Feb. 26, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- I asked everyone to gather a little closer than usual around my desk for this one.
The voice of Indigo Sparke feels fearless, but at moments it comes at a whisper. I was first taken by this Australian singer on a random journey, listening to around 1300 songs for last year's SXSW music fest. Her song "the day i drove the car around the block" has a mundane title that made me smile, but lyrics that both cut hard and comfort. "Take off all my clothes, kiss me where the bruises are," and later the refrain, "Love is the drug, and you are in my blood now." Indigo told the NPR crowd about the song's origins of trying to learn how to drive on the other side of the road while in Los Angeles, with a huge vehicle and a stick shift. She just gave up and wrote this tale of defeat and solace.
On her third song, a tune that was so new at the time of this performance it had no title (now it's called "Burn"), she's joined on guitar by her partner, Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief. It all made for a most intimate and sincere expression of honest emotion and a beautiful day with friends in the office.

I really don't understand the negativity on this video. Also extremely disappointed to see people saying she should shave her armpits? As if women don't naturally grow hair there? Just enjoy the music.
Amen!
Tbf I would have never looked at her arm pits until you mentioned, as I'm not that observent! But each to their own.
Don't get why armpit hair is an issue, either. I came here for the music, not how she presents herself. I was too busy looking at the beautiful long hair on her head to notice, anyway. I bet those people complaining about her armpit hair would be shocked to know that some men shave their armpits (oh the horror!). Weird gender stereotypes.
don't see any comments regarding either of those points, i guess that's a good thing!
I think you’re the only one who mentioned arm pit hair broski 😂
Adrianne recently released solo material that is at least inspired in part by her break up with Indigo. So I guess they had either already broken up as a couple (and continued to play together, which seems like it could be emotionally painful) or broke up shortly after this… this video is dated March 4th, so the lockdown in the U.S. was just a few weeks away
literally the info i was looking for 😂 thanks!
Cool to see Indigo and Adrianne playing together
She’s amazing! Indigo Sparke’s reveals the repressed feelings we don’t want to consider but need to deal with. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for sharing her with all of us.

This is beautiful. That last song is absolutely breathtaking. And what a nice surprise to see Adrienne Lenker. thanks always tinydesk for the new discoveries
Cried my eyes out during "burn."
Now this!!!! is 4 A.M morning music!!!!
It sure is!
Yo I was here for this!! Amazing performance. Also lost my mind when Adrianne Lenker walked out
Just gonna leave that there and not talk about it huh
A deeeelightful surprise! Thank you Indigo and npr.
I love her, so captivating it makes you feel like you’re floating 😌
I find a sense of comfort in her voice. 😊
Her voice is unbelievable. My god.
Why would she dress like that, it's as if she got out of bed in her grandmother's ripped night gown and thought F**k it that's what I'm wearing today?
such a beautiful performance!!! glad to have found her.
Voice of a real life angel
What a great way to start my day! Thank you NPR / Indigo Sparke.
Thank you!
This hit me in the sweet spot.
Beautiful! 💖💜
She’s amazing
So unbelievably beautiful.
Beautiful. Thank you
Nothing negative from me. I’m here cos of Adrienne n don’t regret a second.
Gorgeous 💛
That last track was beautiful.
We saw her last night opening for Nanna at Portland House Of Music. It was beautiful! Very chill.
Beautiful!
Ahh I love her 😍 the day I drove the car around the block story is me lol
this video made me love colourblind so much more
Beautiful music to laze on a sunday afternoon to!
came for the guitar, stayed for the voice
ella rosenberg do you know what kind of guitar this is?
@@julianwilliams7364 looks like a Collings
😹
Looks like Adrianne Lenker’s Collings
Wow - incredible vocal control.
❤️❤️❤️ thank you so much
Just an suggestion, Indigo there is more there for you to show, it’s a shy performance. Brandi Carlisle has that soft side but some power behind her words. See if you can push through. ❤️
Beautiful Music! ❤❤❤
i’m in awe
Gorgeous Collings guitar.
It's so funny, she started playing and I thought "she reminds me of Adrianne Lenker" for whatever reason....and look who comes to play. 💖🎵🎶
They were a couple when this was filmed. They probably broke up very soon after this. Adrianne wrote a brilliant album about it all.
Two things:
1. 🤔 Her voice sounds very similar to that of Julia Jacklyn's voice.
2. 🥰 Adrianne Lennker
I wish she would have sang Father Forgive Me, it's so beautiful, I'm learning it to possibly record my voice it's for personal use , the song hits me personally her voice is amazing .
Beautiful dynamics, both guitar playing and singing.
She reminds me of a young Joni Mitchell - such an angelic vibe and such a mysterious yet sweet voice
This is gorgeous, really really lovely songs
So many young female singer songwriters have this very frail voice and just sort of mindlessly drone on the guitar. First time hearing Indigo, really love the expressiveness in her voice, soothing but not frail, and woven very well with nice guitar playing and dynamics. Pleasant surprise this Wednesday morning.
If you want a little more guitar action with a similar voice check out Adrienne lenkers music, master guitarist 🤌
Speechless. What is in the water in Australia that makes such amazing Songwriters?
Fosters Lager
There's a little reference in Colourblind to Travis' Humpty Dumpty Love Song : " all of the kingsmen couldn't put it back together". It's a song i love a lot and to hear it referenced like that in another gorgeous song made me really happy today.
Wow! So extremely beautiful. With love from Moscow. 🌹
i love your voice
Great artist
You all NEED to get EARTHGANG on there. Up and coming, unique sound, great performers
Everyone on here like “I can’t believe adrianne lenker is there” BRUH they are dating, at least I think they are
they are! uwu! the description refers to them as "partners" and Adrianne Lenker's Wikipedia page also confirms-ish it! :^)
Yah they are in loveee
@@eminemele1531 were, if I’m not mistaking. Adrianne‘s 'songs' deals with it.
Her voice reminds me of Florence`s. Glad I got to discover her.
Who did I just listened to? Breathtaking
Thank You
Your Beautiful
ahhh seeing my baby Adrianne made this whole video 100000 better
❤️❤️❤️❤️
ahHhHhHh me destruye el corazon :')
🖤
❤❤❤
What a beautiful guitar and also a beautiful weilder of that guitar
This is beautiful. Stop the comparisons. She’s on her own page.
very nice, but that Collings guitar stole the show
Hey Indigo!
this performance is like a cone of savory soft serve
If you found a hair in it
Possibly the last thing i think of
Brava.sembra un angelo caduto dal cielo
You should upload at this time more often.
👏🍻
WE NEED JHENE AIKO ON HERE
Get Mt. joy on here!!!
4 Non Blondes - What's Up?
Muito bonito. Very beautiful !!! Please tell me about you brand acoustic guitar.
Collings i-35
I'd love a solo Adrianne tiny desk
There are two, you can find them by searching
@@nikiarrowsmith yess they're great
Love this, what guitar are you playing?
That’s a Collins I-30
I don't think you really understand this music if you are too full of energy. I watched this before bed and seemed to connect to it. Whereas I tried watching it first thing in the morning and could not connect with it. perhaps my error was watching it after breakfast, with all that sugar in my blood.
please bring sauti sol to npr
CHE PALLE!
cant find the song colourblind anywhere? Is it unreleased?
It’s released now
Julia jackline vibes
Was just gonna say
the comments are so mean omg
What was it
Now we kmow why Max went mad

sevdaliza, fka twigs and aurora please!
Jenny, from Forrest Gump.
:)))
It's not because you are slow and boring that you are deep and tender.
anyone knows her zodiac sign? :P
I think shes a cancer but im not sure
Beautiful voice, beautiful woman, but make me feel little sleepy. I love electric guitars but, in this case, an acoustic will be better, for me, of course.

The last song should be titled "Lord Farquaad"
Fristi!
where is the harry styles video?
First
third
How many times can you strum open Am chord with the same strum? Gets a bit boring. All songs sound the same.
This is not Vulfpeck.
I wish I could downvote this comment more than once
Joni Mitchell on Quaaludes?
Beautiful but not my cup of tea.
Tiny Desk once again brings diversity in Americana music.
Mr Potato Head do you happen to be from the UK?
The way you write reminds me of someone I know there!
And...I agree with your assessment :)
блин, ну и нудятина(
Hilarious on so many levels.
what?
@@adaswedentr I don't understand the question Ada?
You have written that this video of three delicate songs are hilarious. I dont understand what is hilarious about it?
@@adaswedentr Ada I think our conversation no longer serves any purpose.
Name one level this is hilarious
The dressmaker in me is finding it hard to look at that badly creased dress ....... lovely voice ,but if I could just give that fabric a press .
Wish my girlfriend was in a popular band and got me on tiny desk and let me play her 6 thousand dollar Collings guitar
It’s her guitar 😡 Lots of assumptions made here.
And your gf wasn't a bum
This is a drastic step down in quality compared to NPR's usual standard.
Its really not. You must not be very familiar w the series. They do this stuff constantly. She's also quite competent. Its not my style but her writing, singing and playing are all par for the course
And what I want to know, what is with the torn Op Shop nightie? She looks ridiculous.
