  • We fire up X-Dyno to get some hard numbers on the Reedy VR-ST .21 nitro mill. Former factory Yamaha Supercross mechanic Brian Kinney is at the controls hacking out a perfect tune and maximizing output. BK has also designed nitro engines for the RC hobby and really knows his stuff. Check out the full Reedy 121 engine review with dyno charts and graphs in VRC_004.

    I own an X-Dyno. Brian is a very knowledgeable and stand up guy and really did his homework when he designed the X-dyno. It wasn't a cheap investment to my business here at AB Mods but it was a very good investment!

    I borrowed a inertia dyno over a decade back using the "performance trendz" software and data collection hardware, (direct drive with clutch and disconnect coupling, steel flywheel reving to 21,000 rpm) and was going to build myself one for the gas Zenoah engines (I build those for a living), but I bought/put together a water brake type instead.
    If all the operating factors are controlled pretty well, the inertia dyno should be pretty accurate. Other than some bearing resistance, and all you have to do is calculate the flywheel "inertia" correctly when you build it.
    I am a past motocross guy myself, and I can say with very high confidence, that you will not work on the pro's bikes for a factory, if you are not a sharp guy. If I had to bet money on weather this dyno is accurate or not with in "+ or - 3%", I would put the money down on "it is". If I see comments that the engine should make more power, that could be because other dyno operators claim inflated values (by mistake or on purpose), which would come to nothing more than "wishful thinking for sale".
    Now I believe it is possible to get 2 different dyno's to read the same (with a bit of natural engine variation of a very small percentage of power). A mile is a mile. A gram is a gram. And a Horse power is a Horse power (which would actually be a different amount of power, if James Watt had used a different horse for his calculations.). The difference is "calibration".
    Nobody has a good way to calibrate a dyno. If, for example, I had a "certified" electric motor that made exactly, say 2hp @ 10,000 rpm from a reliable electric power source, I could get a very accurate calibration.
    Then we can all use that calibration set up to calibrate our dyno's, and if all the running factors are controlled for each dyno, they should be very close to each other.
    I calibrated my dyno with a gas engine, and the manufactures HP claim of that engine. No, it is not the best way to calibrate it, because I am relying on the manufactures claims, but I should be as accurate as they are, and probably with in about "+ or - .2hp" from actual.
    Here is my dyno running, and it is not calibrated. If I change the software input number for the "efficiency loss factor" (the resistance of the dyno drive train), I can make it read anything I want. I have some competition who has inflated claims, (weather by mistake or on purpose) so I did this vid as a joke about it. The rpm numbers are correct, but the hp and torque are almost 3 times what the engine actually produces for power.
    For some reason, I can't copy and paste the vid link on here.
    Type in "earthsurferUSA" on youtube, and it should be first on the page. You can see some of the red and black dyno console on it.
    As for the lower compression I mentioned for the marine application, I raised it back up. Hot and muggy days (like in Southern Florida) effected the power too much with the lower compression.

      +EarthSurferUSA The dyno you borrowed as the dyno we developed with Brian Kinney. They were all setup to be as close as possible to each other and has coast down procedures to remove drag from the system.
      The manufacturers never had a dyno and 99% of all their numbers were fake calculated values.

      I have wondered if Zenoah actually had their own dyno. But with the inertia dyno I used, (which was also built by a sharp guy--so I am sure he got the flywheel inertia calculations right, and a piece of cake compared to the rest of the engine he designed,--which never made it to market), matched the results of Zenoah's claims in the owners manual,-- 2.8hp @ 12,500 rpm with no exhaust and no air filter.
      I got 2.78hp at 12,500 rpm. If Zenoah did not have a well built dyno, they had a pretty good way of determining the power output.

    I would like to see more side by side comparisons on current popular .21 and .28 engines that cost 3 to 4x's as much as a stock .21 engine and also tuning the stockers for more power and reliability.

    • @zesprixx
      @zesprixx Před 6 lety

      Depends on the engine, if you want a quality engine then you should probably look at a .21 since they are the only size used in racing where quality and power is what you need

    2 things to remember about dyno's. no 2 will read the same and the numbers doesn't really mean squat. I could make the dyno show my engine has 8hp if I wanted to.
    they're not really reliable for proving your hp numbers as they are for testing your mods and tuning the engine.

    I haven't been in the nitro scene for about a year. Is this the step up from the 121 VR I assume? Still a 3 port? Also, I see a lot of manufacturers claiming 2.5-3 hp on their motors. Are they testing differently or is this thing way behind. I kinda doubt the latter is true.

    Hey love the video I was thinking of doing a swap since I have this engine but wanted to see how much power it made and this video helped a lot I just noticed you guys are running a clutch bell and spur gear is that what is reading the dyno numbers? And could you just run it off the output shaft of the motor? I'm not too familiar with rc dynos.

    • @vrcmag
      @vrcmag  Před 7 lety

      You can't run off the shaft, nothing grabs it. There is no clutch, it's locked. The dyno software does the computing. A dyno is a simple machine. The gearing was selected for the length of run, and to not have the weigh spinning at such a high RPM.

      +Jimmy Alfonso yes, I'm not sure if you're know who RB inovations are but they sell superchargers for the baja and 5ive and all they are is a extended air filter that actually can put unecessary strain on your engine. they have a video of them doing a dyno test and with and without their "supercharger " and the readings don't match the sound of the engine's RPM'S. The most power enhancing upgrade you can do with a 2 stroke is a half decent tuned pipe.
