I would like to see you do this exercise again on good paper. I understand why you used the cheap paper as a learning exercise. I think it could be a good learning tool to show how much better flow and lifting you get on cotton paper, side by side, maybe 2 paintings at once! I bet the surface of the Gencraft looks pretty rough after really using a lot of water.
That said, I really like your painting. Your rapport with Kolbie was so fun. You work well together.

I actually did it again on the good paper but didn’t film it. I love the idea of filming each and showing them side by side. That would be brilliant!!
The surface held up but the staining is what killed it for me. I couldn’t do the lifting/blotting well because of the staining.

Wow!! I am so thrilled with how your painting came out Kristy! It was also great to see how you felt & worked through this process of painting a landscape that you were uncomfortable about. Knowing that you sometimes feel exactly nervous about how the process is going to be or come about makes me feel better that it’s quite okay for me to feel the way I do with my painting challenges. This was a very interesting, insightful, & inspiring video of both my favorite artists of two very different styles coming together to share a wonderful painting journey together. If someone could please tell me WHY Neptune is so glorified by so many?
I know I’ve said this before; I started back painting when my incredible late son and his friends talked me into trying Chinese calligraphy to help me learn characters. My Son spent over 12 years traveling through and working in China..I will NOT get political because my Sons legacy was he just wanted people to get along, and get out of their bubbles and learn about other’s cultures. He’d not only traveled through China; he backpacked through Europe, installed solar power in Nepal and some African countries; taught soccer on Pacific Islands and helped my Uncle in an indigenous village in the Andes, connecting them to a satellite.
I would be happy to tell you the story of Chinese Brushes and TRADITIONAL, long time brush makers, have always prided themselves on the ancient reciprocity between farmers and ranchers and brush makers. My son actually visited one of these companies when I expressed my horror that all REAL Chinese/Sumi-e brushes are animal hair. I believe there are some videos by Henry Li with a brush maker..I wish CJ had filmed his visit..but, unfortunately, he just wasn’t interested in doing videos. I’ll just say that a goat and sheep farmer who were at the brushmakers, were excited to tell my son how their young goats and sheep were VERY happy with their late spring shaving as temperatures skyrocket. In fact one of my sons friends ended up doing a viral cartoon about the process..everytime I use my white goat/sheep brushes, I picture that cartoon of the critters all dancing in elation as painters sit nearby making paintings..with large fans blowing on them. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂
I wanted to add..there ARE unscrupulous companies everywhere, including China. HOWEVER, Brushmaking is considered a protected cultural tradition..and you may not agree with it, but let’s just say you wouldn’t want to be a new brushmaking factory harming critters in China these days. I hear Chinese prisons are even worse than our worst..and yes, it IS a crime. Even some new companies making “synthetic” brushes have either moved to another Asian country, or just shut down rather than deal with both the wrath of the Govt and Chinese artists. A few friends started selling some synthetics made in Vietnam and either stopped, or will be soon because of the backlash.
Maybe it’s just because I’m used to my Chinese brushes, but the Neptune daggers I tried..I couldn’t keep a point, I basically couldn’t do anything with them. Even my #6 Neptune Round-it constantly shed hairs and also would NOT keep a point. In fact, I’m having a hard time with most of the Western brushes, giving my VERY happy best friend the brushes I don’t like. She told me I just need to practice with them more…but after giving them over a month, I just lose my patience. They are either far too stiff or, like the Neptune, just do NOT keep their shapes or a point.
I’m basically just resigning myself to having 2 sets of Chinese brushes..ones I use with western paints and will likely have to be replaced, (western paints, especially pan paints, AND the highly staining paints, aren’t kind to these brushes..and because they are “glued” into the bamboo or hardwood handles, mine, at least, are glued in with peach sap, they must be cleaned gently. That’s usually what is used on new brushes, ALL of the bristles, and needs to be carefully washed out before use!); and my really good brushes I use only with Chinese ink and paints, I also have separate brushes for Calligraphy and ink paintings. The first time my best friend came over and saw all my brushes on brush racks..well, first she remarked I had enough to teach a class and must have spent a fortune..no. Second she remarked I must be an expert with all my ink-stained brushed. I’m not, not even close. But I DID give her about 8 brushes. I was blessed with my son and his generous friends flooding me with supplies for the past 6 years. I also inherited some very old brushes that I don’t use, from my first tutor, a Chinese great-grandmother of a friend of my sons. Lili had spent almost 30 years teaching at Stanford before returning to China for retirement. I now regret I didn’t spend more time with her painting..although her history, culture and language lessons, from someone who had lived both in China and the US for over 90 years; invaluable! In fact, in return for her generosity, I help her granddaughter, who teaches in Chengdu, and in a few hours will begin teaching yet another class of college freshmen, about American History and civics.
I “teach” online through the “kitchen sink” app WeChat and have several hundred young people I still keep in touch with. My son went to that class with his friend Liang just before he returned to the US..and was treated like a celebrity..not because of what he’d done, but because he was Ayi-El’s son (me 😂, Auntie El). They also knew I was a student of Liang’s grandmother.
When my Son passed last year; you couldn’t imagine the outpouring of Love I got from people around the world; but especially China. That’s when I also decided to get more serious about painting. My best friend is a former art teacher who spent 2 years in Harbin, China when her husband worked there. (He’s Russian…a Priest, actually. Yea, we’re quite a bunch) Liz suggested we try fusing the art forms (just don’t tell the Chinese Govt 😂)..and that’s what we are TRYING to do. I VERY MUCH regret not taking the art classes I wanted to when I was in school. As Pre-Med, even my electives were science based and I CLEPPed (is that still a thing?) all my humanities and history. I have also spoken at nearby medical schools, on a number of subjects, but one thing I ALWAYS tell the students is to explore the arts..don’t have tunnel vision like I did
I’m currently in a bit of a race..I’m losing my vision due mainly to a genetic disorder. A few weeks ago, I became extremely frustrated, attempting some Xieyi style (loose in Western style, peonies. I told Lix I could only paint Frankenflowers..l was upset. I blamed it on my failing vision. She came over the next day, told me to give her my failed paintings and then shoved a book at me & told me to get my magnifying glass and READ IT! It was a book about the last 20 years of Monet’s life, when he created some of his most famous works. His vision was likely worse than mine. She then took my frankenflowers and turned them into beautiful roses and a “carnation”.
Even at my age, sometimes I need a stern, wise teacher. 😁
Now..before I get ready for class..I think I’ll get my new chips out (Chinese pigment chips), and attempt to fix a chrysanthemum I did a few days ago..who knows, maybe I can turn them into some other flower if I can’t fix them!

Yes that is a good idea... don't worry if you lise the pigment. You can always try it again. Or add more color to it. Even if you put on very dark blue and you use cheap watercolorpaper, you lose the pigment. And when you use pink it will sure stain more. There are ways to get over them. But use lots of water and blue... different shades. And then, don't think of the reference photo or the people that show you how to do it, just take a paper towel and make your clouds. You can do it. If there is a Facebook group I could show it to you. I am not good with the technical things. That's why I don't do videos.

    • @annnoyez
      @annnoyez Před rokem +3

@@KristyRice true. Like your white sun... you didn't cheat. Luke people say it is a sin to use black watercolor. Who said so??? Art is what you are want to make and have fun. If you can make a living out of it hallelujah. If not. Just do it because it gives you something. Like plaisure or happiness. That's the best start of doing art. And if you are comfortable with sketching, you sketch. If you want to use color pencils on your watercolor just do it. Art is the freedom to express yourself.

The more she said you have to lopen en scrabble, the morgen your hand start to be fixed... it was really very funny to watch... but hey if you aren't use to paint a sky it is hard. In the beginning it was killing me. But now I live to paint clouds and water. It's a habit that you can learn. And ofcourse you took a terrible paper. Your paint was really staying on the paper. It's a pity you didn't use arches. Because nomatter the paints you use if the paper isn't good, you are struggling. Krissy I hope you had a wonderful time playing with paint. But if you have arches or another good cotton paper. Never use that paper anymore. I prefer to Pau a bit more to my paper then giving lots of money to expensive paints and use them on cheap watercolorpaper.
Don't get me wrong. I have cheap watercolor paper. I use it as cardbases, and when the grandchildren are coming, or when I want to paint flowers without blending. Using my paint as a gouache almost. What I saw to is that a certain moment you had a very beautiful part in that painting of you and then you ruined it. Left down. That was so beautiful and you started to over work it and with that paper... you should do the same thing again, but with arches or another good watercolorpaper. You will be more happy... but I hope you had a wonderful time. Wich is the most important. And above all, you dared to do it. After all you are a famous floral painter. So you took the risk. Congratulations for that. I admire you for that. You are way up top of all other watercolorartist who wouldn't dare to do what you did... 🧡💋💞
