    In my opinion we should have no international games during the League season, players go on international duty in September, October, November and March for 2 weeks at a time. That adds up to 2 months, if we played the League season all the way through we could finish a month or two earlier. Rather than may/june , the season would finsh in April and all world cup qualifiers could be fitted into the month of may. There for players would gon on holiday in June and start the new league season in August.

    • @msingh999

      Sounds the most logical way to schedule the calender. Only issue is if players are injured during the international period they miss all international games qualifiers and tournaments which would be devastating for them personally. But it should be tailored more towards club leagues and football ad they pay all wages etc even during injuries

      Didn't Arsene say part of the reason for every 2 years is to reduce the mid season breaks? So benefit for men's football would be slightly less interruptions mid season, and guaranteed 25 day break after tournaments, benefit to women's game is increased exposure which should then force growth at club level.

    Really interesting discussion with 2 really knowledgable legends of the game. For me it raised 2 questions. The first is that their talk was about having the World Cup every 2 years but what happens to the European Championships and the Nations League tournaments. If they had them every 2 years will this create too many games and because it is Europe based no monies would filter to the developing countries and there are some of them in Europe like San Marino, Luxembourg and the likes of Albania. The second question is about the financial benefits to the developing countries when most of the money will go to the likes of France, Germany and Italy because they are likely to go further in the competitions. To me it looks like the rich are going to get richer and the smaller countries that have not much to start with will be feeding on scraps. This surely will lead to losing a lot of players from the game because they simply have no incentive to carry on and be noticed by bigger and better league clubs.

    Small football countries can play a World Cup/Euro qualifiers each year and they still won't qualify for a tournament. The big football nations are miles ahead and closing the gap isn't as easy as in club football where you have investors or you can simply buy players. In my opinion it won't make any difference for the countries itself, maybe just for the individual player who has a better chance to be noticed by more scouts.

Then add the African and South American tournaments and the travel and time away from their clubs. It's just insane. The idea of changing the calendar to play international games at once and club games without breaks makes sense. I think everyone would be okay with that. My issue is increasing the number of tournaments. It works for the women's football and should definitely be implemented there but in men's football it's not necessary. 3 tournaments (Euro, World Cup, Nations League) in a space of 4 years is okay

  • @jagonchichon590
    @jagonchichon590 Před 2 lety

    Maybe I missed this but aren't these changes for the very elite. What would happen during those longer international breaks to players who don't go on international duty and/or play in the lower leagues? Would the lower leagues continue?

  • @dettwork
    @dettwork Před 2 lety +1

    I don't know if I missed it but what would happen to the Euros? I don't see how you can have WC each 2 years and still have the individual continental competitions?

      This is why the UEFA is against this concept. FIFA is basically doing this to cut into the UEFA profits as the UEFA earns around double of what the FIFA earns over 4 years (due to Champions League)

    love the chat.. love the insights. However, for the world cup being every 2 years for Women's makes sense in terms of the points covered but for men's its just pointless other than just squeezing more money out of the game.

    Womens football has to remember that it wouldn't exist without the financial help it gets from the mens game. Man Utd didn't even have a womens team until a couple of years ago. It still has a long way to go, but cannot expect parity. It just doesn't have the same level of exposure or interest, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for it to grow even further, there are plenty of markets for it to expand into.

    A WC every two years increases the quality of club football. Players will put more in their game at all times in an attempt to be picked for the WC national squad. One might say that's already the case with players fighting to be picked for the continental tournaments, but the WC is different gravy.
