Lyrics in English:
I was walking along the road when I reached a river of blossom. I couldn't pass it. /
I took a handful of blooms, then I could pass it /
I was walking along the road when I reached a river of gold. I couldn't pass it /
I took a handful of gold, then I could pass it /
I was going along the road when I reached the Sun's manor. I couldn't cross it /
I took Sun's daughter herself, then I could cross it //
I was walking along the road, I reached the homestead of brothers, I could not get in /
The first brother opened the gates, I gave him the handful of bloom /
The middle brother opened the door, I gave him the handful of gold /
The youngest brother raised a chair, I have him Sun's daughter to be his bride for life //

My great-grandfather jumped ship from Latvia to settle in Australia. When I hear this kind of song, I have a kind of inexplicable homesickness and longing.

take care Brothers and Sisters Happy Easter!!!
Thanks for the links! Happy Easter too you as well.Be safe not sure of your location but going by your picture i assume America as well. Hopefully in the countryside like me and not a city .
Perfect! This captures my latvia, my families latvia. Thankyou! Such pure voices
Sublimely existential. I’m entranced by the wandering motioning themed within the narrative of the song’s lyrics. The gentle inter-weaving cadence of the pair of ebbing female voices casts an astral, dreamlike quality that beautifully serves the piece.
Прекрасно!
Šī dziesma iededza manu šīsdienas rītu. Tagad, meklēšu šīs dziesmas izpildītājus.
Tämähän on hieno laulu.
Amazing song..
My family from father`s side comes from Latvia, though they were Baltic-Germans, I feel a kind of bond and nostalgia with the Country. Beautiful place and beautiful language..
+Deo Gloria Some of Baltic Germans had a Baltic blood to :)
+lolikususs Yes I`m pretty sure that my family had Latgalian roots somewhere down the line..
they were occupiers
@@bivouac1858 Yes but i'm Latvian with Baltic-German blood. and Russian too. But mostly Latvian
@@bivouac1858 I used to believe that, but learned Baltic history is nuanced. You might be interested to knnow -
, techinically no for all areas of Latvia. For instance King of Jersika converted from Orthodox (long established in Latgalia) to the Crusader's version (Catholic) and rules as a vassal, ruling his area. His daughter married the Baltic German family
Also note that in Couralnd Latvians maintained a royal line recognized from the Crusaders times all the way to prior of the formation of the the Republic of Latvia. How does one "occupy" Latvia if some of the Germans were also those who once who helped Latvians to read and write in their own language (Stenders)?

Hi Baltic folk!, I've been trying to find what I think is a latvian folk song, but I cant find it... when I saw a latvian folk dance group dancing this song a girl and two boys dance holding ropes, if u can give any clue I would thank you a lot!
Maybe this one? These are not ropes but the woven belts.
Is not, but now I am addicted to this song... thank you very much!!!!! :D
labi!!!
I couldn't find who the artist of the music is - would you please enlighten me?
found it - it's from 2003 though!

What is the noise I hear in the background? Is it throat (overtone) singing?
William Pagan It is. That song is from this album and in the other tracks it's more evident that the background humming is indeed throat singing: www.upe.lv/english/ltmk16.html That singing technique is not traditionally found in Latvian folk music, only the song's lyrics and melody are. When it comes to folk music I generally prefer traditional renditions over those with some added innovations but in this case I feel that the singers didn't spoil the song with their interpretation but the opposite. I don't know how many hundreds of times I've listened and re-listened to this song, it's one of my all time Latvian favorites :)
That's so interesting! I would have never thought a Latvian group would have that in their music. Also, I appreciate the link!
