Good analysis. Both are very good models by GE, but operating conditions are different. In India, close to 75% of route length is electrified which is probably why fuel tank capacity and range is less. Also, turntables are rare in India and many have been dismantled after phase-out of steam locomotives. Dual cab is therefore the norm in India. WDG4G is a pure freight locomotive which was proposed to be used on the Dedicated Freight corridor for hauling double stack containers. Hence max speed of 100 kmph. However, this route is now being electrified with high-mount catenary and long pantographs. Therefore WDG4G may also become redundant in a few years when 100% electrification is completed in India.

You mis understood some of the terms, like braking power & axel load, axel load for Locomotives should be high, which makes them stable on rails, low axel weight is considered good for rolling stocks but its opposite for Locomotives.
Higher axel weight has less wheel slippage and more tractive effort so a heavy Locomotive can pull longer loads, india has longer trains than Pakistan so we see WDG4G to be havier than GEU-40 also condition of the railway line decides designed axel load for a Locomotive. So there is no pass fail between WDG4G & GEU-40 regarding axel loads, even if we consider the fact then AC6000 weights about 192 tons? Obviously GEU-40 & WDG4G aren't that good as of AC6000.
Also the difference in braking powers of GEU & WDG are due to the loads which they are going to pull, in Pakistan small loads, less braking power as compared to India.
To me there is no such difference between WDG & GEU except dual cabs, rest is same to same, also their max permissible speeds are same.
Happy to see good information shared by you for railfans of both countries, thumbs up!

@@RailCaptures-byGKP there is difference of gear ratio which generates more tractive effort, and in the process of increasing tractive effort, we always loose speed. indian railways don't care much about speeds for freight trains as of now, their more focus is on haulage capacity of the locomotives. Even our wag12b having bo-bo + bo-bo bogie configuration with 12000hp is restricted to 100-110 kmph, because speed is not needed as the average speed of freight trains on DFC Corridors is going to be around 80 kmph

    • @RailCaptures-byGKP
      @RailCaptures-byGKP Před 2 lety +1

@@shirishsalunkhe9374 All freight hauling locos of Indian Railways are having max operational speed of 100 Kmph, BUT WAG-12B is an exception in this case, it is certified for operating speed of 120 Kmph. And also upcoming 9000Hp variant of "WAG-9HH" are also expected to have an operational speed of 120 Kmph. These both locos WAG-12B & WAG-9HH are specially made to operate on DFC & its feeder routes. IR is planning to gradually upgrade freight wagons so that they can run at 120 kmph with full load on DFC. As of now upgrading the wagons is not on priority though, as with opening of DFC itself has helped freight trains to maintain an average speed of 90-95kmph; with 120 kmph upgradation the average speed of freight trains will go upto 110 kmph atleast!

GEU40 is a dual purpose locomotive hauling both passengers and freight trains, while WDG4G is a Freight only locomotive..This is the reason GEU40 is a lighter and a faster locomotive.
The diesel tank in WDG4G is kept smaller to reduce weight and also Indian Railways has Diesel refueling facilities at all major stations..
In future priority for IR is to shift all locomotives to Electric Traction and Diesel locomotives would be used in limited numbers..
The once now being made in India have a different configuration custom suited for various Railway Zones..

Less axle load doesn't mean it will have wheel slip issues ? I heard an Indian railways engineer saying they prefer heavier locomotives for freight for the same reason.

  • @sandeepmoitra8423
    @sandeepmoitra8423 Před 3 lety +9

    Sir,
Although you may find speciation of GEU 40 better than WDG -4G. But GEU 40 has generalised specification & they r not ment for Goods loco.
Per axial load of load defines the tractive load of loco which defines practical power of loco as the wheel should not slip while pulling the load. A loco with less Horse power can have better tractive effort. If WDG -4G and GEU- 40 connected back to back and they pull each other then net result movement will be towards direction of WDG - 4G due to higher per axial load. This is also achieved by changing gear ratios. The gear ratio calculation is as per indian railway standards
Secondly goods loco r not defined to run more than speed limit of 100 kmph as double rake carriage van are used. Here average speed of Loco matters and this is achieved with dedicated freight corridor. Higher speed of load can lead to fall of load.
Third in GEU- 40 higher fuel tank tank used to increase weight of loco.. 6000 ltr capacity of WDG- 4G is sufficient for one run.
Hence the result is clear that WDG-4G is better and they meet all world standard and specifications.
For better information u can see videos of loco motive that why indian railways has given tender to manufacture WDG-4G even though india will achive 100% railway electrification by 2023.
Fourth if compair design of GEC-40 with WDG-4G. GEC-40 had a old retro look with a bump on short hood side ( An orthodox colour which is used throughout generations) but WDG-4G has a new colour full design with dual cab has brand new look.
Here in India for fright we also have electic loco of 12000 HP.
U can review all loco of Indian railways. Here we are also manufacturing loco and rake for other countries and exporting them.
We welcome you if u come to India. U will find all locomotive 🚂 in India quite interesting.

    Wow!!! Amazing topic to discuss....
Actually both of these ES43ACI(geu40) and ES43ACMI(wdg4g) are actually derived from GE ES44AC, which is actually a 192T locomotive which produces 890KN...
But sir according to my information is that actually strength of a locomotive is measured by starting tractive effort (STE) not on continous tractive effort(CTE),
Geu40 produces 500KN, and wdg4g produces 544KN, so as per that wdg4g can pull more load than geu40 initially... Here in IR wdg4g is currently pulling 4800-5000T loaded coal trains at 90-100kmph speed at WDFC and EDFC...
But on the other hand geu40 can pull upto only 4500 tons, but main advantages is that geu40 lighter in weight and can go upto 120kmph and have better tank capacity.... So my conclusion is for load wdg4g is better, for better speed and long distances geu40 is better than wdg4g...

I think it is due to our rail operational psychology not a technical point to pull 4500 tons. When power output is same then GEU can go for 5000 tons. Simply in india passenger rake go by 22 to 25 coaches but here 18 nd max 20 so GEU is not inefficient rather it is our rail operations

@@naeemliaquat39I appreciate your knowledge, but for your kind information, the power output doesn't decide the load pulling capacity...the actual load pulling capacity is decided by tractive effort... Geu40 produces 500KN and wdg4g have 544KN, which means 44KN extra which means wdg4g can pull more load than geu40 and dynamic braking of wdg4g is 272KN and geu40 has 250KN, which means load pulling and better acceleration wdg4g is better but for speed geu40 is better as it has 120kmph top speed....
For example a 4000hp American locomotive produces 800KN tractive effort, where as an European electric of 8600hp locomotive produces only 300KN... Which means American 4000hp locomotive can pull 2-3 times than 8600hp e loco...
And in PR due to short loop lines maximum freight wagons can be accomodate is 40-45 wagons... Which means around 3500-3800tons... which is still less for geu40... In short geu40 is under utilised, due to short loop lines

@@naeemliaquat39 geu40 and wdg4g are frieght locomotives, so it's doesn't depends on number of passenger coaches pulled, wdg4g is not at all used passenger train, ...and secondly I never said that geu40 is inefficient, it's one of the best locomotive to have... geu40 is made PR condition, and wdg4g is made for IR condition, so the top speed and tractive effort is different for both locomotives even though their power output is same...

Thank you for this video. While India negotiated for a tech transfer and most of the locomotives will be made in India, Pakistan imported all of the ones in ready state from US. Pakistan should have negotiated a tech transfer so they could be manufactured in future when demand increases.
Also why are these powerful beasts used for passenger haul? It's being under utilized. It's true value if for freight services. Anyways, great informative video bhai.

TOT is best option and INDIA did very well, $2.5B project is a one of the big project for GE....and that big project opened the door for India to build GE locomotive by their own hands,
PR dont have much money to invest in locomotive,s and GE will not transfer its technology on just these smaller orders,
Lacking of passenger train locomotives is one of the main reason....that's why GEU40 is being used with Express trains

Excellent comparison between the two locos, and yes the differences are minor and almost inconsequential. But one glaring difference even apart from the dual cab is about the extra 2000 liter tank in the GEU40 compared to the G4G.. that makes a difference in everyday operations but maybe IR would shrug it off saying “electrification of tracks” so Diesel engines not really required, so maybe this is just like a backup. Bhai, hum Indians kisi de bhi kaam chala lete hain, woh aadat ho chuki hai, so maybe this was what even IR would have thought. Great, informative video, enjoyable!!.

The main purpose of wdg4g to have just 6300 litres was to lower the axle loads... for EDFC and WDFC it's okay can have better fuel capacity and can exceed upto 25tons per axle, but other tracks of IR is limited to 22.5 to 23tons... So keeping that in mind they lowered the fuel capacity to 6300 litres...

Only $400Million project infront of $2.5billion of Indian Railways,

and ZCU case us very different and ridiculous too....PR did not announced it publicly regarding the current conditions of these locomotives, whom to blame?.... are these really substandard locomotives or we didn't maintained it accordingly....that's why they are just pulling out the spares from grounded locos to keep them rolling on track.... shameful
