I grew up hearing friends and family telling ethnic jokes and whining about (paraphrased) "uppity black folks" in the period 10-15 years after MLK's assassination. Even the more sympathetic people who didn't use the n-word thought he, "went about it the wrong way," and, "didn't like having all that stuff pushed in their faces." This mindset has persisted into Jeremy and Charlie's generation, and this *whole time* they've been chomping at the bit wanting to have an excuse to say it out loud.
