How crazy is it that arguably three of the greatest drummers of all time, Craig Blundell, Gavin Harrison and Marco Minnemann, are all Steven Wilson collaborators... perfect perfect perfect
YUP
And Chris Maitland!!! He set the ground work for so much Porcupine Tree and deserves more recognition than he gets!
Have been fortunate to experience all three (MM twice with Wilson, first on the Raven Tour), Blundell three times with Wilson, twice with Hackett, and Harrison twice with KC, and PT on the latest tour. A great time to (still) be alive.
WOW! This is truly stunning.
I'm a new fan of Steven Wilson and relatively new to Craig Blundell. Phenomenal drummer!!!
To answers your gear question, I believe Craig IS endorsed by Aquarian drumheads, so it would be a Hi-Energy snare batter
I saw him on the Hand. Cannot.Erase tour in 2016. I was really disappointed that it wasn't Marco Minnemann. At the end of the concert, I was truly thankful I got to watch and be introduced to a phenomenal drummer I had never heard of.
Same
Same
I was the same way although, moreso with Govan. After watching Craig I was like.....Marco who. Obviously, Marco is in the pantheon of the best drummers alive. I was just smiling ear to ear. As a bassist I will spend whole concerts zoning in on just the drummers if the are at this level. Btw, Nicki is a beast and one of the funniest and nicest people alive.
When you compose the type of music that Steven Wilson has/does, everyone that performs with him has to match that level, and the list of drummers he has had working with him is nothing short of otherworldly with the likes of Marco, Gavin, & Blundell(.) 🤘🏼
and I am lucky enough to have seen them all. Multiple times.
And Maitland
Nice for Craig to get recognition.During the TTB tour, some SW/PT fans often downplayed his skills because he wasn't Marco or Gavin.
Gavin Harrison, cut from the same cloth. That 13 minute journey was a communal musical eargasm at RAH. Wilson, a seemingly peaceful man and his squad, inevitably speak gently at first, and then declare a precise, jaw dropping, technically chaotic musical war. 😵💫😳The most dynamic musician in the last twenty years with PT, he has changed me. Everyone with whom I speak to, hears some PT and is changed also. Thank God for Real music! Thanks Andrew and your supporters. BTW, I can't pick up my 7A's anymore. Thanks Gavin! Oh another thing..., get some Marc Bonilla with Thomas Lang "Dragon Choir" live, Uuuwee!
Steven Wilson is a genius and this incarnation of the band is legend.
Craig and Alex's interpretations of their parts was incredible on that tour!
Craig Blundell sure is as good as you get. What amazes me iis his ability to drop into any band. Hes also in *Frost i saw them in Bath in Nov 2022. Jem Godfrey had delayed the original covid hit tour as he wanted Craig on drums, and he had just been on tour with Steve Hackett. He was simply phenomenal. Check out the "Island Live'' BluRay of *Frost at gig i attended.
I love to see that now after 10 months there are almost 10k views on this great drum reaction video that I requested and a lot seems to have missed this. How I love the whole concert… Even after watching it several times already it’s still mind blowing. Thanks to you for this review Andrew!
I was at that gig at the Royal Albert Hall - very special.... I also went to the previous night and it was so good on getting home, I checked to see if there were tickets available to the gig the next day and there were. The whole band were brilliant..... Looks like you are entering the proper halls of music mixing in the likes of Craig with Gavin Harrison and Ian Paice and Bill Ward.... Any watchers that haven't seen Porcupine Tree should go and watch some videos now......... You won't regret it if you liked the performance on this video! 🎶
The best live experience by far me. I was at third row 😊
So many highlights from that night. The venue is also superb with amazing acoustics
Saw him a couple times with Steven Wilson. Incredible drummer. Wanted to see him with David Cross
Such a brilliant player
Blundell's combination of speed, accuracy, and dynamics are impressive.
Funny that you bring up Miles Davis. The keyboardist in this video, Adam Holzman, was in Miles' band in the mid-late 80s.
Oh wow!
I saw Steven Wilson back in 2018 here in Melbourne with this band and Craig was absolutely amazing. I walked out of the venue thinking what have I just seen ? The musicianship was through the roof. A concert that I will remember for a long time.
Superb reaction... Love hearing a players perspective of who my ears tell me is all time great. coincidentally enought, you said that the venue looked great... Steven Wilosn just today dropped a short standing outside The Albert Hall and commenting on how he thinks that it is favourite venue to play. Just from memory he said he had played their once with Porcupine tree and 6 times as a solo artist. I'm one of these old gits who remember the Beatles whe they were fresh faced mop tops and i found it stunning that I only discovered Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree 3 years ago.. Since then I have become an addict for his superb music. Thank you once again for the reaction... Kepp on Rocking.
So incredible. Love seeing Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree here.
Unreal!
I saw him live in France 2 times during Steven Wilson's "To The Bone" tour ... amazing shows.
Craig is currently listed as a member of FROST*. "Falling Satellites" album is a great place to start with them...
I need to check them out!
I didn't know that. Cool stuff. I only have one album of theirs.
Phenomenal player, and incredibly underrated. 😊
Most will skip this vid!
WHAT A MONSTER
Wow, never heard of Steven Wilson or Craig Blundell before. Thanks for reviewing this!
YUP!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums you must listen to the stuff Guthrie Govan did with Wilson, especially the concept album he did about a woman found dead in London YEARS after she'd died.
Wilson has a deep rabbit hole to discover. Check out not only his solo work but also Porcupine Tree and Blackfield.
This song is from that album, "Hand cannot erase"@@richardharrold9736
This is one of the best live albums ever.
Was lucky to be there on the third row 😊
Great Drummer.❤
Drummers at this level can play anything so it boils down to if you
like their choices or not.
I wonder how Baard Kolstad would have approach this.
Truly world class playing
Watching from India..I had seen SW live in Shillong few years back..Phenomenal gig
I bet!!!
Really cool song. Great performance from everyone. Adding this album to my prog playlist.
GREAT!
Had the chance to watch this tour here in São Paulo, Brazil. What an amazing gig! One of the best I've ever been!
Nick Beegs plays bass for him?! Wow!
Amazing the drummers that Wilson works with.
Knows his drummers!!!
a Steven Wilson gig or a Porcupine Tree gig means seeing and listening to the best musicians around
Pretty much!
Funny he starts talking about Miles. Wonder if he knows Adam played with him for years.
Hard to step into the MInnemann (or Wackerman) seat, but Blundell is a great player. Spot on, Andrew. A couple of beats and you know the level of the drumming.
Yup it's instantly recognizable. Masterful
I was at this concert and this song performance in particular was an absolutely magical and surreal experience. Craig Blundell made this song his own since the original studio track was performed by Marco Minnemann, and he blew my damn mind.
Thanks for the Upload Andrew. first introduction to Craig.
GREAT
Great video and reaction ! I had the chance to see him play this live in Paris, the whole concert was one the best I ever seen. Craig is a beast, the most underated drummer and he seems to be a very humble person.
I'm. Good not. That. Good
Bundle of Claig - great band name!
Great song request too - enjoyed that a lot :)
Have been fortunate to see Craig a few times with Wilson. One of my personal favs from the Albert Hall show is Home Invasion/Regret nr 9 (particularly Regret)… just saw you have a reaction to a version of that but have not seen it yet.
I also saw him with Hackett on the Seconds Out revisited tour and just this past nov on the Foxtrot at 50 tour. I dare say his drumming was even more impressive with Hackett (his solo leading into Los Endos just fantastic). Was also very pleased to get to see Supers Ready twice with Hackett. I also got to experience it in 82 with Genesis (they played it in its entirety due to 10 year anniversary iirc).
PHENOMENAL player
Nice piece. Craig has amazing hands.
Sure does!
I have seen him play with Steven Wilson a couple of times,he is an exceptional drummer.
Best I've seen live.
End of!
If you like Blunders' drumming, I urge you to check out some Frost*, maybe some of the Rockfield Sessions 'live in the studio' stuff like Milliontown or Black Light Machine.
brilliant no idea what genre you call that but they were all great and when i looked up steven Wilson wiki has him as the most successful British artist you never heard of lol
HA! That's a great description!
I saw Craig play drums with Steve Hackett in Auckland a few years back. He was very good, especially with the Genesis set.
Yeah he was brilliant
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I also saw him with Tim Bowness when they supported Marillion back in the UK in 2017
Blundel is an awesome drummer, on the same level with every other drummer Wilson has chosen to record/tour with. On a side note, the sound of that gig in THAT particular venue, was absolutely AWESOME
RAH is like no other venue. I flew from the US to see a show there and it was the most memorable place ever.
Theres is some strong King Crimson influence there. Beautiful song!
Funny that Porcupine Tree's drummer now plays for KC. Wilson seems to attract phenomenal drummers.
Yup stunning song
I was there (all 3 nights!)
WOW!
Ancestral was totally awesome live, especially from minute 8 (of the album version) til the end🤘🔥🔥and Craig Blundell‘s definitely the best!!!
trivia note, since you mentioned Miles -- the keyboardist here, Adam Holzman (who's been working with Wilson since 2011) was in Miles's band for 4 years, including a long stint as music director.
Drummer. On. Fire
Awesome choice AR - highly recommend Vermillion Core from the same concert. Funny you should mention Miles Davis in connection with this band as the keyboard player here - Adam Holzman - was Miles Davis keyboardist and musical director for most of the 80's. To confirm what you have now already seen of the level of genius of the players here. To see him cut loose, try the 2nd half of Detonation from this same concert..... Mind. Blown once again, not just by Adam, but by the whole band.....
Mindblowing, had to take a few minutes to digest that one, thanks for the video.
He also plays with Frost and Steve Hackett.
Yup I saw him with Steve Hackett
What a great song. Craig is one of the greatest drummers, why do you think Steve Hackett has him in his band? Steven Wilson certainly knows how to pick drummers!
One of the best songs I ever heard.
Everything SW touches is genius, check out Porcupine Tree also
It's great to see this live. But I miss Theo's contribution to the song...And the original guitar solo is my all time favorite.
But about Craig, I love his take on the songs he played with Steven Wilson. He surely didn't deserve all the hate when he and Dave Kilminsters stepped in. His work with Frost* is also amazing!
How did I miss this!!??
Get in there Nate!! 👀
Sounds Great!! Also another icon along side of him to keep the bed track going!? Nick Beggs founder of Kajagoogoo
Great stuff all around.
Just want to point out that there's something unusual going on in the song about halfway (13 min into this video) through which you (understandably) didn't mention. That is that the speed of the long riff that repeats is going up very slightly each bar. It's on the album and on this performance (which I assume was played to a click). So amid all the complexity, he's also navigating a constant change in tempo.
I know - as a bassist/guitarist I know full well that most drummers don't struggle to get faster when playing fills. But I think there's something very impressive about being so locked in as things get faster.
So true. Many drummers I play with will inevitably play a fill and inevitably they speed up every time. Bit of a sore point for me. Shows a lack of practice and time on the kit.
Best band of sw was with MM and GG, killer lineup.
when i saw steven wilson live i was a bit upset that gavin harrison wasn't there, but i couldn't complain because it was really good.
Incidentally when the guitar solo was originally recorded, Guthrie Govan did it in one take
Of course he did. LOL
As in, the one used, was his first improvised solo @@AndrewRooneyDrums
Awesome that you got some more Blundell on the channel! And I second the other suggestions of checking out FROST*, one of my favourite bands!
On another note, can you please adjust your recording process to get rid of all these cracks/pop/stutters? They unfortunately make it really hard to enjoy the music and the playing when listening through good headphones.
If I had to chose a single Miles Davis track out of his entire catalogue, to take to a desert island, it would be Nefertiti
Please react to more Steven wilson or gavin Harrison please!!
Awsome. Guitar player
How do you think Craig stacks up against Marco Minnemann? They're both super scary.
I haven't seen enough of Marco. But Craig is out of this world good
Craig may have been the most pre-judged drummer in history, unfairly so. Even more than Mangini taking Portnoys chair
Yes! Difficult chair
Have seen Steven Wilson a bunch of time. Just saw Steven Wilson with Porcupine tree in Schwetzingen, Germany, but with Gavin Harrison on drums. Great show!
Rooney motto this day: It's 5 o'clock somewhere
I’d say that the sound of Steven’s music here is more English, at least more so than his other work (the early stuff is difficult to pin down). Maybe the word to use is native, 🤔
if you love bass check luminol by steven wilson is magic
Hope someone requests Frost*
Never heard of him or this group but I get a ton of Opeth vibes from this, and of course the drumming is fantastic
Steven Wilson actually produced on Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation for Opeth! Wilson and Akerfeldt also have a project together called Storm Corrosion that is probably not what you'd expect, but definitely worth checking out. Excellent musician all around
@@frankmenepace1766 oh that makes a TON of sense. You can definitely hear some Blackwater Park ambiance in there and really sounds like a lost cut from Damnation. Thanks for that nugget of knowledge
Good info here. Thank you!
@@Edymos1000 check out the porcupine tree song "blackest eyes". Riff was written by Mikel and given to Steven Wilson. Song is about ted Bundy.
Hé s phénoménal ,m'y only regret IS ,hé s not enough loud with his snare and toms .only regret .
Not a fan of reactions overall however i enjoyed your honest reaction here. Thanks son much. Craig Blundell is great.
Glad you enjoyed!
Craig is a monster!
Lol I. Want. 2. Do. That. When. I. Grow. Up. Lol
Gavin...
LORD GAVIN!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums King Marco😄
Marco.....
@@buckfuttler2877 A great drummer...the first time I ever saw Steven Wilson was with Marco and Guthrie...
That was definitely illegal 🤣🤣
YES!
Check this out!
Awesome German Drummer who had Auditions With “Dream Theater” , wasn’t successful ( as we know) then created a Band called The Aristocrats!
Check them out as well!
Marco Minnemann... Aristocrats guitarist Guthrie Govan was also in Steven Wilson's band.
Oh he knows about Marco
Craig is an Aquarian Heads endorsee, so no CS Dot for snare...
Love Blundell, fantastic drummer but Minnemann is still my fav with Steven Wilson.
I haven't seen Minnemann in the band. Be interesting to check out
'Luminol' live in Mexico is a good one.
This song is heavily influenced by King Crimson and Porcupine Tree. Only musicians of that caliber can play on this level.
If you fancy something a little different, how about a reaction to a reaction? Ian Paice (Deep Purple etc) has his own CZcams channel, and he reacted to a 17 year old German girl, doing a drum cover of the Deep Purple song "Burn". The drumming was top notch, and Paice actually admitted that this girl (Sina Doering) could do stuff at age 17 the he wasn't able to do at that age. Well worth a listen to and reaction, me thinks - czcams.com/video/pbt1NrUzB5Q/video.html
Yeah, and he did the same for Yoyoka's cover of the same at about 11/12 years old...
I'll tell you how many........Adam, Govan, Craig, Marco, Dave K., Nicki and Alex H. That's it, no more!!!!!
I think Gavin Harrison was and is the best Stevim Wilson drummer.
He was only on 7 songs on the first album. He's porcupine tree mostly. And the correct answer is Marco Minneman. Most diverse drummer on earth. in my humble opinion. Gavin is amongst the best though, don't get me wrong!
The only person I can think of that gets a better sound of the drums than Craig is Morgan Simpson from Black Midi. Absolute BEAST.
I can't imagine a better sound
