Always interesting to hear you impart your knowledge of these records and pressings. I'm still pretty clueless with classical, although once I've upgraded my system, I'll definitely be looking out for some of these great recordings. Cheers Alan.
Thanks Rob. I'm sure you will find some. The quality of sound on some of these records is quite amazing, unlike anything I have heard on rock albums. An upgraded system is something I might have to look into myself...
Congratulations Alan. I could hear the satisfaction in your voice finding such a trove of music. Although classical music is not my cup of ☕ I'm just as excited for you. Greg
Thanks Greg. I have been enjoying learning more about classical the last few years. Hopefully, some of the guys in the UK will get some tips on what to look out for too.
Truly phenomenal finds, Alan! Wow!! Really appreciate you sharing them AND your knowledge about classical records and music. That’s become a large focus of my collecting and listening, so it’s great to see videos like these. It’s been a bit of a disappointment that I haven’t found more good classical records since moving to the greater Milwaukee region. I assumed that great classical records would be everywhere around here, not the case unfortunately. But seeing other’s finds inspires me to keep looking. Never know what will turn up, or when you’ll be in the right place at the right time. Skol! Jeff
Thanks Jeff. These classical videos seem to be quite popular. I think it is an area of collecting the VC is just beginning to dip their toes in. I make these videos to hopefully inspire people to branch out, as classical music can still be found cheaply- for now. That is, unless you're living in Milwaukee by the sounds of it. In the meantime, I suppose you will have to content yourself with your ever growing collection of lovely 78s...
Just happened to see your comment and am thinking you should head over here to Madison - over the years I’ve found great classical vinyl in great shape at a couple of local goodwills and the spring UW Library sale is also a great source. I have found shaded dog living stereos (Heifetz - Sibelius violin concerto a favorite find), several great Argo Neville Marriner records (always pick these up); zubin Mehta and LA Phil planets on DGs plus I always pick up violin records including Heifetz, Rabin, Milstien, Oistrakh, Kogan (found a great recording recently of the Khachaturian concerto on RCA/Victrola). Maybe pickings are good because its a college town. Cheers and enjoyed this video, Alan
@@chrisashley2100 Hi Chris. It sounds like you have found some fine records there. I come across classical records all the time, but very rarely Living Stereo records as these were mainly a US product. I find Argo records often. The Zubin Mehta is a nice find- I have yet to come across it on vinyl. The violinists you listed there are the greats. There are a few very rare Kogan and Oistrakh albums I keep an eye out for, but as yet to no avail. Being a college town probably helps in your quest for classical. There are certain 'posher' areas in the south east of London with fine schools and colleges which always come up trumps. The Royal Borough of Greenwich is just a few miles down the road which has a music college. If you walk through the grounds you can hear small chamber ensembles playing classical repertoire. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Cheers, Alan
I do come across a lot of classical records and although I don't share the same passion or interest as you over it, It's good to learn a little more about it from your videos, nice finds Alan I'm pleased your pleased 👍
Thanks Simon. I appreciate that. I partly do these videos to give a few tips on what to look for. If you can find a few worth a bit, it's a no-brainer to sell them on and buy something you really want.
Wonderful looking classical finds. The Brahms box sets would come home with me in a hurry. Again, appreciate the classical recommendations. Cheers, Richard
Thanks Richard. These videos have proved surprisingly popular. The geeks within us all enjoy seeing something different, I think. Hopefully, the videos are a bit inspirational too.
As I've said to you before, those classical sleeves really are beautiful and the music really is soothing to the soul and the mind. You don't have to be a scholar (I certainly never will be) but you can appreciate it, especially for the prices you get them for. Beautiful artwork of course as well.
Interesting one there, not so into classic music, but it's something I like to learn more about as you see these records piling up at charity shops. Thanks for this lesson, cheers!
I had a similar thought earlier. At the moment, you know my random record system- the classical records are all over the place. But, I had the idea of putting them all together on the shelves popped into my head earlier. What's happening to me? Is this how normal people think?
What great finds! Haven´t had the same luck in a long time,i never buy anything below NM or at worst EX. Thats just how i´m made to go. Love that Brahms box! Drooling a tad when i saw that. Nice video and thanks for sharing, have a beautiful Sunday evening.
Oooooh suit you sir! Thanks for the continued learning curve (or is that curb?) I can at least start to work out what they are worth and which ones I like. £500 I would probably crack and sell it on. There is such a vast array of composers and recordings. Very rare I've seen much Stockhausen so always on the lookout for him.
I have sold a few around the £200 mark over the years- like you I might well crack on a £500 album too. I rarely see Stockhausen myself. I think I have come across his records in charity shops about 3 times.
Great finds Alan👍One thing I'm finding with classical/opera - in my case Callas, is that there are quite a few that aren't even listed on discogs; obviously not as popular as 'pop' music. As you said, the extras which come with the box sets are very nice. Another thing is they're usually well looked after - weren't taken to boozy parties in the 50s/60s and spun on portable players........cheers from Oz. John D
Classical Records are really overlooked in the VC. There are some great albums out there and like you say, even Discogs doesn't have them all listed. Yes, they are usually in very fine condition too. The only things that can suffer with age seems to be early box sets. Quite often the interior can be musty and quite off-putting. In this case, all the sets I found were unusually without any bad smells and remarkably clean.
Hi Alan 👋🏻, really enjoy these videos.....thanks for the info on boxset I really appreciate your insight ✊🏻👏🏻- 😎🎶Lis 🇺🇦✊🏻 My lord!! These are beautiful...just beautiful
Years ago I worked with a woman who's husband had been classical music reviewer for the LA Times. My coworker invited me to her house to see and take all the records I wanted. Her husband had become the wine reviewer. Anyways I left the house with around a hundred albums and they all received 4 and 5 star reviews in the Penguin Guide. The price (absolutely free) was right. My wife thought that coworker had a crush on me. Whether she did or didn't I ended up with a bunch of fine albums.
It strikes me as slightly odd that one should be a record reviewer, move to wine and want rid of all the records. It makes you wonder how much of a music lover he must have been in the first place...
My mobile phone seems to record at low levels, and I have been unable to adjust it, even with a microphone. So, in the meantime, the viewer has to turn their volume up. Sorry about that.
Hi. The easiest way is to put the serial number or code of the record into the discogs website search bar and look in the drop down menu. The matrix number stamped in the run out grooves on the record itself is the most accurate information if there are multiple pressings or releases of the same record. I hope this helps.
@@DavidUKesb They sound fine to me. I have quite a large number of mono rock albums and singles which sound great too. Some records like The Music Machine's Talk Talk, sound monumental.
@@statictraveller Many thanks for the prompt replies. I've passed on some interesting mono records because I thought they'd sound poor on stereo equipment. I know they'd sound better with a mono cartridge and mono switch, but maybe what I've read is from people who are seeking sound improvements even if very minimal or those who may have a large % of mono in their collection.
@@DavidUKesb Yes, ultimately when records were released in stereo, the mono cartridge became a thing of the past because the stereo cartridges were more than able to give a good result when playing mono records. Vertigo Swirls? offer 49p, about 50p more than their musical value. Our local antiquarian has one box of classical vinyls in the shop, but ten meters in basement. They waste only space in the shop from items that sell.
