  • There is a circus sideshow at the home of Principal Bass Alexander Hanna. You’ll have to see it to believe it! Check out his performance of the Elephant from Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals.

      Yeah idk why bassists can’t play clear notes usually

    • @GeckoBass

      @@AMC08 Uhhhh… because most bass players aren’t the principal bass of the Chicago symphony. For a real explanation, the instrument is naturally more muddy sounding, especially in a section. Alexander Hanna is a 1 in a million bassist which is how he can get such a great tone.

    • @MotoMoto-ld9gi
      @MotoMoto-ld9gi Před rokem +2

      @@AMC08 a lot of bassists have bad setups that make their instrument sound muddy (ie Bad strings, misaligned bridge). I assume you don’t like the bassist at your school and the explanation for that is simply that the school instruments haven’t had a check up in a decade and produce a muddy sound.

      @@GeckoBass He's playing in solo tuning as well as the piece being played a whole step higher than originally written (F instead of Eb). That can make a huge difference in the clarity as well.

      It's actually a whole step higher, not a half step, and that's because that bass is tuned in "solo tuning", a whole step higher than normal orchestral tuning (F#-B-E-A instead of E-A-D-G). He's fingering the same notes as normal but they're coming out higher (and the piano part needs to be transposed up a whole step).

      Solo tuning! The strings are tuned up a whole step from orchestral tuning (F# B E A). It was done to make the bass sound more like a solo instrument. I guess Alexander Hanna just took the whole thing up a whole step for pragmatic reasons haha
