  • I can't believe how many calls and emails we've had asking about this bike... it really is like nothing we've experienced before.
    Why?
    Well. This bike is designed for shredders. The bike has a great spec and really stands out for how far your dollar stretches. Great frame. Great geometry (very much at the cutting edge of geometry). Great suspension components. Great Drivetrain.
    this bike is an excellent foundation for a high end build... as time progresses, you may be tempted to upgrade wheels and brakes... or you might just be thrilled with this bike right out of the box. Pretty impressive for $4799 Canadian ($3599 USD).
    Our Bike shop proudly sells Marin (we're fans of the brand to be honest) as well as Giant (Yup, fans of them too!), Rocky Mountain (of course we're fans of them) and Pivot (so good).

    Excellent review. If you had to choose between this bike and the Marin Rift Zone 3 as an all around trail bike. Which would you go with? And if it was your first MTB?

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  Před 3 lety +1

      There are arguments for either bike but I would pick the Rift Zone - it is a better all around bike for a not-so-aggressive rider and won't require as good of a riding technique to get the bike to perform well. New riders on these very modern geometry bikes may be more likely to have front wheel wash-outs in corners and because new riders don't typically have the strength or stamina to do big climbs, the steep seat tube angle may be uncomfortable on mellower trails.

      @BikeBrosBikeShop  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Paul, I'd suggest measuring sag to figure out if the spring is suitable. You will be aiming for 25% to 30% sag - measured as the percentage of stroke your static body weight compresses the shock.

  • @timyeates6911
    @timyeates6911 Před 3 lety

    Hi Bike Bros
    Great channel!
    I was wondering if you could please help me with some starting suspension settings for my Marin Alpine Trail XR (size XL).
    I purchased from the sole Australian retailer (I am in Australia) who advised me that they do not alter the suspension from the way it came in the factory. The Australian retailer recommend that suspension is tuned for the riders weight before riding.
    I have never adjusted suspension before, however yesterday was able to set my front sag to around 22 (with riding gear, seated) and rear sag to around 27 (with riding gear, seated). That rear sag was achieved at around 1.5 full 360 degrees turns from the top (recall that the maximum is 5 turns).
    The earliest any local bike shops can book me in for a suspension tune is 2 weeks from now, so I am keen to get a starting suspension dialled in earlier!
    My XL Alpine Trail XR came with a 450mm rear coil.
    Height 189cm or 6'2"
    Weight 89kg or 196 pounds
    Weight with riding gear 95kg or 209 pounds
    I would describe myself as intermediate skill level, I enjoy cautiously riding black downhills, I am certainly not a fast rider.
    Do you have any suggested setting for my suspension please? As a starting point before my tune in 2 weeks (I have a shock pump). I.e. front and rear sag, how many clicks/turns of rebound and compression, front and rear?
    The RockShox documentation does not actually recommend a sag (it gives a large range), and for rebound and compression it asks you to ride and adjust until it feels good.
    Any assistance on starting settings would be most appreciated please.
    Cheers
    Tim
    PS. I asked you on another video which size you would recommend for me given my height and span, you pointed me to an XL. Happy to report that the size of the XL feels perfect!

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, I'm afraid these sorts of things are a bit too time consuming to go over in the comments section. I would say, on front suspension that your riding attitude affects where within the suggested range of pressure you should run your fork. I like bunny hopping, jumping and manualling alot so I run my fork a bit stiffer so I can push against it. Other riders will run a softer fork if they let the fork smash into more stuff and are less concerned about the stuff I like. Also, for the rear shock, you may have to ride the bike in the harshest trail in the most aggressive manner you're comfortable with to test the spring. You don't want to feel any harsh bottom outs but you do want to feel like you're able to use all your travel. Turning the preload on the coil only changes how much force it takes to begin the shock moving, you will still bottom out with the same force.

    ...and XT shifter for instant release and double release. It's stupid that companies still put more expensive RDs, while for performance actually the higher class shifter makes a difference. For this kind of bike even the Deore M6100 RD would be enough; at least it would hurt less when it gets torn off by some rock or sth.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  Před 3 lety +2

      I hear and read these comments about shifter preference quite often. I'm personally less concerned with the multi-shift ability of higher end shifters. It is still easy to push shift buttons faster than the derailleur can act. I'm a huge fan of Deore and would be happy riding it except for the weight when using all Deore components on a bike... I understand why bike companies spec fancy derailleurs as an overwhelming number of customers fixate on that one part to evaluate component quality of a bike. I personally would prefer money spent on brakes and rotors...

    • @OYeahan
      @OYeahan Před 3 lety

      @@BikeBrosBikeShop yeah, you mentioned the brakes etc. I just wanted to add that some people might appreciate the more responsive action of the XT shifter, especially when coming from SRAM.
      I've seen a 150mm+ full suspension Marin bike with cheapest single-pot hydro brakes from Shimano (including ridiculously looking 3-finger brake levers) - and with such brakes a 180mm rotor in the front didn't help either. Putting such brakes to this kind of bike is completely outrageous, should not happen even because of the safety issues...
      To be honest I also bought a XT RD, but that was back when there was no Deore yet and the difference between SLX and XT wasn't that large, and in my experience the pulley wheels with ball bearings make quite a improvement for dirty riding conditions.

That said, for the price I love that they didn't cut corners on suspension components as they are the most expensive to upgrade. I think the product managers decided to devote money to the right parts - it is pretty easy to upgrade brake pads if needed, then brakes down the road without ever getting slammed with a super expensive upgrade.
