Awesome video, love watching these. I have the same engine in the same truck. Real love hate relationship. A few years back we had starting issues with it. Sometimes it would fire right up. Sometimes it would crank and crank and crank before it'd start. After chasing our tail around the truck we found the fuel pickup tube in the tank had cracked at the top of the tank. Which was letting air be drawn into the fuel system. Now if I could get that coolant leak fixed...

I'm going out on a limb to predict ether the plungers have seized in the pump elements from water entry or one of the fuel metering sleeve control links has cracked locking the rack linkage in the shut down position. If it failed to start after sitting a longe time likely number one, if it was running and failed at re start number 2. Both very common faults on 3208 sleeve metering fuel pumps but not the inline type on 3204, 3304, 3306. Agree with your trouble shooting methodology, simple stuff first, starting with no smoke no fuel. You get a bit of fuel from the cracked injector lines on crank becase the injector pump elements are still displacing fuel but not enough to overcome the nozzle VOP. Let us know what you found.👍 Cheers mate 🍻

Why do VE pumps wear the shaft on an angle so quickly?
    Apparently Miss alignment...
But in my case I think the housing was out or the bearings that were made to suit the pump were... As the pump that came off prior to a new pump going on did not fail in the same fashion... It failed with the Cam self destructing and fragmenting through the pump. Not great.

What do you think about the low sulfur diesel really doing harm to the old style mechanical fuel injection pump? I hear without the lubricity of the sulfur it really takes it’s toll on those older style pumps such as the one you have here

That was a very big concern when those fuels were coming out initially back in the 2000's. I would say trim my experience it hasn't damaged them as much as many people thought it would. I'm sure it hasn't helped them though and perhaps someone that is much better educated on the subject could chime in with some information.

Probably a farm truck, that old of filter may only have a few thousand miles on it. My old cabover had 15k miles on the overhaul that had been done nearly 4 years prior to me buying it from the farmer. Not saying its a good thing to do, it supposed to be done yearly regardless if the milage interval is met, but I can't say I'm not guilty of it on vehicles that see limited use. "I'll get to it"

i hated those fuel/water seperators. had more of them suck air than didnt especially in cold weather. with a frozen line that hand pump would pull serious vacuum and suck itself in. those throttle shafts would wear in the back housing woudnt leak but wouldnt idle stall and hard starting. i had more than one pump slip on the gear throwing itself out of time. its just a taper lock and torque bolt.

I take the darn thing off and put a spin on primary filter. Had a customer several years ago with a 3208 in a motor home. Had to raise the bed to change fuel filters. I took all that off, routed fuel line to a compartment on the side. Put primary, secondary, hand pump and put a bleed hose down below compartment.
