  • TNF Rolling Thunder 22, updated for 2018! I take a look at the bag and the updates on the new version. Big thanks to my daughter for helping me with my intro! Thanks for watching!
    *REI.com seems to regularly offer this bag for approximately $133 or less. As one of my favorite bags, I highly recommend checking the bag out!

    I have the 30 inch North Face Rolling Thunder in the color Taupe Green/Tropical Camo. I got it on sale at REI. This luggage is huge and I received tons of compliments on the army green color. I just got back from Hawaii and I was able to pack all my clothes and souvenirs and it’s not even full to the max. I posted a pic of it on Instagram.
    I put red luggage handle wraps to cover the grab handles and also use bungee cords with hooks as compression straps. I just bought the matching 22 inch carryon and the price drop really low in REI. I had to get it right away. I’d be happy if North Face makes a medium size 26 inch Rolling Thunder luggage.

    I have the previous version and really liked it, but the handle mechanism broke while I was traveling in Ukraine. I guess it was all the vibrations from being used on cobble stone streets. I had it repaired on the side of the road in India a few months later. While the gentleman did an excellent job with finding parts from other bags for the repair, I did miss the telescoping feature. There was no way to lock it in place so I had to drag it everywhere - no pushing. That said, the body of the bag has held up great and I’d probably still be using it if it weren’t for Covid-19, but now I’m back in the US and looking to upgrade my setup before heading out again (hopefully soon).

    If you had a choice would you go with this updated version or would you choose the previous version?

    Does the new handle lock in the middle stage, or just like the first one, only locks when fully extended?

    I really wish they had toned down the branding. This is very obnoxious! I notice the grey and black are a bit more muted--perhaps will look those.. Looks like it holds a whole lot though. Also I think square works better than "tear drop" like the Osprey Ozone. Looking for light weight option. I think it's domestic carry-on only, but not a big deal for me, I think. Excellent review as usual, also like your young announcer--seems to have promise. :)

      Thank you Jay!!! I really like TNF products I've had a chance to check out. All have been great quality and functional. The branding is a little loud on this color : ) Overall I highly recommend checking the Rolling Thunder out if you're in the market. I've seen the bag marked down at REI in the past so even better if you can find the bag discounted.

    Does anybody know what the little “bottle opener” thing is? Why is it on a clip deal? Is it to strap stuff down to the inside little strap?

    I have the previous version of the rolling thunder 22 and I love it. Just bought my lady this new version, exactly like the one in your video and it feels like it gotten smaller. Maybe because of the new shell?

      @ChrisU  Před 5 lety

      Hi Ro Vidzz! I was super excited when I found out the bag had been updated because, like you, I love the previous version. You may be right about the size but I'm guessing most would not notice unless, like us, they have had both versions. The only thing I can figure is that maybe TNF was concerned about making the bag a little lighter. Just a guess! Still awesome bags! Thanks for comment. Take care!

    Would this be good for check ins also? I usually just do carry on, but sometimes I just don’t wanna worry about a bag and check it in.

      Hi Damian! Yes, I feel you would have no problem if you needed to check this bag. It should be able to handle about anything thrown at it : ) Take care!

    Great video. Much appreciated. I personally switch between the duffel version of the base camp and the Osprey Transporter 40 but I was thinking about getting this for my girlfriend. Are the measurements of 14" X 22" X 8.5" accurate? I want this to be a carry on for her so I'd like to avoid any issues of being forced to check this is if possible. Bag looks great but my only concern is this doesn't have as much of the ability to be able to pack this down like a duffel.
    Do you find it to be a good carry on? Assuming you use it that way. Or should I go a size down?

    • @ChrisU
      @ChrisU  Před 5 lety

      Hi Dan! Thank you! I feel this is an excellent choice for carry-on, specifically for US domestic flights. For international travel, you may consider sizing down. I no longer have this bag, but from my time with it, I feel the measurement are accurate. But, like many bags that use similar material, if you over pack the bag, I could see it possibly exceeding the listed measurement. I really would not be too concerned though. This is one of my favorite bags I've looked at and the only reason I don't still have it is because I use the Away Carry On if I use a rolling bag, plus the fact I've accumulated quite a few other bags : ) If you like the North Face base camp duffels, I think you'll really like this bag. One last thing, if you have a chance to shop REI, or rei.com, I've seen this bag listed at around $133 which is an excellent price. Not sure what it's currently listed at though. Hope this helps. Take care!

    I just bought 2 of the previous versions bags from OfferUp locally for $75 each. Excellent condition. The biggest complaint i keep seeing is that people who have the previous version like the one I have with the red aluminum handle say it's better quality. Reviewers are saying this new version handle feels cheap and the bag overall quality is not the same. The handle on my 2 feel great. Best i have ever felt on this tomorrow of bag. I serious think i got a great deal at 2 for $150 total.
    Thanks for reviewing

      @ChrisU  Před 5 lety

      Hey ExposedRoot! Wow, that sounds like an awesome deal! Love these bags! I do prefer the version you have over this bag. I also agree about the handle This one is better than most bags, but the previous version may be the best I've tried. If it only had internal compression straps...

    • @ExposedRoot
      @ExposedRoot Před 5 lety

      I almost feel like mole you can use the molle hooks on the inside of the bag on the side for your own straps. I found lots on amazon. I just looked up ‘compression straps’ and found many and they are cheap. As you can see there are many molle loops inside on both sides where compression straps would be. It’s almost like that’s what they are there for. My own hack idea. Feel free to mention that option if you do another similar vid. Also try ‘accessory’ straps.

      Honestly the older red handle seems better quality but it really isn’t. Had mine break twice. Have not had any problems with the newer version. Not only that the wheels are superior over the older version.

    You mentioned that you consider the handle a downgrade, but can you explain why? How is it different from the previous version?

    • @ChrisU
      @ChrisU  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey andrew! Great question. First, this is only in comparison to the previous bag. The new bag's handle is superior to most bags I've had a chance to look at, so I don't mean to downplay how nice the handle is. Second, take my answer knowing I unfortunately don't currently own either bag.
      One of the standout features of the previous bag was the handle. It was very sturdy, little flex, with a premium feel. The new bag keeps the sturdy feel but seems to lose the premium feel when compared with the previous bag, using more "plastic" components. Also the previous version's actual handle was circular and the new bag is angled. After raising the MSRP, I guess I expected the same handle or some type of upgrade. There were also a few other areas I was slightly disappointed in but, if you're in the market for an excellent all around bag, I highly suggest taking a look at this bag. The Rolling Thunder is one of my favorite wheeled bags on the market. On a side note, I've seen this bag nicely discounted in the past so makes it an even better deal. Take care!
