I like the fact he plays what he wants & doesn't pander to what people expect,I personally don't mind it.

I usually don't like his Pop-Experiments much. But this one i loved instantly. It's catchy in a good way. I only wish it was longer ;)

The Melodies go insane on this. There's a part where the ringing reverb from the guitar and keys make a "wub wub" sound that is just so nicccce

  • @nicolemelineilliannasimons8272

The Future Bites is a very amazing album when listened to repeatedly. My favorites are King Ghost and Count of Unease 😊

Nice poppy song. I really liked the ending.

One thing I respect about SW is the fact that he doesn’t let others define him. He doesn’t want to be put in a “musical genre”. I dislike the bands that churn out the same album over and over and over……

I saw him perform this track live in a small venue in Calgary and it was awesome. It's his homage to ABBA and, like it or not, it works ;)

I'm a hard core prog guy, but even I like this one.

I'm not surprised you liked that, Justin. And I think you absolutely nailed it -- Steven hit 50 in 2017, and I have a feeling he must have thought "If I'm going to actually get any commercial success I better get on with it." Plus I think this is around the time he married and adopted his daughter, so maybe he was feeling some pressure to make better money than he had been as a cult prog guy? I dunno.
I do know he'd been telling audiences for years about how much of an Abba fan he was, and this is when he finally started really putting that into his music. He'd been a good songwriter all along, so I'm not surprised he could pull something like this off. I think "Permanating" did chart, but it wasn't the smash hit he was hoping for. He sort of doubled down on the next album, The Future Bites, which was crushed by Covid so nobody really knows what kind of impact that one might have had. We're now all looking forward to the next one which is due sometime soon. If you liked this I urge you to check out his side project Blackfield with Israeli pop artist Aviv Geffen. They're more in the intelligent pop/art-pop vein.

I dont think he wrote this with the slightest intention or desire to strive for commercial success. If you listen to any of his interviews over the years - no matter what he has been writing - he has consistently expressed that anyone who allows that motivation to direct what or how they write has effectively forfeited their right to be called an artist. He writes what he wants when he wants for noone else but to challenge himself.
More power to him I say :-)

Just discovered SW (and porcupine tree) not too long ago. Reminds me of other Prog bands that came out with more pop songs later in their careers, and got torched by their longtime fans. But those songs made those bands more popular. And some of those new fans will check out his other work. That’s just how it goes. And it’s not only limited to Prog, other sub, genres, apply as well. Gwen Stefani comes to mind as an example.

Yeah I'm scratching my head at this moment. What the hell is this? 😂 I guess he was trying to hit the mainstream, even though (or because of that?) he's phenomenal

Many say that their last is not good. But I believe THE FUTURE BITES is a good work made during the pandemic ... Very eletrônic, right. But a good masterpiece in my opinion 👌🏼

Lovin' the reaction Justin and so refreshing to see a descerning listener get what SW is doing here in reinventing himself yet again. If you would like to explore even more recent solo stuff that I have come to think is even better, try King Ghost (official video) or Self (official video) both from his most recent release The Future Bites. I think truly excellent, exploratory, innovative compositions with a lot to say.
Keep up the great, positive, upbeat reviews!

Hahahaha! For long time fans of SW, anything that has an uplifting sound or seeing him smile was unheard of. So yes, long time fans were like WTF?!!
As for the style, he has a podcast he does about vinyl (records) and he goes on and on about pop music. Even calls the Beatles pop. He loves Abba. He produced pop albums and other stuff. It was just strange to hear him actually play it.
Those that liked it early on said “this is what pop music should be”. The rest of this album is very good. You might actually like it better than hand cannot erase as it’s more accessible but still has moments of his traditional style.
And yes, I guess my request backfired. Maybe I’ll throw some Future Bites songs your way. Other than the extras which were not on the original album, there is not much on it I like. It is more electronic in nature. Although he does have Elton John on it.

I gotta say, the guy that wrote in with the song sounds entitled as hell. While not outright saying it,he's implying that when an artist does not make music that he personally likes then they're "losing it" or "selling out". That guy needs to learn that an artist can make whatever they want and sometimes that involves changing their style or experimenting. Hell, my favorite artist has like 6 different projects of vastly differing styles and I love that. It shows hes versatile and just cares about making the music, not adhering to a certain style or expectations.

Not my cup of tea but Steven likes to challenge himself. I think he just wanted to show himself he could write a chart-topping pop song. If one of the Beatles wrote this people (maybe not PT fans) would say it's not a bad pop song.
