    The mandrake-dog thing is historically accurate, as far as folklore goes! Look at the wiki for mandrake, there's a quote right in there. Also -- I'll say that thinking about this show in purely mechanical DnD terms is sort of a mistake! The worldbuilding and rules of the setting are super naturalistic and that's one of my favorite things about it. To me it feels like the mangaka sat down and thought 'okay how would all these fantasy abstractions actually work in a real world?'

    • @heatth1474
      @heatth1474 Před 5 měsíci +36

      I honestly think the mechanics is more inspired by video games than D&D directly. There is a lot of Wizardry in this story, from what I hear. It is just that Kui is more of a fan of old school Western RPGs, so it doesn't feel like the myriad of JRPG inspired anime we have now.

    My favorite thing about Laios hyperfixation on eating monsters is that *no one in the party noticed it until now*
    From what it has been shown so far (at least in the anime) most of the people in the party have been adventuring with him for at least a few weeks (and that's a conservative estimate) before the encounter with the red dragon, but, only now they are learning about his weird "hobby"
    It's like suddenly learning that someone you have been friends with for a few months has spent enough money on Warhammer miniatures to put a down payment on a house even though there was no indication they were even into it to begin with.

    7:46 Actually, a book that endangers dogs for the benefit of elves could actually be a well thought out, "If humans REALLY don't last long to elves, dogs are nothing in comparison", which leads to dogs being sacrificial pawns for races that live longer than humans

    I think something that really comes through in dungeon meshi is that the creator ryoko kui is a genuine fan of dnd and fantasy stuff. She posts fan art of games like elder scrolls and baldurs gate often and she puts a lot of love and care into crafting her world building. It feels really refreshing compared to a lot of other more bland fantasy series.

    a snake-tailed rooster is actually a very common way basilisk's are portrayed in history and mythology, there are obviously the more snake-like depictions as well but this is definitely a faithful portrayal of a basilisk as well and probably not some loophole to have a cockatrice and not call it that. The cockatrice is a very similar but technically distinct mythological creature. Mentions of Basilisks actually go all the way back to the first century, while the first English mention of a cockatrice isn't until over 1000 years later in the 14th century, though it wasn't until around the 8th century that you start getting references to basilisks having anything to do with Roosters. Probably the most notable early example of a rooster-y basilisk is in Canterbury Tales by Chaucer in the 14th century around when the first mentions to cockatrices are.

    Speaking of ecological realism in dungeons, D&D creator Gary Gygax was actually very passionate about it, to the point where the term "Gygaxian naturalism" was coined, to refer to parts of the old guides that are all advice to the GM to think about why monsters behave or set up their homes the way they do.

    In our D&D campaign we defeated a hobgoblin war camp by a bay, then used their base to rest up. My character, a pescetarian, found their stash of dried fish and ate well. Then, continuing through the camp we discovered the place where they hung up the mermaids they killed to dry. My next character incidentally did not eat fish.

  • @MrNephthys17

    The references to dogs are possibly related to how in early editions of DnD, Mages were so useless at low levels that the guide encouraged them to spend their starting funds on a couple mean dogs instead of equipment. The dogs would be far more useful in combat than their single Lv1 spell. Dogs were also commonly used as easy ways to "safely" spring traps, like in this episode. You could get around not bringing a Thief if you just bought a few dogs with you when exploring a dungeon. Theres a long history of adventuring in DnD with a small pack of dogs!

  • @geistincarnate
    @geistincarnate Před 7 dny

    The dog method does actually make sense, just only from a foolproof/safety viewpoint for novice wizards lol. Rather than gambling your life on your reflexes when cutting the heads off, or your ability to eyeball the minimum safe distance with the long rope, using a dog allows a person to guarantee that they're at a safe distance by standing as far away as possible such that the dog's sensitive hearing can hear the call, but their human hearing isn't affected by the mandrake. This method also makes more sense when you remember that it's designed for novice wizards to gather medicinal samples (necessitating only one, maybe two dogs), rather than for subsistence gathering like the party needs.
