'm being a bit curious (Nosy), but I noticed neither of you wear wedding rings, Are you married and if not then "Come on Willie!!" Make Sarah your wife! LOL!! Enjoying the videos of you 3!! xx ❤
What sets this apart from most of the YT channels I watch is that you both seem to be genuinely nice people. Really enjoy being a little bit involved in your lives. Thank you.
Aww thanks so much! That means a lot to us 😊
If you weren't a mechanic prior, then a defender will certainly turn you into one 😂 best wishes with it, they are fantastic cars to run and spanner on.
When I was a child in Scotland, we drilled holes through the conkers, passed a string through, tied a knot on the end, and played a game. It involved swinging the conker to hit your opponent's thus trying to break it apart. The child with the whole conker at the end was, of course, the winner.
We did exactly the same, living only in England, so I don’t think it was specific to Scotland, was it? In fact Norwich in East Anglia got themselves quite a lot of (poor) press a couple of years ago by cutting out all the conkers from an avenue of trees in case children injured themselves playing conkers as you describe. Health and Safety? - or Nanny State? You decide.
I played that too but in England (east end London) ❤
Yes everyone did this. The game was called ‘Conkers’
Yes, we played conkers in Wales. One that was a winner here was called a Peggy Oner, and so on. If your peggy-oner trashed a peggy-threer then yours became a peggy-fourer. Our chestnut trees were on the drive to the manor. I got shouted out of there a few times. We used shoe laces for the strings, they were easier to push through the hole in your conker, the only trouble was one of your shoes would fall off! Loads of old wives tales about hardening them, from pickling in vinegar to baking in the oven.
I so remember playing that game with the conkers!
Keep the alloys as summer tires and fit winter ones to the original rims. Some heat on the step will budge it. Enjoy 🙂
When Sarah said you might end up sleeping in the back of the Land Rover it brought back some wonderful childhood memories. A Land Rover Defender was the first car I remember as my parents had one for years. We lived in Derbyshire and for most holidays we went camping in Cornwall. My dad would load up the landy with all our gear, and the tent, etc and then put our sleeping bags and pillows on the top. We always travelled down overnight to avoid crowds. My sister and I slept snug as bugs in the back and woke up in beautiful Cornwall. Happy days! Have fun with the car. Your channel is a breath of fresh air.
I bet the PO is loving you , keeping them open and working. It is great that you are supporting the community facilities.
Aparapently, according to my partner, don't angle grind the rims. You'll muck up the balance of the wheels. Wire wool it. He makes wheels for a living.
Wow a Landy, how very 'country' of you! Great car to have where you are. Sarah well done on getting 280 orders packaged and sent, what a big job. ❤
I adore you guys. You epitomize childlike wonder. Between Sarah's foraging and Willie's giddiness with the new car. . . just brings a smile to my face. As always, thanks for sharing a small piece of your paradise with us all! 💚
Sarah is a girl after my ❤️ heart for sure with your love of castles!! My dream is to go to Scotland always has been .. I am so grateful here in Maine for your little family and that you share your life on Skye with us!! Magical!! 😊😊😊❤❤❤
GO! But beware- It just might steal your heart. You will see so many castles, you'll start to get overwhelmed by the number of them! We went in 2019 and spent two weeks in August doing "Highlands and Islands" on a loop from Glasgow to Edinburgh, Inverness, John O Groats, Orkney, Skye, Mull, Iona, Loch Lomond and back to Glasgow. Fantastic tour, and I did not want to go home! There was still so much we DID NOT see, I could go back at least 100 more times. Make your dreams come true however you can- you wont regret it.
Hi Guys, great to see you with a 90. Having owned literally hundreds of Land Rovers over the years the best treatment for the chassis is to strip off any sealant/rust then drill the chassis and spray it inside and outside with Waxoyl …. It’s clear, but you can buy it in black too for a finishing coat. It is a messy job, but so worthwhile if you intend keeping it. Hope you have many happy times in it 🙂
100% this. I remember a Series 3 lwb folded in half at Craignure. Didn’t move for months.
Safe driving folks ....remember a harness for Jack Spanials in the minor refit you're doing Willie. ❤❤
So Willy hasn't learnt from the boat 🤦♂️😂 For the steps, just cut the nuts off where it pivots (remove any springs if it's spring loaded), use a punch to hammer the old bolts out, free the step and use new bolts 🤷♂️ Very easy job. Sadly, defenders are a mix of aluminium and steel which teact and rot each other, so there will be more maintenance down the road 😬 I've not managed to sell a single intaglio print yet, so I am slightly envious of Sarah 😂 I do think defenders look 1000x better with the original steel wheels!
Looks like an essential kind of vehicle for where you live!! So glad you have so many orders Sarah!😊
If you can get a towball fitted to the front bumper and make sure it's slightly offset of center. It's far easier to launch and retrieve the boat when you can see it in front of you.
A very good suggestion! Thanks
Awesome 💡idea!!💡
I'm rereading my favourite books by Lillian Beckwith about her time in the Hebrides. How times have changed ❤
Sunday greetings to all for our weekly get together following the adventures of willie, sarah and jack spaniels ❤. Happy motoring willie. Next you will be applying for jobs as a ghillie and thundering over the glens 😁. I really envy your talent sarah. I dabble poorly in watercolour but really enjoy it for the internal peace you get when engrossed in a piece that is going well. Hope you all have a good week x
Wow, awesome buy on the Land Rover. Awesome to Richard as a friend, in so May ways. Well done Sarah. You pushed and got the orders out. I bet you are glad that is done. Hugs to both of you.
Really jealous about the Landy, it looks great and so practical. We'll done Sarah for getting all your stock out, what a mammoth task
Now Willie has his boat and car i think its Sarahs turn. Come on Willie do the right thing, buy her a castle ......
😂😂😂 yassss
Congrats on your new vehicle Willie, hope it runs well for you. Sarah, amazing to hear you had so many orders, well deserved.
Congrats on both the new car AND all the orders! That castle was beautiful! What great architecture, especially the top floor 'windows'. Hope you make another trip when it is open to get a good look inside!
My dad has had a few Defenders, great cars, but not for everyone. Not really comfortable for long term driving, very hard gears (one of the big reasons we sold it, as it got harder with age) and we found it rather impractical to carry anything. Granted we had 90's and not 110's, but shopping always ended up all over the back unless we put it on the benches with seatbelts. That being said, they are very reliable due to their simple engine's, and can tackle anything offroad no problem. Dont let me stop you or put you off! Just wanted to chip in my 2 cents!
Thanks. I’ve already installed factory made cargo compartments above the wheel arches, so that you can store luggage etc much easier. All coming in a future episode. 🙂
Congratulations on the Landy, there'll be plenty of great content from tweaking with that over the coming years
Making your calendar has been a job well done. 23 years ago I made a calendar with beautiful photos of the small Canadian town where we were living...but once was enough.
Glad it was a successful venture for you.
Lovely you bought the Landrover as it will be just the thing for the roads around Skye and I am looking forward to see you do up the bits that need attention. Hi to Richard who I know is going to help you inn this quest. I so love the bloopers still and all the video esapeciallky the castle bit but what a shame it was closed on the day you were there, It looks amazing and I hope you get to see the inside one day. Stay safe you three and see you next week.♥
Congratulations on getting the Landy. Ideal vehicle for winters on Skye. As someone has already suggested a winch on the front will be great for hauling your boat out of the water. You'll also be able to move any fallen trees that might be blocking the road! In 2009 I bought an early Discovery (3 door model which weren't made for long) and it was great. I had intended to drive it to Romania when I moved here in 2010 but unfortunately the gearbox broke and although I sourced a replacement from a LR breakers, I didn't get round to fitting it for various reasons. At least I managed to sell it to a LR enthusiast who worked for a local garage.
Sarah your a little dynamo dear you never stop ❤
As a child in Pittsburgh, PA, in the 50's, every fall school day, I would get off the bus, collect the green balls of horse chestnuts (they looked like green oranges), peel them, and lug them back home ... I loved their shine and the sleek way they felt when slipping through my fingers! ...And yes, I was born at the dawn of time! 😃
Congrats on the Landy. The color is perfect for your cottage life and all of your adventures. And another congrats on your successful calendar. Well done.
A Landrover to be a reliable car? Good luck. You know what the Australians say - 'if you want to go in to the Outback take a Landrover............if you want to come back again take a Toyota' 🤣
Brilliant video...Congratulations Willie on your new Land Rover, just perfect for your roads...well done Sarah on getting all your orders posted...Good to see a clip of the Skye legend Richard and a big woof to Jack Spaniels....Best wishes
I've got a spare very cool steering wheel for one of those, if you ever want it for mates rates, transforms it.
The firewall, between the engine bay and dashboard is known to rust, so I'd keep an eye out for that.👍
The last time I bought a car I actually went out to buy wall tiles but the shop was shut so I came home with a VW Polo You’re not alone 😂
Just as i thought your channel couldn't get any better, yiu go and buy a landy! Legends! Love it ❤️
Happy driving. The best sort of car for where you live . It gives you peace of mind . Great video. 🐱 X
Willie get rid of the side steps they're a waste of time when they're old, if you have to take the LR off road they'll probably get torn off and do loads of damage to the chassis. Always make sure that the right oils are in the transfer and gearboxes and that they're topped up. Enjoy your LR the best off road there is. Birthday pressie to yourself? Neil
Wish you loads of fun times with the Landy ... many many safe roads trips - God bless 😊
Brilliant to have such a classic p vehicle, I am not a mechanic but I am a metallurgist/materials engineer - The sooner you deal with the rust the better - especially wire brushing that step or something soon 'might' salvage it but don' t leave it, its an original piece and would be a shame to lose it . Which ever way you treat the rust it is still pernicious. Good luck !
YaY congratulations, so nice to share in your joy at buying a dream car. 😊
Love your LandRover and I love my calendar, it arrived safely ~ thank you, Sarah! 😍
Love it , I remember posting on another video saying , all you need is a Land Rover......❤
Love mine , although mine is 47 year old.....
I have to say that, a couple times a year, a McDonald's bacon, cheese, and egg biscuit, hash browns, and an O.J. is a tasty way to start the day.
The castle is very cool. It's too bad it was closed. I would have enjoyed seeing it. Something to look forward to another time.
Congratulations on buying your "new" car. I guess it's kind of like buying a Jeep or Ford Bronco in the U.S. A utility vehicle is a must for places with rough roads. I live in town, but come winter I admit I wouldn't mind having a similar vehicle.
Castles, roadtrips, Jack Spaniels, adventures, and new transportation. Life is good! 💜🌻
Like the new wheels it's nice having a good friend like Richard. It's better to be safe than sorry when the bad weather arrives x
Did you plant a couple of conkers so you can have your own trees? Really easy to do - just push into a pot of compost, label, snd leave outside over winter, will sprout in spring if not before :)
We put roasted chestnuts in stuffing, dressing for turkey, chicken, poultry. ❤
They are probably sweet chestnuts, not horse chestnuts - as these ones are toxic!
Conkers are poisonous so I guess you mean roasted sweet chestnuts?
In the beginning there was DSOS and SWSP. Both a bit shy. You turned into the best entertainment online
That foraging instinct is strong with you! Loved watching you collect conkers! Willie looks dead chuffed with his new vehicle. I didn’t get Jack’s special message card, but I’m sure I saw my actual card in amongst all those others 🤣. Looks like you got some lovely days there in mid to late October. Cheers and ATB
Congratulations on the Land Rover! It is perfect for Skye Life! Enjoyed this video as always....
Willie, I understand your "Sarah the Conqueror" and your subtle reference to historical nod to Guillaume! 🤩
Now you've bought a Defender, we'll be seeing loads more of Richard 🔧 🤟
It's an excellent choice to have the Land Rover for Skye's terrain and it should keep you safe during the Winter months. I always smirk when I see the same vehicles driving around London's roads, although some of our potholes are a match for those on Skye! Seeing Sarah collecting conkers brought back happy memories of my childhood...Best wishes, Sue.
Put a tow ball on your new front bumper, passenger side. Will make launching the boat a lot easier.
I have been following the tragedy that is Gaza and feeling pretty low. Your blog, your peaceful life., the wonderful scenery all away from the madding crowd is the perfect antidote. So thank you and happy birthday Willie. That land rover will be very heavy on fuel but am sure you factored this into your decision to buy.
Yes, there’s a lot of nastiness going on in the world right now.
If the channel feels like an antidote to this, then that can only be a good thing.
As for the fuel, surprisingly it doesn’t use even half of the fuel of the previous car. It is way more economical than we had thought.
@@livingtheskyelifethat's a relief to hear. I always thought Landrovers are terrible gas gobblers. Do understand though that you need a car to match the terrain.
@@rdb4996 if you live in the US you could be forgiven for thinking this as in your market they were supplied with 3.5 to 4.5 litre petrol engines. This one has a 2.2 litre turbo diesel so 30 mpg would be a possibility.
Congrats on your Land Rover purchase! So many of the books I have read that are set in 1960s-1970s Scotish countryside feature Land Rovers, that they became one of my dream vehicles. It seems there is adventure whereever you find one. Also, Sarah, like you I think conkers are beautiful and can never resist filling my pockets when I find some .
Well done Sarah amazing what a team of 2 can do. Good luck with the land rover renovation 😊❤
A busy video! With rusty parts that should move and don’t, heat and oil are your friends. If penetrating oil doesn’t free it up on its own, a small gas blowtorch on the pivots will often do the trick. But rust is the enemy on a Land Rover, working away beneath that aluminium body! Best of luck with it, you will find lots of work to do on it, especially in a salt-water environment.
Cant wait to see the restoration , Jack loves it always a good sign . Love your adventures .
We call them chestnuts too here in New York State - “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”
Ah those will be sweet chestnuts though - horse chestnuts are toxic so can’t be eaten 😊
Yay Willie for liking MacDonalds.its my guilty pleasure too !!! Hi Sarah and Jack Spaniels. Have a great day !!!!!
Congrats on your Disco. You will become a mechanic budget generously for spares. Hope your spares always match your Disco. Love you guys.
Strange looking Disco ?
I enjoyed seeing Gordon castle. I wish you could have gone inside.
Get a bit of heat on the step pivot area they will free off it looks great. Great video as always.
I've been with you since the beginning of DSOS. You are truly ambitious, hardworking people. As a retired tobacco/cattle farmer here in Kentucky cringing over your vehicle since your move and so glad about the Landover. I remember Sarah's first days on camera and you have become a natural and so talented, both of you. Richard is a great mentor; I was lucky to have a mentor too as a woman in farming. It is so truly beautiful there.as an aside, my father's name was Robert Forbes Stevens, grandfather Nelson Forbes Stevens, I believe from that area around Cullen/Plitsby. Don't worry, I'm not one of those Americans chasing the tartan lol. But i think its where the they make The Glenlivet? Now that I chased for many a year! I have cancer now and don't drink - but ther is a bottle of that 12 yr old deliciousness still in my house. You never know! I also have 2 tuxedo cats named Jack and Daniel after one of our favorite sons of whiskey. You are best thing on you tube. Slainte!
Thanks so much! It’s always so nice to see folks who have been with us since the start still enjoying our journey 😊
Hi guys. Love the addition of a Land Rover. Makes 100% sense. You will benefit no end through the winter and with the boat throughout the year. Stay safe
I just started the video and I’m so excited for it because I hop you get the landy William I love them I’ve had four, I grew up working on landys from a 8 year old, so fantastic news mate 👍👍👍 back to the vid
How exciting and wonderful. Congrats on your new car. You deserve it. Great to see you two so happy and fulfilling your dreams.❤
We call them horse chestnuts in the states, I've never heard the name buckeye.
Apparently Ohio is the Buckeye State.?
LOVE your new car guys! My Dad had an old grey land rover, in the late 60s, with long type seats on either side of the back, and he used it to ferry us to horse shows, as both my Father and I entered them, him on his horse, and me on my pony, and you could fit quite a few folk in the back! Love Land Rovers. Friday the 13th was a lucky day for you guys, on getting your new addition to the family! xxx
Glad you said Muck Donald's. Sounded like it and its true. 😁
Where's Willie? Why he's in his new office aka the Land Rover.😊 Such joy on his face. You two needed a more reliable, safe vehicle for the country drives...good on ya! Great video....love your adventures. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You needed a more suitable vehicle with winter coming up, not much choice on Skye either lol
Hi to you lovely couple Sarah & Willie plus sweet wee jack.
Just love the Land Rover Willie 👍we don’t drive but I always love land rovers & I hope you enjoy driving it around Isle of Skye good choice . Look forward to seeing you driving wee jack to the lake on your next avenger . Have fun till next week in living the Skye of life 🥰💖🐶🏴
I've driven a landy Defender 110 for the last 5 years and its totally the BEST car i've ever had ...... welcome to the Landy Club lol
Hats off to you pair, I was planning a sail next year to Skye at the start of this year and stumbled upon your channel….. dozens of videos later I’m hooked. Particularly love the boat content but also love the old Defender and wanted to thank you guys for the entertainment (and informative content)…. Who knows I might sail up your Loch next year 👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching our videos - glad you’re enjoying them! Our Loch is a wee bit shallow, but Loch Harport would be amazing to sail into - you get a great view of the Cuillin mountains and you can berth at the pier there too 😊👍
Nice to see you got proper a car heat is the best for a landy
Another great video guys! If you added Land Rover Defender in the title I reckon you would get thousands more views 👍👍😎
Fixing up the Landy is gonna make good vlog content. Proper Isle of Skye vehicle. Well done!
Heartwarming episode. Looking forward to the Rover saga and the conkers detergent.😀😀
Congrats to Willie about the new car. Nice birthday present he made himself😂
I can relate to having that kind of car. It is super cool, but keep in mind that proper winter tires can make a huge difference on most type of cars in your environment. A 4x4 on summer tires is worse than a fiesta on winter tires on narrow roads. Obviously on muddy fields you want the ground clearance.
Put some all season, all terrain tyres on her now. The alloy wheels have been sold too.
liquid wrench might work better than 3-in-1, but if you have a mapp or propane torch, you should be able to free up that step hinge with minimal effort. Just get it good and hot (on both sides, preferably, but you can get it loose one side at a time if you must) and give it a light whack and it should pop loose.
Another great video, really enjoy your posts, the Landy is perfect for your location, you may have a few challenges ahead but I am sure with your skills and knowledge you will get a vehicle you are really happy with....looking forward to the next video and the progress on the Landy........
Landy looks great ! so pleased for you. just the job for where you live now. Well done Sarah getting all them posted off in time.
A very sensible car choice. It looks in half decent nick, really!
Happy Birthday Willie! N&Nx
Sarah, you are impressively productive!!!
This again was a most enjoyable video.
Willie looked boyish in his delight about purchasing the vehicle.
Such a nice experience too be part of.
Great fun as usual. Thank You.
Cheers.❤
Willie is like jack..FULL of energy ( be wagging a tail FULL speed if he had 1 like jack!) A bit older than he looks til the beard gave it all away. Ha ha And he loves his toys!! Just way more expensive than a stick or a block of wood. Boat ,tackle of all sorts, metal detectors, ginger bottles , display shelves, guitars, LANDY etc etc 🤣
Congratulations on the new addition to the family and all of the orders out!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
And you two are very punny! 😍😍😍
Good video Love to jack spaniels 👍👏👋😘
Another video to enjoy. It’s something I look forward to every week 😊 Nice to see Willie get his “dream” car. Sarah will have to show us what she does with all those conkers!
That's kinda weird, I was watching one of your older videos, a couple of days ago, and I thought "those guys need a Landrover"😅. Congratulations, and thank you for all your brilliant videos. Greetings from Denmark.
Congrats on the car!
Well congrats on the new ride. Looks much better suited. I'm so loving your Christmas cards. I'm hoping they'll be some left. Id love to frame them for a Christmas art wall. You guys are so much fun to watch. I always look forward to it. And so does my dog Motley, the King Charles Spaniel. He runs and barks, wags his tail and tries to play with Jack Spaniels. It's always an energizing watch here. All the best from Colorado USA
Hi from Canada. Got my calendar this week...beautiful...but no note from Jack, but appre iated the note from you.. Cheers!
Congratulations on buying your new car, definitely a good one for where you’re living. Take care and thank you for sharing 👏🙏❤️
Many years ago we had a short wheel base 1958 Landrover for taking our sons small track byke over the forest where there was a track for him to ride it on. It was a very bumpy ride but it also towed my hubby's big furniture orry that he drove when it would'nt start. Me driving the landy and he in the lorry. They are tough vehicles and I hope yours is suitable for the things you do. x
Sarah, the Maggot in Nairn is a flat area near the harbour where once there was an area of brackish pools. There are two versions of why it is called "the maggot". One is that it is from the Gaelic "achad", meaning a field (like Achnasheen, Achnashellach etc). Alternatively. the story goes that the local fishermen used to throw the fish heads, guts etc into the brackish pools for later use as bait for their lines and creels. These brackish pool are often strong smelling and maggot-ridden - even before you add in rotting fish... Of course it is all now sanitised to a car park, golf course and holiday park and the truth behind the name is long lost.
Thanks for sharing this history...too much has fallen to the wayside that I feel needs to be passed down to generations to come! Thanks again! So interesting!
Thanks for the info! We would rather go with the first option being true though haha 😅
That defender is amazing! My first thought when seeing it was "Oh, this will be so useful when Willie goes metal detecting in some random field again". This, coupled with the lovely trip to the castle makes me wonder if you are planning to update your individual channels again in the future. I'm still working my way through both of them, but I'm enjoying them a lot. It's no surprise you haven't had time with the move and all the things you've had going on, but it would be lovely to see more walking and painting and bottle digging, too!
Congrats again on the awesome car and on getting all these preorders sorted and sent out!
I have been watching you since she walks she paints, every time I hear the music it makes me feel happy!!
