- Florence Reece gives a short speech to United Mine Workers rank-and-file and sings her now-famous labor song "Which Side Are You On?", which she penned in 1931. From Barbara Kopple's documentary Harlan County, USA.
My husband worked 40 yrs underground, retired UMWA miner. And now has black lung. He is a PROUD UNION MAN
When granny starts singing I start crying 😭
Yeah, if your eyes are dry by the time she’s done somethings wrong with you
This brought tears to my eyes, such a jewel of a woman she was.
Happy Labor Day ✊
That is always the question!!
Jesus Christ it’s hard to imagine a time when present day RUBY RED Appalachia used to bleed blue.

My Uncle's father fought for Union rights! God love Granny. I'm a man from Bell County Kentucky, right outside of Harlan County. She was right in the 30s the U.S. Army attacked the folks from Kentucky in airplane and Gatlin Guns. That's history, look it up.
I have always gone to a union shop, though not perfect. I felt safe and knew what my rights were., and gladly went on strike when necessary (30 minutes but the customers were all standing up and cheering for us.). My husband worked for Remington Arms years ago. His boss was a Consolidated Coal man and, though I never met him, my husband said he was a liittle scary. All those pompous Conoco people got a surprise, expecting they could afford mansions along the Brandywine when Dupont bought Conoco. They lost their homes in the end.
Could I use this clip for her classic song in an educational film about music in coal labor struggles at Ohio U
You can use 30 seconds for free. You would have to pay royalties if longer.
I used less than :30... thanks!
