  • I may not be the biggest fan of Xbox, but I'll be darned if they don't make good controllers. But it didn't get that way overnight.
Today, we're looking at the evolution of the Xbox controller, going from its polarizing debut to where it became one of the best controllers ever made (and everything in between). We'll also look at a more modern take on one controller as well as a bunch of different special editions and variations.
(And wouldn't you know it, my 360 S went "Blinking Red Light of Death" before I could use it for the video! I swear I'm jinxed.)
Edit: I don't play Forza Horizon 5 anymore, so this video is the last time you'll see me play it.
The website Consolevariations was a big part of this video, so go check them out to gawk at cool and rare controller and console editions!

i use a bluetooth adapter and rechargeable batteries for my Xbone controller. Maybe cuz i grew up with AA style rechargeables around but i never had issues on pc with it.

Kinda crazy how they outright perfected the desiggn of videogame controllers back in the 360. All controllers today are just an iteration of that

As someone who does play on xbox the small addition of the share button really does make a huge difference

The Duke with updated internals and wireless would be the best option for me. I loved the original Duke and would love a new wireless version of it.

Hot take, xbox controllers are all universally outdated and not that good. DS3/4/5 controllers, the steam controller and the steam deck controls are the objectively superior controllers. Track pads and gyro are the future of controllers and anything less is a regression of progress.

That take's so hot it burned my hands and left a trackpad-shaped imprint
But it's better than the "You Are The Controller" future Microsoft tried and failed to push with Kinect

Since the 360 the controllers have been industry standard. Theyre the easiest to understand (and Nintendo literally copied the controller design for the switch pro controller). It's super ergonomic, by far xbox controllers were the best up until the dualsense in my opinion.

having owned a steam deck and a ps5, I have never once used gyro without being required, and have rarely used track pads

@@GuiltyMelly that is on you. For example, you are someone who played nothing but Nintendo games NES then SNES, you know nothing but the dpad and buttons. Suddenly Nintendo comes out with the N64 and 3D games, it has a joystick now. But you never used a joystick before so why start now, you try playing games with nothing but a dpad and buttons. If it were like modern games, the game would let you despite the fact you'd be intentionally subjecting yourself to an inferior input method for 3D games. You'd be stuck with only 8 directions of motion instead of a full 360 degrees putting you at a severe disadvantage compared to everyone who moved on.
This is exactly what you are doing stubbornly sticking to the inferior dual stick setup. Sure the games let you play without it, but the amount of effort put into making them usable compared to trackpads + gyro is insane. Track pads + gyro play everything that isn't a 2D sidescroller, while joysticks can play 3D platformers perfectly! And suboptimally play everything else at best. Meanwhile trackpads + gyro arguably rival mouse and keyboard if not superseding it.
Edit: I forgot to mention this is just something to think about. I don't mean to come across as if this was law or that you actually intentionally act this way. It's really the fault of the modern game industry and design not innovating where there is clearly a need of innovation. Please feel free to ignore me and continue playing how you want to play, I just want a future where I actually get to play how I want to play like I do on PC/steamdeck.
