- We recently discovered several vintage, never before seen, 16mm films at a garage sale which were taken during a worldwide tour in 1940. This digital conversion of a short portion of those films depict the pre-tsunami town of Hilo, Hawaii. Note: A few scenes were edited from a second trip to Hawaii circa 1952. All Rights Reserved. Music: "Hilo My Home Town" "Hilo Hula" "Kaua I Ka Huahua'i" by Ku'uipo Kumukahi
Brings back memorys here in Hilo!!
Mahalo for a wonderful video of Hilo Town.
Great video, but it is definitely not all from 1940. The green Ford F-Series pickup truck at 1:09 is a 1951 model (it has a grill that wasn't introduced until 1951 and the side emblem was changed in 1952).
The clip from 0:52 to 1:04 looks like it could be pre-'46 tsunami, but then at 1:05 we're looking down Haili Street from the Keawe intersection and across Kamehameha we a naked tsunami-swept green field (and a few early '50s sedans parked on the right).
What a treasure! Mahalo ,my vavoo(Paka) was baptized in Hawi My Dad was shipped out on maneuvers Dec 6 1941 and I lived in Kailua/Lanikai from 1974- 1984 Never should have left Hawaii is always in my heart
As a Kanaka Maoli. My Kanaka OHANA is from Kahua Ranch. And I'm raised Kailua (Lanikai) just like you 😊
Brings back wonderful memories!!!
Awesome for us here in Hilo town! (User added the "Note" after my comment)
Aunty Dolly was a wonderful woman. She was my mother-in-law. so glad you like the website! I am getting ready to set it up for 2013.
As far as I know, Aunty Hazel never had a halau (in those days more likely called a troupe or a school) though she was a very fine hula dancer. Thelma, my grandmother, did have a hula troupe in St. Louis, MO, however, in the 19-teens and 20s.
Very cool! Mahalo!
The song, "Hilo, My Home Town" was written by my cousin, Betty Lou Yuen, and choreographed by her mother, Hazel Yuen. You can see our `ohana's choreography at LeiDay (dot) net
Malama pono,
Leilehua Yuen
I went to school in Hilo from '65-'75.
Mahalo for uploading this! Nani Hilo...
Wonderful find, thanks for posting. Mountains at 2:03 and 2:27 are on an older island, maybe West Maui or Oahu? Windward side of Kohala? No finger peaks on the rest of Big Island. Great stuff, Kailua Kid, all new .
gem anscombe I think you are correct, there are no mountains like that on the Big Island. Looks like Waimanalo.
Thank you for sharing.....I just LOVE the way Hawaii used to look; in it's Pre- Over-Building & Over-Population took over!! :)
Francine Grace Haha Hilo hasn’t changed! Lmao
@@sidjtd isn't a lot declared historic? That's why it looks almost the same as it does here. Kress building lidat.
Neat video. Wasn't around in the 40's and 50's yet, but I do remember riding the sampan buses around town late 60's early 70's. Anyone remember Shake Shake?
You got it Gary. The youtube user did mention that parts are from 1952. Really neat though eh?
@IslandTrust .... it says that in the description... 1952
It looks to me that pretty much the bulk of this video is 1952 (from 1:05 onwards), with only the opening shots from 1940.
In the first shot of Kamehameha Ave. (0:51), everything on the right side of the street was destroyed by the 1946 tsunami.
It's a small world, Leilehua. Did Hazel have her own halau in Hilo? If so, during what years? PS - I liked your leiday.net web site, especially the short video on Aunty Dolly. She looked like a real sweatheart! Mahalo.
Sweet
Check out my more recent one of Hilo. It's a b/w that shows the old Hilo Railroad and female entertainers dressed in drab uniforms. Sign of the times in 1930.
It is a small world, indeed! No, Aunty Hazel did not have a halau, but she did teach `ohana. Mahalo! I'm glad you like the site! Yes, Aunty Dolly was an amazing person. it was a privilage to be her daugher in law. A hui hou! Leilehua
Luv 2 hear Auntie Stephannie Lilinoe Buchannan and The Browns Boyson (r.i.p.) and Bobo and I believe uncle Danny Paleka at Piano
Was wondering who was singing and playing. Thank you.
