- Unlocking new Features: Tascam DR-05 Firmware Update & Auto Record
Remember my Tascam DR-05 walkthrough from six years ago? A recent comment on that video had me thinking I missed some major features? Turns out, Tascam has since released several firmware updates with amazing new features, including Auto Record!
In this video, we'll:
Update your DR-05's firmware (it's easier than you think!)
Explore the powerful Auto Record feature - automatically capture audio based on sound levels
Discover Pre-Record - record the 2 seconds before you hit the button, never miss a moment!
See how these features enhance your recording experience
Even if you bought your DR-05 used like me (for way less than $100!), these updates bring new life to your recorder.
Ready to unlock the true potential of your DR-05? Let's do this!

You see two different file names, just because MacOS adds an extra underscore to some file names when copying them to external storage
That's interesting, thanks for letting me know!
@@DcSoundOp It's actually a little more complex than that... Since MacOS is running a heavily modified Unix / Linux under the GUI hood, and the period tells a NIX based os not to display the file under normal circumstances, you will never see these files on a Mac (unless you adjust what the Finder displays). They are used to store metadata about the actual file, hence their otherwise identical name, but tiny size. Since other devices don't necessarily obey NIX file naming conventions, people who only use Macs will often be surprised to find these files floating around when the external storage device is inserted in something else. In rare cases, these files can cause issues with poorly written / tested firmware upgrades - eg a device looking for just a single specific file in the root dir of a USB stick or flash card, but instead finds 2 files, and refuses to update. Try again on a friend's PC after deleting the file with a period, and the firmware update should go fine. This is pretty rare, but worth knowing / keeping in mind.
Big question out of desperation: Can the o.g. 05 (not the 05X) be connected to a streaming camera or directly audio interface into a laptop? I have the DR-05 and cannot afford theh DR-05X just yet. I just updated the firmware, and love the nifty new functions. Thanks for the video on this older model!
Thanks for the question. I think you've already figured it out, but only the newer X model has the audio interface ability. You can use the Line Out and a 3.5mm cable to connect to a camera or laptop to record & that works just fine. These little coiled cables work well for using it with a camera too - amzn.to/4452tyW - that's an affiliate link btw. Thanks again for watching!
