longswords are actually more nimble due to the balancing they have over the katana, the katana is more blade heavy for better cutting, while the longsword is balanced to cut and thrust.
They probably get a very poor replica. They tell us nothing about the sword... shapness, type of steel, weight, point of balance...
That's what I was thinking
But didn't they say they tested a greatsword?
@@VanillaYT. they don’t know the difference between longsword and greatsword. The sword in question is a longsword

So multiple problems with the video,
1. It's clear that the Katana they're using is a replica from their own store, which wouldn't be a problem if it was an actual forged Katana and not something that was slapped together in a factory, the blade on the Katana you can tell when you watch frame by frame that it kind of drags the mat a small bit with it before actually cutting meaning the blade isn't sharpened and doesn't have a good edge.
2. Why have only one person who only has practice with a Katana test both weapons? They're both completely unique swords and have entirely different stances, styles, and swings that you absolutely need a seperate person that actually knows how to swing a greatsword.
3. If the point of the video was to try to sell me your product, then why end the comparison with a simple "well they're both different swords so we can't really compare them," ending? Wouldn't it have made more sense to make some sort of attempt to give the edge to the Katana, or at the very least say if you liked the Katana the guy used you can find it on our store? Idk it just feels like this store is run by kids or something
I agree with the part about the edges. The longsword didn't even seem sharp.
The stances however are far more alike than apart, however! Despite being completely separated, there's almost a 1:1 version of any katana stance that european stances also use. Foot angle differs a little, but they are close enough to be hard to recognize.
Still, even with the slightly sharper katana, those cuts felt mediocre and the longsword didn't even cut at all.
@@spicketspaghet7773 yeah how can you have someone who doesnt know anything about a longsword try to determin its proficiency when they can even get a good cut in
hes only using a 1045 Carbon Steel pretty crappy
Yea that’s true but 1060 and 1090 carbon steels are a lot more expensive
Several problems in this video. They probably get a very poor replica. They tell us nothing about the sword... shapness, type of steel, weight, point of balance, the maker... It looks that everything is wrong with this sword.
And its a Longsword, not a greatsword.
Longsword and Katana are in the same range of weight, 1 to 1.4 or 1.5kg
The point of balance in longsword are closer to the hilt, which makes more nimble and feel lighter. (The katana is shorter and have a thicker blade)
See Skallagrim and others cutting with the longsword here on CZcams. Longsword can Cut as good as a katana.
The longsword does not loses for katana in anything and its a more versatile weapon.
Also, cutting with longsword is More technical due to the straight and more flexible blade. You need to get a very good edge alignment. The Katana has a "autocorrect" effect that helps with the cut. (Search for Shadiversity video talking about the Katana to see "autocorrect" stuff)
Noice. Also, Ratio. ⚔⚔⚔⚔
Yeah this guy has a bias for katanas
This.
@@wujek7616 + ratio.
The longsword is not perfect either, and anyone is retarded if they think it is and just as dumb and ignorant as anyone else
1. because of its length and P.O.B it was a far greater disadvantage in terms of CQC and speed.
2. Because of the type of steel as well as design, it’s not as good in terms of its control for cutting, it cuts because it’s a blade but not what it’s designed to do.
They both have their intended designs and they they excel in what they were designed to do…..
The longsword is a cut and thrust weapon while a katana is more focused on the cut also curved swords are easier to do cuts with because of their blades doing draw cut motion, straight blades on the other hand require you to do the draw cut motion manually to get an effective cut not doing will result in a chop instead of slicing motion and when it comes to weight both a standard katana and longsword weigh very similarly at around 2-3 lbs, it also varies depending on size and where the point of balance is on the sword and the quality of the sword matters if doing a comparison.
Thank u
The curvature does not have anything to do with how well the katana cuts. The reason the katana cuts so well is completely because of the way it's hardened and because of its weight distribution.
@@ClaimerofLoot6942 Curved blades do affect how well a sword cuts as swords with a curve have a longer cutting surface than straight blades making them better cutters than straighter blades , katanas were designed to have more emphasis on the cutting capacity, while longswords were designed with both cut and thrust hence the blade being straight for accuracy both these sword were made for different reasons, while i do agree that the hardness of the edge and the point of balance of the sword are factors you forget to mention the blade shape and edge geometry, how hard the blade is and how heavy it is are not the only reasons why a sword cuts very well.
@@jofelchristianbasilio3982 I was wrong earlier about how curved swords don't cut better than straight swords. However, the Katana's curve is too subtle. It will barely make a difference compared to a straight sword.
@@ClaimerofLoot6942 While it is true that most katanas have a subtle curve they actually help in edge alignment which allows you to line up your cuts better hence the katana is more forgiving in the cut, also the curve creates a slicing motion when cutting a target allowing for less effort in the cut, if the sword was straight you yourself would have to do the slicing movement, not doing so will cause chopping motions instead of a draw cut.
That was no greatsword, that was a normal longsword.
thats a longsword sir, far different than a great sword

Everything that was said about the longsword and European/knightly warfare in this video was wrong. Which is an achievement in itself.
3:10 People still believe this?
Most of the video sucks, tons of miss-information, cheap poorly made weapons, so yeah, they would.
That European sword you're using is NOT a greatsword by any metric really. It's more of a two handed longsword. (Which is okay, cus that's the better comparison anyway). A greatsword would be something like the zweihander. You also said the sword was the "Main weapon of the knight." Which is for the most part, false. Like you stated with samurai, European knights and soldiers pretty much used spears and bow and arrow for formation fighting. With the british warbow in particular being so notorious for being able to completely punch through plate mail armor. It was the equivalent of getting hit with a cannonball pretty much.
From the tests your performed, I have reason to believe the longsword you used may have been at least slightly blunt. Despite the fact the dude had perfect edge allignment, he was unable to slice through the mat in any sort of clean fashion -- at all. Which ISN'T accurate to european swords as they were, very much so, sharp weapons. You also did not mention the other factors with the two weapons aside from simple cutting efficiency. Such as the advantage of a crossguard over a tsuba guard. Which provides much more protection against attacks towards the user's hands than the small circular guard of the katana. As well as the added advantage of a hilt pommel, providing another grappling range option.
The Number one biggest issue here is how you didn't mention the fact the Katana is a sword leaning more towards cutting, whilst the longsword is more for thrusting and greater protection in battle. Providing the longsword with greater utility against armor, especially combined with half-swording techniques.
In my personal opinion, The Longsword is the greater weapon. But both have their place and uses, strengths and weaknesses. It just pains me that this video made the Longsword look so bad compared to the katana.
wow there's like inaccuracies every 10 seconds in this video.
Greatswords weren't just used in the English Isles via the Irish Gallowglasses or Scottish Highlanders. They found use with the Frisians and German Landsknecht in mainland Europe. They were a primarily anti-cavalry weapon used against horseback riders. The most famous of these greatswords was the Zweihander (literally "two-hander"), with its long sometimes wavy blade and massive parrying lugs. Another variant was the Montante used by the Iberians. Hope this bit of trivia helps.
The long and wavy blade one is called the flamberge. It's a beautiful piece of German engineering.
Contrary to popular belief the heaviest usable would only be about 8 pounds.
Oh dear, you've so many mistakes, big and small, in just a 4-minute video. At least 12. That's an achievement)
In conclusion, we can agree that Irvin is an absolute homie and a very wholesome dude.
He's wielding the sword like an impact weapon
Ancient japanese armor used cloth and leather, like all armor, but it also used metal, like... have you seen japanese armor? in museums and stuff? 'cause those scales and bands and lamels and stuff are absolutely metal.
this was an awful video, not enough research done on both weapons and cultures to do a fair comparison and also it's not a greatsword, it's either a two handed sword or a longsword depending on which literature you read. the longsword and katana are not too far from each other in technique and use, they do have differences but they are both two handed swords which are not used like hammers, they cut and slice and stab, lastly this is not for honor, japan had metal and used it for armor and weapons.

the reason the longsword did not cut through was probably because that tatami looked unsoaked.

Longswords edges weren't used as a blunt weapon, that's a myth. For that they flipped the sword to strike with the pummel and guard.
Also, longswords were sidearms too. For war, spears and pole weapons were preferred.
I expected more of you MiniKatana. Tsk, tsk, tsk...
No knight nor mercenery except fiore dei liberi would be insane enough to use a longsword as a main weapon. Most knights would use spears or pollaxes maybe a halberd if they needed.
Semi-correct. This would be true if they were dismounted knights, but as you know the main weapon of the Knight is the Lance
Ironically they are a little correct when callong the greatsword a Main weapon.
That's about the only sword that would be used as such.
Doesn't chamge the fact that this wasn't one and neither would it ve used like this since the greatsword was an anti formation weapon.
They do know that samurai armor was and still is made from metal as well as leather and silk right??
his edge alignment was off, and so was his technique for both
This comparison is like comparing a 9mm, hollow point handgun to a .50 calibre, armour piercing, incendiary, tracer round sniper rifle made to combat tanks. Yes the glocko is faster, but nothing stops explosion_bass_boost.mp3
That……was a longsword, not a greatsword. Also, it’s specifically stated that Irvin is unfamiliar with longswords and how to use them
Where did you get the medieval great sword/longsword
The reason why he could cut with the greatsword is because of edge alignment. The katana uses a more diagonal alignment while the greatsword needs a horizontal alignment because of the difference in shape of the blade
Also curved blades naturally align themselves with the swing meaning easier to align the cut
No.
No. A longsword can cut any way so long as the edge alignment works out. It's all in how the blade is tilted.

yea the cuts were maybe not the best also because of his facial expression. He seemend to be very tensed while making the cut and that can likely lead to bad cuts.
