    Louis has some good ideas, such as reforms and he was going to tax the 2nd estate [the lords and ladies] but they threw such a fuss, circle back to him being weak willed, that he just let it go. Perhaps if he has stood his ground with economic change and tax reforms things wouldve ended up better for him?

    I hate that they say Marie Antoinette "spent all of France's money" and said of the starving peasants, "let them eat cake". She did NOT say the latter, she said nothing of the sort. The Queen had a number of charities in her name and one Christmas day she even had her own children donate all of their new toys to the local peasant children. Was she a spendthrift? Yes, but that was hardly her fault - that was the atmosphere in which she lived at Versailles, that was the world she lived in and knew no different. All of the nobles spent ridiculous sums, the King himself constantly having to pay his own brother's gambling debts. She was hated before she ever set foot in France because she was an Archduchess of Austria, France's traditional enemy at the time, and the alliance between the two, fostered by Louis XV and Maria Theresa, was one borne only out of necessity, not one of willing partners. Both countries hated each other, and so she was never going to have much of a chance at all. "L'Autrichienne", they would derisively call her behind her back - "The Austrian". She was hated too for not providing an heir, which was not her fault, as Louis XVI apparently had very little idea of what to do - or even the will to do so, at first, having grown up with advisors constantly telling him how evil Austria was. For the first few years of their marriage he viewed her with suspicion, suspecting her to be a spy for her brother the Emperor.
    When she got a little older, being a mother several times over, she massively reined in her spending and stopped hosting wild parties at Versailles. When her husband the King fell into depression over the state of the country and his inability to fix it, she stepped up and tried to get things moving, but it was far too late and she had little success anyway as none of the ministers would take her seriously, as no Queen had ever had a hand in government before and they thought she had no business being there.
    She was so hated that after the King was executed they seperated her from her children, with her little boy being severely abused and forced out of fear of retribution from his jailer to state to the court that she had sexually abused him. She had said nothing through her trial until she heard that, when she asked what mother could do such a thing, and was so convincing that many of the female observers in the gallery, all of them who hated her, shouted for this charge to be removed, which it was. The only one that was, despite all the other charges being of extremely dubious merit.
    She was a young girl thrust into a glittering but dangerous, spendthrift world, and bored at court, she sought any means of entertainment. This is where the parties came from. It's not because she was an idiot who thought nothing of the plight of the peasants - as they at least point out in the video, Versailles was isolated from Paris and she did not get much chance to see what was truly going on.

      @Tamaki742 Před 4 lety +5

      I read that she accidentally stepped on her executioner's feet and apologized for that. I suppose that shows you her true personality.
      Also sadly, despite her efforts, I guess at that point it's just moot. The disconnect really didn't help the people's view of the monarchy at all. In the end, there's no avoiding her being a victim of circumstance.

    The French Revolution was the best thing that happened to France, thanks to that the Jacobins unified France, remember that in France many languages were spoken and each region had autonomy but thank God all that changed after the revolution and now it no longer has separatism such as Spain (Catalonia) or United Kingdom (Scotland).
