- Artisans in Multan in Pakistan are famous for making camel skin lamps using a naqashi painting technique that goes back 900 years. In 1910, Ustad Abdullah Naqash started doing naqashi art on camel skin. Today, his grandson, Malik Abdul Rehman Naqash, is keeping the tradition going.

How Camel Skin Is Turned Into Lamps In Pakistan | Still Standing | Business Insider
My parents got one Multan made lamp in early 90s. It moved with us across many countries over the past 3 decades. Zero maintenance. Looks exactly like it did on day 1.
Nice to know that. Thanks for sharing! 😄

Thanks business insider for covering these stories from all around the globe, doing all research, making videos out of it, translating them to English, bringing them into spotlight, letting us know about their craft and vulnerabilities they face. This "Standing Still" segment is my favorite. 😇☺️
All I can say is they deserve more $ for how much work and detail involved in making these. Those designs were awesome 👍
Such colors are organic made with lapis lazuli. And those he is making are very expansive. The 7 dollars ones are done by amateurs small ones done by his workers.

With the amount of time it takes to freestyle the floral designs these pieces should be sold for no less than $500.
$1,000 for the large pieces at least.
They’re already selling them online so I assume many of those orders are from foreign customers. If they simply appeal to rich clients the industry will thrive. They need to think bigger and not sell themselves short of their laborious craft.
you have a point.
As a Pakistani myself, these beauteous lamps are one of the main fascinations when I visit Multan. I can't imagine the hardwork that goes into crafting each lamp; all those marvelous floral patterns- beautiful!
As a leather designer from india, I know how tough the entire process is, especially the moulding. So much respect to these artists from Multan. Sending love.

I wish more people were interested and paid well for these amazing handmade crafts. These kinda things can actually turn into a luxury because of how precious they are.
It is saddening to see that in coming years beautiful arts like this will dwindle and will only be limited to a chapter in some textbook. I wish the government will take measures to keep it alive. Arts like these are the identity of that very region and we should preserve it. Love from India.
Agreed and well said
The only way to fix it, is to buy them.
Do you care enough to start spending?
My god, they're beautiful! Truly stunning. What talent. But $7 for a small lamp is far too little, that cents per hour for highly skilled work.
How does currency work and cost of living work.
You realise in these countries where they earn way less everyday costs are way less.
@@jackjohnson6884 That may well be true, but that doesn't mean a few cents per hour for highly skilled work is reasonable.
$7 for them is a lot...
Yeah I was floored by that. I understand $7 might be a decent amount of money there, but they fit all the criteria to be a luxury good. Could EASILY get $20-$50 for the smallest if they made a website, thousands for the larger ones.

Multan has so much to offer. I have such a beautiful memory of my childhood when my father was posted in multan.he used to bring beautiful multani gotta walay dupatay( scarf) , lamp we still have it, sohan halwa n mangoes in summer. Seriously south is so blessed. All my mother's wedding dresses were from multan. I still have it.
The subcontinent has so much to offer. More power to the art and the artists.
Why is it when Pakistan is mentioned you also take credit and say as a subcontinent or as a desi, but when India does something you say India only?
Just a genuine question I mean no hate.
@@Cats_are_Chads you’re aware that when he says “subcontinent” he by DEFAULT refers to India AND Pakistan respectively…
@@Cats_are_Chads because india and pakistan are one just divided by religion . I have been to both nation you look same u eat same your dress are same language is same so stop crying

respect for the craftsmen ! good old hand fashion work is priceless to bad that many old crafts are dying out,its a shame we can learn so much of it
Wow that’s a beautiful thing! All of it! The father son work relationship. And then the amount of work it takes to end up with such a beautiful product. Great work gentlemen. I thought the kids/younger generation in the USA were lazy and don’t want to work! I now see it’s all over the world, that’s a big problem. May God bless us all!!!

wow.
quite amazing lamps. I almost thought they were paper Mache. despite the painstaking work, they have a reasonable price of 7-200 dollars.
I don't think that's reasonable.. It's dirt cheap for the amount of work put in.
@@anenustad3884 exactly “these damn young people don’t want to come into the business” 10 days to make one lamp for $7? 3 lamps a month working everyday for a potential $21?!?!? Type some numbers into a spreadsheet an earn that in an hour…
@@tbone6380 I don't get the sense they are judging anyone for not going into the business, just pointing out that they are dying out because it is not viable for young people.

I studied in my school books, named"Handicraft of Pakistan" in 2008. I intended to visit Multan specially for Lamps. But it took about 13 years for me. And finally visited in june 2022. The strange thing was that my friend Muhammad Jhangir didn't knew about it, and he is living there about 4 miles away from them. I would like to thank Business Insider for thier incredible work, bcz they're the first who highlights this art. And my friend become a source of it.
It has only one message hidden "One Has To go Through Rough To Find The Real Beauty"...
in every sphere of life 😊
Every single one of these videos: "This craft is ancient and the skills were passed down from generation to generation, making beautiful products that contribute to the culture of their region. But these YOUNG PEOPLE don't want to do it just because it's back breaking labor and pays poverty wages that will keep them chained to the trade for their entire lives. Why don't they want to do that?!?!?"
a trade off of better wealth ig, you lose rich history and cultural identity

at least we have these vids as something to remember them by

It's the main difference between European and Asian cultures. Europeans were able to hold on to their arts and craftsmen and turn them into highly sought-after commodities worldwide, causing the crafts to thrive and still exist. In Asian cultures, profit took over, cultures vanished, and governments failed to protect them.
@@arslannaveed685 Eh, the healthy doses of colonialism, imperialism, denigration of non-European cultures, wars, subjugation, etc. probably didn't help...
Completely fascinating to see how these are made from beginning to end. They are absolutely exquisite pieces of art and craftsmanship. I just wish that there was a link to be able to order them online.

Hello everyone!
I'm from Multan and believe me these lamps are stunning!
Do Visit Multan, Pakistan 🇵🇰 ❤
They always say that young people "aren't interested" in these crafts due to wanting higher profitability from other jobs. I feel like 90% of then aren't necessarily not interested and moreover just looking to survive in a harsh world. My family always supported my art, from a very young age, and wanted me to make a career out of it. However, schooling is expensive as Hell in the US for steady-paying jobs in art fields, even with aid. So finding work that isn't artistic, part of my heritage, or anything else is necessary. Not everyone has the skills, connections, or means to delve into this work as a career, and it's a LOT of time invested just to learn. Not everyone grows up learning this while they're available mentally and not working to support themselves or a family, either.
It's just feels disingenuous, manipulative, and even a bit vindictive to say all young people from said country aren't interested in learning their heritage because they're essentially "greedy". I bet many would love to learn, if they had tons of free time and were living comfortably while doing so.
Pakistani, afghan and persian common people(people outside cities mostly) are very kind and never cares much about money. For their standards going after money isnt always seen as great
nope, im not interested because im lazy. plus you see all those flies, the reason they didnt add sound at that part is cause it sounds likes you have 10 drones just hovering there.
I wish I could agree with you. I wish you were right. but I have 14 grandchildren who have the know-how who aren't interested in gardening for vegetables or flowers or food or pleasure- creating bonsai trees for Beauty- sewing for necessity or pleasure- cooking canning or preserving any kind of food from fresh meat or produce ethnic or otherwise - reading actual books- ceramics painting or any kind of Art For Art's Sake- keeping a journal or hearing stories of their parents grandparents or ancestors.. all things which I enjoy doing and wistfully dream of the day they share any one of these interests/ passions lifeskills with me. I love them I'm proud of them but they have NO life skills that they choose to use on a regular basis that have to do with actual life as WE have known it. They use computers and cell phones constantly like it is an extension of their person or it is part of their consciousness- order doordash take out- watch tiktok and play video games.. this IS their life besides School and part-time jobs to pay for their food orders and credit cards. It is what it is. I'm hoping for that big solar flare that creates a new Harrington event so TVs cell phones computers and new cars stop working then this entire technology generation of young people will have the free time for a do-over. They will pick up the arts customs and culture of the people groups that connect them with the people that love them. What a lovely thought. It gives me hope and a sense of Peace just thinking about it!
so true, necessity always takes precedence in the current world. as a pakistani i too would like to learn but as u said it’s not always possible
As an artist I'm really impressed how the lamp was made. I hope they will continue making it. It's really beautiful. I wish I'll get one too someday.
The young generation should jump in this art and try to make it more profitable ......
I love ancient technology & it's product
Hope they will keep it alive ...

Those lamps are beautiful I really liked the big one he put outside near the end. I would put one in my condo. Hopefully his son takes over the business and keeps it going
It's government responsibility to keep this alive 🙏
$7 !! For a lamp . All that brilliant work !!! So cheap. It’s worth so much more.🌺
This video was amazing.
Wow fantastic, amazing 😍🤩
So those lamps are RAWHIDE?! I always wondered! If their younguns aren't I terested in learning, I would gladly sit for a lesson on Zoom or whatever floats their boat if they have access to it! I have scraped hides for tanning before, so I have at least some of the skill. I wouldn't presume to paint the designs they use, but making the actual shades looks rather fun! Or, I would buy blank shades from them, and go nuts with the painting myself!
Please provide link to their website aswell so that we can support their carft and skill
That's awesome...👌

There was a step skipped from roughly plopping the leather on the mold to how it comes out super smooth and thin/ translucent after it dries.

There definitely is. Even after applying the soda, it still doesn’t look smooth.
It's probably trade secret.
Pretty understandable.
