“Pick a tempo” was about trying to get them clapping in time. That’s why he went up the top and clapped. You can see him exchanging an eye roll with the drummer.

Devin Townsend - metal musical maverick! Almost his entire discography is in the upper echelons of what metal can sound like. He's released music as Devin Townsend, Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project, Strapping Young Lad, Casualties of Cool and spread over three decades and about 27 albums. Deadhead is from Accelerated Evolution by The Devin Townsend Band.

Agreed. The man is a legend. He's a God. He might as well be a myth too. But I'm also super pissed. I pre-ordered the Devolution Series #2 live show that I also bought a ticket for and watched when it happened. Ordered back in May. Was supposed to be released June 25th. Got pushed back to July 20th. Finally shipped. Was supposed to be here 2 days ago and the post office must have lost it. Been no updates on tracking since the 22nd. Been waiting for this for so long. Such a good show.

Yes. Although this is a go-to 'react' video, its actually not his best vocal performance due to said germs :(
The vocals at Plovdiv are fantastic and I saw him perform Deadhead live in London (just before all this Covid pain-in-the-ass) and I thought that was a better performance still.

Devin is a brilliant Canadian musician. Starting out singing for Steve Vai's band and then founding Strapping Young Lad... his most aggressive and angry material by far. Going under different names for different styles... Devin Townsend, The Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project... He blends theatrics and puppetry into many of his iterations and is just an all around amazing performer.!

  • @GrimSRT8

Somehow I stumbled across your video, and I'm glad I did, it made my day. It's a dreary Monday evening, cold and rainy here in Washington state USA. I've seen this clip of Devin a zillion times, Devin is a special soul for sure. BUT seeing your reaction, hearing your compulsive comments and facial reactions - you helped me appreciate this song all over again, thank you! It was just a pleasure seeing you discover this song and the man. AND it appears all of your videos are over a year old, nothing released in 12 months? Maybe you've quite. Just know this 64 year old man would love to have your hair vs my bold head, ha... but that's life now ain't it!

So it says this video is from a month ago, but it just popped up today in my list, and I check daily for Devin reactions lol To get a good take of his opera side, Kindgom live from Emgtv, or him singing Bring Him Home from the Les Miserables soundtrack. But arguably his best vocal performance is from this same concert, The Death of Music, Live at the Royal Albert Hall version. You're right in that the album versions aren't as good live, and with Devin that couldn't be more true. Cheers!

Devin Townsend really sells his live performances. The original has a similar vibe, but not on the same level. He originally released the song in 2003.
Unfortunately, Devin Townsend Project no longer exists. The good news is that Devin Townsend as an artist has been making a ton of music over decades.
Since this performance, I think he's come out with 2 albums since this performance in 2015. Both are a journey to listen to. He's got a double album planned to be out this year, with another expected late this year or early next year.
There are plenty of older performances to recommend before getting to his newer work, but if you're interested in a more recent song that includes some of his guitar chops, you should check out the live performance of Failure at Plovdiv in Bulgaria. It's from his Transcendence album from 2016. It's good vibes.

Wonderful reaction Yaz. Always great to see people on here hearing and seeing Devin got the first time. I genuinely loved your reaction to this. You seem like you have a sincere passion and love for live music . Devin is a living legend. My other half always says he must be an alien with his insane vocal range ever since I introduced her to his music (she used to sing in a choir). I'm old enough (and lucky enough to have seen a wide and diverse range of bands and artists over the last 33 years since I was 15 in 1988 (My first gig was right down the front of the old NEC in Birmingham for Iron Maiden). I love the Deftones too and have done for 25 years now, but I wouldn't class Devin in the same genre and as much as I love Chino Moreno, his vocal range is not a patch on Devin's. It's a big rabbit hole to get into with Devin as he has covered so many styles with that voice. Incidentally, if you want to hear his music sounding a lot more more heavy and intense then check out his Strapping Young Lad stuff from the mid 90's to around 2005 ish. It's fecking nuts and so damn heavy!

Devin Townsend has been involved in a number of "bands" The Devin Townsend Band, The Devin Townsend Project, Casualties of Cool, Strapping Young Lad, and his solo stuff. Something like 26 albums at this point in 2021. His output spans many spectrums. From atmospheric (almost like Enya) to country/vibe, to the heaviest of heavy metal. Most of his stuff is in the prog metal genre. Devin is impossible to button hole. Devin is planning and might have scheduled a European/British tour.
As far as I know, Britain is one of the places he does really well. There are several live shows from London. The Ziltoid Royal Albert, The Retinal Circus and By a Thread. Each epic in their own way. His live shows are better than the studio versions. The most recent is Ocean Machine - Plovdiv.

I'm late to this party, but Devin sits square in the prog metal category...except this is closer to something like symphonic/epic doom metal to me. If you like this, check out the title track from Opeth's Blackwater Park; it's a similar big, epic, slowish paced prog metal song. Once you've done that, branch out further into Opeth and go down the prog metal rabbit hole...

He's so varied it's never a question of if you like Devin, but when. Just have to find the right Devin for you. Grace (retinal Circus), Death of Music, Higher are some of his most enjoyable tunes and if you fancy real heavy devy check out strapping young lad his early metal band, Love? is a good introduction. Shall be watching him at Bloodstock in 2 weeks...cannot wait!

If you wanna explore his albums, his most... "complete" as a whole as far as quality goes and overall enjoyment would probably be "Transcendance".
His "Ziltoid the omniscient" is a very unique and interesting concept too but way heavier and weird, then he kinda goes all over the place, it's really hard to recommend one in particular because either he goes more instrumental in albums like "Terria" or "Synchestra" which has a few bangers that I love, either he goes more pop rock with Anneke on a few albums as well (female lead singer), either he goes country with Casualties of cool, either he goes completely bonker and chaotic with Deconstruction or Genesis, ...
I'd say Transcendance would be your best first album as far as studio versions go !

    Yes music has to.
    It wowed me
One can see it in your eyes and in your face.
And does not only wow one.
It is musically, technically so well done.
And that why you smile all the time I guess.
Great reactions, very good video of yours.
Did you ever did one of Comfortably numb of Pink Floyd?
    It us really different music.
    But progressive Rock

Can you react to the Song All Hail The New Flesh by Strapping Young Lad? It was Devin first Band before he made Devin Townsend Project 😊
