I hate that people are trying to reduce Kendrick diss to Drakes Bi-Racialness... It has absolutely nothing to do with that. Drake purposely does not align with any pro Black politic which can also be a critique of many (fully black) people i.e. a Clarence Thomas. Also, lets be serious... Drake does not show up in the world same way a Kendrick Lamar does and Drake being able to lean on his white side when it benefits him (calling rick ross racist for example) is a valid critique.

I think it’s an ethno-cultural issue, not really a racial one. It’s about Drake is being seen as more performative around his blackness for entertainment gain, while not taking up any space around black political/economic/social issues. Drakes environment led him to TV shows like degrassi. It’s about how/where he grew up, or at least how ppl perceive him.

I think it’s intellectually lazy to reduce a record like, “Euphoria” to Kendrick being a colorist. He was speaking to the point that Drake is not from the culture he proclaims to be from and when he says nga it comes off as corny/cringe to people that are authentically from said culture. I’m surprised this went over so many peoples heads especially since Kendrick is married to a biracial woman.

It requires time to examine another's cultural behaviors and their contributions to said culture. And it's not like Drake came out declaring what and where his cultural loyalties lie. It would take years of watching from afar of how someone responds especially when they operate from large platform and have huge overall influence. On Kendrick revoking Drake's use of the N-word, (taking the whole song in context) had nothing to do with race. It was more about nationality and ethnic culture. Kendrick's emphasis was on Drake being Canadian adopting and maladapting Black American culture. It was more a gesture of, "We're tired of you cosplaying us, your pass is revoked."

But Drakes dad is American and he was raised with him (black American) and his mother (white Canadian). This entire thing speaks to dividing black people. Taking drake out of it if this was any other person that was raised to be biracial I don't understand how all of a sudden that makes that person the bad guy. They have influence from both cultures. I personally just don't like anything that's dividing us including anyone that's biracial because they are apart of us as black people. Similair as Africans not allowing African Americans to be apart of their culture. I'm just not with it

Really, hip hop has been so influential and it accelerated many things as Rashad argued, whether positive or negative. Whoever is in control of the distribution of the medium has a great power. Even if there is a distribution of good and bad medium, their is a target audience and the target audience will either get more of the bad or more of the good messages. And if the message is put out long enough in a similar manner, the target audience will begin to emulate and assimilate as a result of similar words, beats, rhythms, and so on (perfect example of this psychological play is in the movie "Focus"). Unfortunately, when I look in our community, it appears that we get more of the bad.
The other thing is the experience of the youth that record labels build their riches off of. If they can get the youth when he or she is young, encourage them to turn their pains into music but not work to change how they inform/ share with the masses overtime, that is where the issue of responsible guidance comes in. If there is no proper guidance, you will continue to create something that is possibly harmful to others. Rashad highlights the responsibility of the artist, but if they aren't aware or in control, what then? Royce highlights that his experiences now compared to when he started has been eye opening - a reason he hasn't put out an album in a while. When you begin to become more aware, you realized a great deal of things. This is not to blame hip hop, but it is to emphasize a need to be aware and responsible to not continue a cycle.
And finally, as a teacher, I see students on a daily who don't even see their parents when they go home. You can highlight how it's the parents responsibility to ensure their kids aren't watching or listening to certain music, but consider the factors hindering that - a parent working long hours to maintain the bills and put food on the table, and who may be a single parent too; a parent who had their child at a young age still may have the mindset of a child - babies raising babies; lack of support, kids going to school and getting influence, parents who don't even care, a lack of accountability on their part and on many children nowadays and if you really pay attention, you have parents asking most of the time what their children want when it should be a parent choice as a guidance move (example: you are able to afford certain things but because you want to be your child's best friend, you go out of your way to spend money you don't have). A child is a child, respect them, but they are not an adult. Our environment impacts how we operate, but we must also push to develop the environment and still maintain a sense of connection without destroying the very thing that help to develop it.

Nobody thinking logically compares Drake and J. Cole’s blackness. Colorism certainly is not productive but, that isn’t the issue. It was Drake who said, “My white friend said you N’s crazy. I hope no one heard that, cuz if they do ‘WE’ gon’ be in some trouble!” We can reduce it to just rap, but his seeming to leverage blackness selectively when it’s convenient for his benefit makes me question if he’s choosing a side when he says “we” in that bar. Who is the we? Sounds like choosing a side. I can’t see either Rashad or Ian saying anything like that ever. Should we not question the light nature with which Drake makes these sort of bars?

I detest when folks rip on Hip-hop as if it's the absolute worst & hide behind "It's influencing our kids". You can't keep using hip hop, video games or movies as the crutch to raising your own damn kids. These kids can decipher what's real between what's entertainment just like we did when we were Young. Folks who believe Hip hop lyrics probably think Pro Wrestling is real. For Ian & Rashad to take that stance of comparing hip-hop to drug epidemic while piggy backing off hip hop entertainer's fame is crazy to me! Glad Royce was there to stand up for Hip-Hop.

Surprise to see the perspective on Kendrick’s take on Drake being mixed race. It’s not at all about the outer layer but the inner consciousness. I’m biracial, same as Drake and J.Cole and Kendrick’s wife for that matter but Kendrick is digging at drakes own identity insecurities. He saying he is not from the culture that produced hip hop. He is ok with him singing melodies and making pop music but don’t talk tough guy ish. Because it’s not real, he assimilates to blackness. He trying, it’s not natural.
Loved the commentary with Royce…excellent insight!

As someone who doesn't listen to hip hop regularly and never got into the Drake hype. It's clear many people are jealous of Drake's success. The level of jealousy and envy displayed is something I've never seen in my life and its actually scary the average person cant put their bias aside to see the truth. Whenever you give someone that amount of energy all you are really saying is that you wish you had what they had. Perceptive people understand what I'm saying. There is no way in hell I would ever let someone know I am that bothered by their success. If I was Drake you wouldn't be able to tell me anything after a stunt like this. LOL.

Royce seems to be unaware that the labels were assigned to support the prison industry complex. Granted many artist today enter the game talking negatively. But we can’t act like majority of the artists from the early years of hip hop had some positive substance to their music. Also there are interviews of artists complaining that labels were shelving their projects and telling them they didn’t deliver the type of music they wanted to push which was more gangster and street type of music. Now I personally don’t know if it was a supply and demand thing but we have to admit that entertainment plays a part in the condition of the so called “black” community.

I feel like people blame rap music, but forget about the socioeconomic issues that put our people in desperate positions. Every dude banging in his hood ain’t listening to rap music, and he probably ain’t banging because of it, but because of lack of resources, or lack of education, but rap ain’t really it. Rap is a mirror image of what we see in our neighborhoods, but it’s not the cause.
