The dancer, Fred Astaire was at a recording studio making an album with Oscar Peterson, the famous drummer Kuppa, and other famous musicians working backup. The producer wanted Fred to tab some rhythms to be sliced together with the album's final cut. The musicians and sound engineers were gobsmacked. Fred, at 72 yr old was as limber as a 20 yr old very fit gymnast who could stand on one foot while balanced on the other foot as he unlaced his one shoe and put on his taps. They guys said the same. it was either the bass or lead guitarist that told this story sharing a story that border on disbelief.

I started doing Bosu ball 20+ years ago, I'm 67 now. Kung fu had already improved my balance, then one day I saw a young woman balancing on a Bosu ball and thought "That is cool!" At first I did it using the barre for balance. If I let go my legs and the ball would go into an uncontrollable oscillation. But I persisted, and now I do kung fu kicks and other exercises on it. I recommend doing it barefoot or with minimalist shoes. Also, I recommend doing something like Tai Chi as a gentle way to keep your balance sense honed.

Also, dance makes for amazing conditioning. At my first rock-climbing class, the instructor asked if I had been or was a dancer. I said yes and asked how he knew. He said that we have a built-in sense of balance, which he can see right away in how we move on the climbing wall.

i can do the socks and shoes bit (on floor). i have a very aggressive arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis) and I'm 40 this year. the reason i can do this has partly to do with my current mobility practices (hoping to enhance greatly this year) and partly due to the fact that I used squat toilets until I was 17 and finally there's always been a lot of ground sitting, which I haven't abandoned (unlike the squat toilet).
this man has amazing strength and balance. i hope to reach this level in a couple of years. but my arthritis slows down everything, so can't be too certain.
