- In this video I talk about When to go for game. The pool tutorial discusses when is the right time to decide that you want to try and pot all of your balls and the black to win the game. It also looks at why trying to do this too early and failing hands an advantage to your opponent. I discuss that disadvantages of only have a couple of balls left and look at how a player can use snookers and develop problem balls until they are in a position to "Go For Game".

This is so useful. As you say I've become a lot better player, however I'm loosing a lot of games when down to one ball or just black. It's getting pretty demoralising so this video helps a lot and I hope things will change.
Nice discussion of a difficult concept, it's a fine line to thread and can cost the over confident player many racks.
You just pointed all the mistakes I keep making. So often I go for the easy balls leaving the difficult ones till the end only to be snookered. Got to change my tactics.

Another great vid! A lot of players in my league only want to take their easy balls and try to pile the psychological pressure on their opponent by getting 4 or 5 balls “ahead”. Personally it’s never bothered me if they try this tactic as it just leaves more opportunities for me to snooker them or develop a problem ball of mine. Very well explained 👍🏻👍🏻

Another cracking video and well timed as we were talking about this is at our club last night. Park your ego, let your opponent pot themselves into trouble and just hope they don't fluke anything once you start tucking them up! Great to hear what you were saying about losing more games as you start to feel more confident too, my win/lose ratio has got worse over the season as I have started feeling more confident (thanks in part to your vids, in part to practice and in part to Guinness) and I think it's because I have a better understanding of what to do and I am more confident I can do it.....until I don't!!
Cheers. Yeah there’s definitely a correlation between losing more games and clearing most of your balls but not quite making the clearance. Difficult balance to get right. I almost prefer playing the really good players in my league because they either clear up and beat you and you can’t say you did anything wrong if you didn’t have a shot! or they miss their last ball and it’s easier to clear up in return.

Really enjoyed your video, I feel I'm going through that transitional period where I'm calculating routes and when to go for bust! i feel im becoming a better player yet losing more games through it, When i works it's a great feeling to pot everything in one go. Trying to keep the frustration away is something else tho! excellent content
Great video. I'm finding myself losing more games at the moment and was struggling to put my finger on it - you have hit the nail on the head. I'm struggling to find a balance on when to go for it and often find myself stuck in the safety battle for too long and let my opponent develop their way into a winning position.
Thanks. You’re right It is a very fine balance and not something that you always get right. You can’t just refuse everything for ever and get bogged down in a safety battle (although some people like this! 🤷♂️). You have to be brave at some point and go for it and it doesn’t always pan out, that’s pool!
This is exactly the problem I have now since getting better, I'll go for the game and end up out of position on the black or one of my remaining balls then get beat by a less technical or skilled player. It's the difference between being a very good and being very good who is able to finish more times than not.

I now see the error of my ways. Great insight from this. Might be obvious for an expert, but a novice it's harder to see. Been beat a million times after potting a lot of balls early 🤦 lol a little strategy....
Brilliant video. THIS is exactly what 8-ball is all about. I've been beaten by clearing 5 or 6 balls and then being unable to get position on the last one so many times. You can feel like you got "close" to the winning line playing this way too (when in reality you were nowhere near it) which had a psychological impact on the next frame or two. I'm still to learning to recognise when it's likely I'll be able to pot a ball AND get position, and if it's low probability, pick a spot on the table to put the cueball that's horrible for your opponent instead.

Here is my take on this subject: There is a very fine line between going for it or not and that fine line is determined by 2 things.
Number 1.) The rule set that you are playing
Number 2.) Your ability
Yep always a very fine line. Table layout is also a determining factor but that almost works on a sliding scale with ability.
Been playing on and off for years, and I still lose games against worse players by going for game too much when it's not really there.
I love clearing up and everyone around me saying you're too good, what a fkn clearance. However this happens one time out of 10 possible clearances. Which isn't that good.
Just because you are winning.. doesnt mean you are winning.

The hardest thing to do is knowing when to "miss a shot".
If you can't pot them all, don't pot at all
