Just the best such a legend the greatest drummer that ever lived. This just passes once in a life time I am so glad I grew up in a time that I could appreciate this music and had the honor and be blessed to see him in person back in the day these are memories you hold on for ever!!!!!!! Thank you Mr. Buddy Rich LOL!!!!!!
I don't think it can be measured how Buddy's band set the standard for BIG Bands! the unison lines and intriget arrangements were the quintessential high level of big band arrangements. man no one did it like Buddy!
God made Buddy and...the Humming Bird! Outstanding performance! Did anyone hear some of the chords in Lee Musiker's piano solo reminiscent of ELP's, "Just Take A pebble?
Thank you for posting this. Each Buddy performance I look at emphasizes two things: how great he was and what a loss to music and to the world it is to no longer have Buddy with us. By the way, all you drummers out there, Buddy was 65 years old in this performance.
There will never be such a character like Buddy Rich his personality was interesting in as much his comments were always tongue in cheek particularly as his clash with Frank Sinartra in The Tommy Dorsey Band but also although he was the main pin in the band he never overshadowed his bands performance. The one luxury he allowed himself when in England he travelled by luxury car the band went in the coach.Sadly missed.Alf Fell
This is the only concert where Buddy did four solo's. #1. brushes solo 8:15 #2. snare drum roll 33:14 #3. cymbals to snare rim to drum sticks solo 38:24 (best cymbals solo I've ever heard) #4. just drums solo 43:38 (listen to the unbelievable snare drum speed he applies towards the end of this one. just amazing)
It's quite distrurbing that the concert ain't complete,, the final pice of Carioca is missing =/ But still, Buddy was a genius at his instrument!! There are many drummers that has their own sound,, but to get this kind of sound, soul, timing, outstanding performance in solo'ing and dynamic out of a simple set of drums,, there was and will always be only one man who had that ability,, Buddy Rich!
To the best of my knowledge, these are the guys who were not given credit: Trumpets: Dave Stahl, Doug Clark, Chris Pasin, John Harbaugh Trombones: Peter Enblom, Ken Crane, Pete Beltran Saxophones: Steve Marcus, Mike Smith, Andy Fusco, Walt Weiskopf, Keith Bishop Piano: Lee Musiker Bass: Mike Boone I can vouche for Andy Fusco and Dave Stahl, with whom I played in other bands.
Kirk Schmidt Yeah, I was just pulling your leg, mate, don't take me too seriously :) -- I take it that you are a musician yourself, from what you say and from your knowledge of the band personnel here, so all credit to you. -- I have been a fan of the Buddy Rich Big Band for many long years, and I have quite a few of his CD's in my collection. -- Buddy Rich, as a drummer, is often compared to other drummers, and there are undoubtedly some great drummers about [one of my favourites is certainly Tony Williams] -- but I always think that Buddy Rich was the best lead drummer of his era; he started playing at the age of 2, and by about the age of 14 he had already a formidable technique, and I know that there was Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, and many other drummers of that be-bop era of the 40's and 50's, but for my money Buddy Rich stands out as a small band veteran, a Big Band maestro/colossus, and a very skilled and fluent interpreter of the best and most complex of modern Big Band arrangements.
tunefultony johnson I'm guessing you're from England (mate) so check out England's own Pete Cater big band. Pete's a great drummer and does many a tribute to Buddy. Yes, I am a retired musician, playing for fun now with every big band I can meet.
This whole concert is recorded so well i think ive got goose bumps,,and all these guys look like they'er fresh out of Berkley,,which is what Buddy did ,,can some one tell me when Buddy started picking Berkley grads..was it early 80s?
"berkley"??...seriously???..."berkley" is in california, nutsack...the jazz school?...BERKLEE college of music is in BOSTON...note the spelling difference!!
Lee Musiker''s Summertime from Porgy & Bess-- don't think this was on the original issue Very rare Buddy gives his pianists solo without the band Even rarer he has him take 2 bows, claps himself and says "good" Remember Buddy played with both Tatum and Peterson
Greatest drummer that ever lived....To say otherwise is to not know anything about drums! You're welcome.

39:23 the ability to do that with his left hand is one of the things that separated Buddy from the rest of us.
That separates him from all the other drummers that ever existed. Yeah. I'd take it that far.
Glad you noticed that left hand acting like two hands.
Brush Strokes is a quiet masterpiece!!!
Andy Fusco RIP
So sad
I don't think it can be measured how Buddy's band set the standard for BIG Bands! the unison lines and intriget arrangements were the quintessential high level of big band arrangements. man no one did it like Buddy!
The piano player is my buddy, Lee Musiker, who has been Tony Bennett's pianist and musical director for quite a few years.
Excellent!
@S P Barry Kiener did several pieces solo piano during the BR band concerts. He even gets a solo feature on the "plays and plays" album.
No words...Buddy just in incredible form. Band cooking as well.
God made Buddy and...the Humming Bird! Outstanding performance!
Did anyone hear some of the chords in Lee Musiker's piano solo reminiscent of ELP's, "Just Take A pebble?
Great band never to be repeated, Buddy and the boys top of their game great post many thanks
The band was marvelous!!!

That's very cool cause I was there in the front row. My first jazz concert ever and I was just 16 years old.
SENSATIONAL. THE BEST BIG BAND JAZZ.
I stand by what I said.....you simply confirmed it. Bless your heart.

Kirk Schmidt Drummer?
tunefultony johnson I hope you're kidding but just in case - it's Buddy Rich, the leader of the band (see name in title of video above).

+Kirk Schmidt Isn't that Walt Fowler on 2nd Trumpet?
Oh wow! I swear I can hear just about every genre in this somewhere
The piano player was Lee Musiker, from the Musiker family Sammy and Hal. Lee is now the Director at the Kravitz Center in Florida.
thought he was with Tony Bennett?

As far as big bands go,.buddy had his band 20 yrs. 3

Lee Musiker''s Summertime from Porgy & Bess--

Very rare Buddy gives his pianists solo without the band

Whats the name of the first chart...love it
Tracks include : Hookin' it, Brush Strokes, If They Could See me Now, Good News, Carioca, West Side Story Medley Time Check, On Green Dolphin Street.
You forgot Musiker's solo after If You Could See Me Now...
Lee Musiker playing piano solo on "My Man's Gone Now".
lies, you are just being ignorant..... Music is about taste and can not be splitted into bad and good. But i agree this guy does something special.
Steve Marcus!
