John Wesley (or “Wes” as he’s known to PT fans) was a regular on their LPs starting with In Absentia and subsequent live tours for the next several years. A native of Florida, I’ve always called him “the fifth Porcupine”….

The studio version does not have the solo at the end. Most of us heard this for the first time on this concert because getting the deluxe version of Deadwing was impossible to get. When things came out on CZcams and heard the studio, I was like the best part is missing.
And yes, probably why I like this song is because of where it fits in this concert. Was perfect timing to bring things down a bit and then lead into a heavier song. That’s why this video cuts off the way it does as it goes right into the heavier tune.
I think the guitar was made by a company called Visionary and it has a screen built in. You can see the extra wiring near the bridge. It’s cool. Has a great tone. But likely not the most pleasant to play!
And thought you might find this song a lot more boring than his other stuff. Purpose of these requests I sent is to show the range of work. And I didn’t even include stuff from his Blackfield or No Man groups. They are very different.
Can’t remember where in my list I put it but very much looking forward to your reaction on the Future Bites song I sent

I prefer to listen to this song as a lead in / long intro to the next song in the concert "Sever". It doesn't really stand up so strongly on its own. There's a video on CZcams with Half Light + Sever in the title.

That guy - That's John Wesley. He originally was the opening (solo) act on one of their tours, but then became a touring musician with the band. Not "technically" a member, but played with them a lot on concerts until Wilson went solo.

Steven Wilson (and P-Tree back in the day) is well known for his special edition releases, bonus tracks, limited edition collector's-only versions, blah blah blah. For the most part, the bonus tracks are as good as the album tracks so most serious fans always go for the special edition releases. I think this is why SW has been as successful as he has been, even though he occupies a relatively small niche in the business. I don't remember this song from that tour, but there was usually an element of unpredictability in most PT concerts. And as you say, he usually would interject these more chill songs between the more intense/proggy pieces.

Well @Colin Burroughs I’m sorry to hear that, but thankfully I don’t agree with you and have been happy to immerse myself in his music for over 25 years through all the iterations of PT and his solo work enjoying almost all of it immensely.

Bore-cupine Tree strikes again 😂 I'll keep listening to what you put out though because I have discovered a few gems by SW... but on the whole, very few.

I’ll agree that there are a lot of PT and SW songs that are boring. Take the entire Voyage 34 album where it’s one long song broken into parts where it 90% the same repeated melody and then it gets to a guitar solo. The solo is awesome but if I was the editor, the entire song would be 5 minutes and not an entire album. Lol.
I’ve been giving Justin a huge range of songs from the popular to more obscure so he gets an idea of the range. For me, the middle part of PT is my favorite and the real early stuff does little for me like the newest album where I like the bonus songs more than the official ones.
Regardless of all that, if you are in the right mood, any PT or SW album (ex future bites) are good ones to throw on a veg out on the couch for an hour.

@@mpkelley20 Yeah, but if you REALLY want to give Justin a full overview of SW's career you can't just leave out the early stuff. I'd throw in at least one song from Up the Downstair or The Sky Moves Sideways.

@@yes_head Jupiter island was going to be on my list but thought better if it. Lol. I’ll have more for him in the future. Likely going with new bands for him next time. But yes, I’ll add some early stuff for him. There is some good stuff on his early albums along with some “interesting” songs. I’ll likely look to add some stuff from his first solo album and maybe blackfield as well.
He has a song from future bites coming up, another live PT performance (a very typical request which people watch) and a song from to the bone which is one of my favorites from the album. All very different but still on a newer side. Promise I’ll go older next time.

I've seen PT, I kind of like one of SW's solo albums all right, Gavin Harrison is as fine of a drummer as there is and yet after mulling it over, over a good chunk of time, I don't really like Steven Wilson all that much. Everything isn't a funeral or a car crash or a homicide. And then there's all of his "homages" that are closer to borrowing. I used to think I was into this, but I'm not really. The older PT stuff holds up best if I had to chose.
