She’s the the first Ambassador to have even made that request for the unmasking of one citizen let alone 300 . So before you put her on too high a pedestal , give your head a shake . She violated and conspired to violate the civil liberties of hundreds of fellow Americans all to tip the odds for re election in the Dem’s favour . From my point of view (Australian).
      - The president has to much power, but I like your term limits.
      - The Senate is not representative.
      - Supreme Court picks are increasingly partisan.
      - The 2 party system is too restrictive and both parties need to work together with no corrective mechanism if they don't.
      - Voting is not compulsory and restricting access to the ballot is rewarded.
      - Gerrymandering is rewarded.
      - Corporations are people, I mean, WTF!
      - Campaign contributions seem too much like bribery IMHO. They are out of control.
      - Somehow half your politicians ignore science (Climate change) because.. well I don't know unless it's big dollar donations from the oil and gas guys.
      - Schools are not equally funded.
      - You vote during the working week, you can't tell me this is fair for everyone.
      - Your election cycle is too long.
      - Checks and balances only work if you have a majority in the house and senate.

      @SquareNoggin Před 4 lety +6

I have no love for the Trump circus either, and it's got it's fair share of tyrants and sociopaths..
But that woman is a war criminal. Orchestrated the humanitarian disaster that was the Libyan war, simply to get in the good graces of Hillary Clinton (after having rightly called her a monster and thus being relegated to a staffer position on the council of foreign relations or something like that) and advance her career. And her and her cabal's excuse for *very obviously* leaving Libya exponentially worse than it was under Ghadaffi, totally ruined with open slave markets and constant bloody war... "we didn't have a crystal ball" ... But you did have entire factions in the administration screaming from the hilltops that this intervention would lead to mass chaos and death, and she and Clinton and Obama ignored them and went ahead and did their little war nobody ever talks about anymore because Obama is a peace hero and don't you dare bring up all the awful wars they started! She's eloquent and pretty so of course she didn't cynically war hawk push an illegal war to advance her own career. She' a progressive!
Oh and not to mention being instrumental in the worst humanitarian crisis of our time, genocidal starvation war in Yemen which this woman, Samantha Power, also played a big role in getting off the ground and *who's entire job for a time was to cover up the obvious Saudi war crimes and keep the public and the media in the dark about the pure evil their tax dollars were being directed towards* ... because that's the war party for you. Because in case you don't know, the Saudis don't manufacture their own weapons, they're not the ones making the bombs being dropped on Yemeni children and they didn't come up with the arms necessary to enforce their blockade that is *right now* starving tens of thousands of children. Media still doesn't really talk about that, and thanks to Powers politicking they *definitely* didn't talk about it when it mattered most, during Obama admin, because they couldn't have themselves be connected to that atrocity, even though *they were an instrumental part of it* . They have to wait a little longer so people forget who started that war and they can blame all on the bad orange man, and folks like Bill Maher and his fans will just gloss over the people who started the war and just blame Trump for continuing it (and he deserves the blame, no doubt, wouldn't shed a tear to see him put on trial for it, and locked in a cell right next to Barry O, Clinton, and Power).
And even now as she's tweeted that the Yemen war was a mistake, she doesn't mention it in her book, doesn't accept responsibility, doesn't justify it, nothing. And it's no surprise, because people have been hung for a lot less than what she and others in the Obama admin did for the Yemen war. She wants a position in the next Democrat administration.
So get past your juvenile partisan Trump derangement syndrome, and stop giving a pass to a blood soaked war criminal like *her* just because she plays for your team. Like fuck the GOP and all that, but it makes me sick the kind of atrocities Democrats can get away with because their base (you) are so hopelessly partisan, blind, and uninformed. This woman should be in prison, but instead she writes self congratulating books and chats with Bill Maher. Our society is sick.

In addition to her brilliant work for the Obama Administration and Pulitzer Prize for A Problem from Hell she is an exceptionally graceful and righteous woman. We need more moral beacons of light to counteract the darkness that has encompassed large parts of the West over the past 5 years. I look forward to seeing what Ambassador Power will do at USAID and am enthused for her!
I have several friends who are all really interested in foreign policy who are also theater and dramatic obsessed. We have a long-time obsession with Samantha Power's personal life story as akin to a major character in high fantasy. You can't expect a lot of good decisions from UN committees where half of them represent dictatorial and repressive nations. This way the formula for gaining more influence in the UN is clear. Implement freedom and human rights in your own country first before making decisions for other countries

She was on Obama's National Security Council and she was the US ambassador to the UN, positions of enormous influence on foreign policy. And in fact, it's well documented that she along with Hillary Clinton influenced a reluctant Obama to enter the Libyan civil war. And she's also on record actively supporting Saudi Arabia's military campaign in Yemen, and the US's effort to topple Assad in Syria, as well as other neocon projects (including the Israeli assault on Gaza in 2014, where thousands of civilians were killed, which human rights groups have decried as nothing short of war crimes).
      _"Read the book"_
Project much? Here's an actual critical review of "the book" from the Intercept that's not a whitewashing fest by a neoliberal/neocon/ Samantha Power apologist: theintercept.com/2019/09/11/a-memoir-from-hell-samantha-power-will-do-anything-for-human-rights-unless-it-hurts-her-career/

Now who's spinning lies. The bombing and destruction of the Libyan military by the US continued well past Benghazi and all the way to the end of the war and the extra-judicial execution of Gaddafi, which totally destroyed the Libyan military, allowing the rebels to waltz into Tripoli, un-resisted, and take over. Even Obama has expressed regret for that decision.

Well, first, it’s not against the Chinese people.
Consider how intently Hong Kong citizens don’t want Chinese government rule over them; the people of Hong Kong, are people who are probably more intimate with the details of China than most people around the world.
People in China are censored from criticizing the government. Chinese people who stand up for values like democracy in China are oppressed by their government.
To most people, one of the metrics of a free society is the ability to openly criticize the government, and politicians in power.
While Hong Kong understands the problem, it seems outside of the area immediately around China, they view that they’ll somehow be treated better by Beijing than than how Beijing treats China’s own people.
They don’t pay attention to the long-term cost. Telecommunication on Chinese-government installed fiber optic signal superhighways, sends all that data back to China, and it will censor criticism by politicians from those countries, who propose shifting away from Beijing’s agenda.
