The First Life on Earth

  • Life is a defining characteristic of the Earth. It hasn't just emerged on this planet, it thrives in every last corner. Today, there are hundreds of trillions of organisms alive, spanning across millions of species - and that is less than 1% of the total number of living things that have ever called this place home. In this video, we will go back to the beginning, when the Earth was a fiery ball of molten rock, to look at how life emerged on Earth, with the very first cells.

Great video. You obviously study the area you are talking about and I can only encourage you to take it up full time. You have a flair for doing documentary and I hope you continue learning and then passing this knowledge on to every one that will listen. I do bird photography in Australia but I am always in the more arid areas of the desert so keeping my eyes open for the odd fossil. Good luck and long life

This video communicates well the standard view of how life evolved on Earth from simple cells to complex humans. However, there is that little problem of how the most complex molecular machines we have ever discovered could have formed and then come together to form the first "simple" cell. This is not a small issue. There are more molecular machines in your finger tip than have ever been built by humans since they have been designing and building machines. The molecular machines are so amazingly complex that we could never have built them, much less imagined how to build them. I am not even talking about cells, but about the proteins and enzymes that operate on so intricate a scale as to enable life to exist. We still seem to be living with 19th ideas about protoplasm and how that just forms cells. It just doesn't work that way. Until we come up with a reasonable theory to account for the emergence of life all that follows is just a house of cards. People seem to think that given enough time it will all work itself out. They just do not realize that for life to form, time is the enemy. The longer the time period, the less likely the building materials, a.k.a. molecular machines, will remain in working order for the components to come together to form a cell. It's a mess and the mess is only getting worse the more we look into it.
